The Raccoons: Canada’s Evergreen Anniversary!

Celebrate 40 years of The Raccoons! Relive Evergreen Forest adventures with Bert, Melissa, and Cyril Sneer in this Canadian animation classic. We for a bit of info on what’s happening Canada-wide.

The Racoon's PosterBefore the age of streaming and endless animated options, Canadian viewers were treated to a forest full of heart, humour, and environmental messages in The Raccoons. Created by Kevin Gillis, the series began with four television specials in 1980 before blossoming into a full series that aired from 1985 to 1991. This iconic piece of Canadiana was a trailblazer, since few animated series were made in the country back then. I even tuned in to see what Bert, Ralph, and Melissa were up to—their adventures were wholesome family fun.

Set in the picturesque Evergreen Forest, The Raccoons blended adventure, comedy, and a touch of drama, making it stand out in the landscape of 80s animation.

Mystery Inc. Has Plans To Return In Style in 2026! From Anime-Style Ghosts To A Darker Live-Action Origin Story.

From anime-inspired yokai to a darker live-action origin story, Mystery Inc. and the gang are gearing up for thrilling new adventures that we hope will air in 2026.

Mystery Inc. CompleteScooby-Doo and the Mystery Inc. gang may be taking a brief break before their next adventure. The last series, Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?, wrapped in 2021, and since Velma exists in its own universe, fans—including me—are asking for a proper weekly series to enjoy. Three movies arrived in the past three years: Straight Outta Nowhere: Scooby-Doo! Meets Courage the Cowardly Dog, Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!, and Scooby-Doo! and Krypto, Too! The last one stood out, and I’d love to see more from that pairing.

Looking ahead, fans can expect an anime-inspired series set in Japan and a live-action origin story from Netflix. Details remain limited, but here’s what’s known.

Go-Go Mystery Machine – Scooby Hits Japan

Cartoon Network and Max have green-lit Go-Go Mystery Machine, an anime-styled Scooby-Doo adventure that sends Shaggy and Scooby across the Pacific. They’ll join a new team featuring Etsuko and Toshiro along with another mascot. Together, they’ll face Japanese monsters and yokai, blending folklore with the franchise’s familiar “unmask the villain” formula.

If you haven’t caught the GeGeGe no Kitaro reference, it’s because you haven’t explored this seminal work, which celebrates yokai culture at its fullest. It nods to Kitaro, a series that helped popularize yokai in Japanese media, signalling that this Scooby-Doo adventure draws on rich folklore rather than simply borrowing visual style.

The art direction leans heavily into Japanese influences, and fans online already call it “the Scooby-Doo anime we always wanted.” No premiere date is set, but industry watchers suggest late 2025, depending on production schedules.

Go-Go Mystery Machine

Netflix Live-Action Origins – A Darker Mystery Inc. (most likely in 2026)

Netflix has ordered an eight-episode live-action reimagining of Scooby-Doo’s origins. The story unfolds during the gang’s last summer at Camp Ruby-Spears, where Shaggy and Daphne discover a supernatural murder. This setup subtly echoes The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo, where the focus was on these two characters—a connection that gives fans an Easter-egg-style nod. They’ll either adopt or meet Scoob, and some sources indicate he will appear as a puppy. He’ll be key to a greater mystery that brings Velma and newcomer Freddy into the investigation.

With no casting news and only a few months left in 2025, filming this year seems unlikely. Expect a release in late 2026 or 2027. Showrunners Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg excel at high-concept reboots, while executive producer Greg Berlanti (Riverdale) brings experience with teen drama and moody reinterpretations. With this team, viewers can expect a darker, more character-driven take. Rumours suggest a Stranger Things-style vibe, a fitting direction now that series has wrapped.

A New Era

From Japanese ghosts to Netflix’s summer-camp mystery, Scooby-Doo continues to show his versatility. A 2026 debut looks more realistic than anything this year. Warner Bros. rarely promotes smaller launches, so a surprise direct-to-video release around Halloween isn’t impossible. Regardless, what’s in progress suggests a strong future for this classic hound.

[Essay] Beyond Proportion: Superheroines with Long Legs, The Sexy History

To say superheroines with long legs is not a fetish male artists have when even female producers are okay with this trend.

[Essay] Beyond Proportion: The History of Superheroines with Long Legs Anyone tired of the “long-legged Asian female superhero” fetish can fear not! Not every work is like that, and after watching Kpop Demon Hunters, I had to look back at how overused this style is. There’s just too many Superheroines with long legs and a trip through memory lane is needed to understand why. But it was the late 20th that made this trope even more popular when artists in Europe embraced the style.

In part two, I’ll offer a guide on products not afraid of being different.  But first, we have to understand why this motif continues. The reasons are many, and part of it comes from cultural and industry beliefs. In Japan, some creators may claim that creating a female with long legs is a symbol of grace, femininity, and elegance, there’s evidence that reveals the opposite. (1) In anime and manga, these standards get exaggerated for visual impact. This is especially true for the magical girl genre. (2) While artists can say they have more creative freedom when drawing them in action poses, perhaps they haven’t taken the time to study human anatomy. That includes observing what ballerinas and practitioners of yoga can do!

faye valentineWhile some roles include fighters, assassins, or martial artists (like Faye Valentine in Cowboy Bebop, Motoko Kusanagi in Ghost in the Shell, and to some extent, Sailor Moon), being agile or able to fit into a torpedo tube is often implied. However, these depictions are common in the Shōnen and Seinen industries, which historically target male audiences. In these genres, long-legged female characters often blend fantasy with stimulation rather than outright sexualization.

Artists like Masamune Shirow (Appleseed, Ghost in the Shell) and CLAMP (Cardcaptor Sakura, X/1999) contributed to this exaggerated aesthetic. Extremely stylized limbs characterize the latter’s work. This style was also prominent during the “golden age” when anime and manga gained recognition in the West. The 1960s and 70s were a period of extensive experimentation, and this trope emerged through key works such as Princess Knight (Princess Knight (the full series is available to watch on YouTube), Sally the Witch, Hilda, and especially Cutie Honey.), Sally the Witch, Hilda (not the Netflix series), and especially Cutie Honey.

queen emeraldasAlso, artists like Leiji Matsumoto’s Minmay (Yamato) and Queen Emeraldas feature attractive, long-legged, females. They are representations where elegance and flair typically meant stylization over realism. That’s true with the latter, where the romanticism and visual aesthetic won out. Although the world this author created is elegant, he was not averse to over-sexualizing his character creations. Despite lacking the same level of sexualization as Go Nagai’s heroines, this creator’s female characters inspired generations of manga artisans. Notable examples include Vision of Escaflowne and Cowboy Bebop.

And when this aesthetic has bled into Western pop culture, the most recognizable cheerleader has to be Psylocke. She was attractive before, but transferring her mind to another body heightened her allure, a fact artists readily exploited. Although the storyline explained the change, Chris Claremont, the writer of The Uncanny X-Men, never revealed his motives. (3) Controversy followed, including discussions about its cultural implications and the concept of “yellow face” in comics. The sexualization and overstimulation can become excessive, and writer David Brothers from the ComicsAlliance website effectively argues how that can detract from a story.  (4)

yoko tsunoAcross the Atlantic, products by European artists developed independently. Two notable examples are Valentina—Guido Crepax (Italy, 1965) and Yoko Tsuno—Roger Leloup (Belgium, debut 1970). The reasoning behind how their profiles developed was not for fan service, but to show these are capable heroines.

These efforts are worth seeking because the latter would eventually pave the way for the coming of Euro Manga. This subgenre didn’t earn its legs until Winx Club debuted in 2004 and saw instant popularity. Since then, other productions like W.I.T.C.H and Totally Spies! have emerged. And currently, the acceptance of Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir remains strong. With the latest, Kpop Demon Hunters, this visual aesthetic highlights why this styling is important, but when will this trend conclude? While no explanation exists to say why some female producers are okay with using this trope, the prevailing response lays in the fact they simply know what sells.

Thankfully, there are creative talents who want to subvert it. In part two of this look back, I’ll introduce a guide of easily accessible works for those who prefer variety in their entertainment. Even everyday heroines deserve their due on the big and small screen.

Fantasia Film Festival 2025 More Epic Picks of Must Sees!

When Fantasia Film Festival is the place to be for films old and new set within the genre of speculative fiction, it’ll have a bit of everything for everyone to enjoy, and this list considers them all!

Fantasia Film Festival 2025 Movie PosterWith the complete list of films and shorts fully announced, the 2025 edition of Fantasia Film Festival has a terrific selection of films to get fans of Asian cinema buzzing. That’s because anyone fresh from seeing STRANGE TALES: LAN RUO TEMPLE aka Curious Tales of a Temple (as Light Chaser Animation lists it) can see a revisionist version of “Nie Xiaoqian” with a cinematic presentation of Chinese Ghost Story 3 (Aug 3)

Even though that means racking up tons of air miles points to fly from China to Montreal, it might be easier to rent the film originally made in 1991. But then, one would miss out on seeing The Battle Wizard (July 20th), a fun Shaw Brothers Studio production considered by many a cult work.

With those two works said, the following remaining films make my list of must-see this hot summer season.

Queens of the Dead
Aug 02

Queens of the Dead Movie PoserIt’s Easter in Bushwick, Brooklyn, and a different resurrection is at hand. Dre (LOVE LIES BLEEDING breakout Katy O’Brian) is putting on a warehouse drag show, trying to deal with her lead performer’s last-minute cancellation, among other problems. One that she never could have imagined is a zombie apocalypse breaking out in her neighbourhood, which besieges her and her team while her wife Lizzy (Riki Lindhome, THE WOLF OF SNOW HOLLOW), a nurse at a local hospital, tries to dodge the flesh-eating hordes and get across town to Dre. As the trapped party crew deal with various interpersonal issues—most notably the sudden return of Sam, a.k.a. Samoncé (Jaquel Spivey, MEAN GIRLS), some time after abandoning Dre and her show at a crucial moment—they’re forced to resolve their differences and band together and survive.

  • The Taoist Priest of Laoshan Mountain: A classic zhiguai story about a wandering Taoist encountering supernatural threats.
  • Princess Lotus: A spirit romance centered on a flower fairy—echoing themes of love across realms.
  • Nie Xiaoqian: A melancholic ghost tale where a female specter falls in love with a scholar—the inspiration behind many film/TV adaptations.
  • The Painted Skin: A chilling demon tale where a beautiful woman is revealed to be a monstrous spirit.
  • The Daughter of Magistrate Lu: A supernatural courtroom fable where a magistrate in the afterlife judges the dead.

The main narrative, set at Lanruo Temple, will incorporate each of these works.
