[Vancouver, BC] Finding Inspiration for Karen Lam’s Horror Flick, “Evangeline”

Karen Lam’s romantic horror genre-bending movie, Evangeline is set make its move deeper into the film festival foray in Asia and Australia beginning this Summer. It made its world premiere last year at Stockholm’s Monsters of Film festival in September, and it has seen a limited release in Canada. In Vancouver, British Columbia, it will receive a special screening on May 15th at The Cinematheque (1131 Howe St.) with a Q&A afterwards to discuss how this story was put together from an editorial standpoint.

This movie embraces several ideas that grew from ideas seeded in her previous works. Her experimental short, The Pit: A Study in Horror, helped develop the scenes where Purgatory is realized, and a few concepts in Doll Parts grew into becoming part of the origin tale established in Evangeline.

Sharon, Lois and Bram Receive Playground Honour

SharonLoisBram1 Toronto and East York Community Council has honoured children’s musical group Sharon, Lois and Bram, by naming a playground after them.

The ceremony was held this past Saturday at the June Rowlands Park, located at the corner of Daisville Ave. and Mt. Pleasant Rd.

Sharon Hampson, Lois Lilienstein and Bram Morrison were reunited for a special performance during the naming ceremony. In 2000 Lillinstein retired from touring with the group after the death of her husband. The last public performance of the trio was in 2008 at the Toronto Jewish Film Festival.

Snyder Gets Racy with Batmobile Tease

SnyderBatmobile Holy Heart attack Batman! Can I keep my beating organ at a steady rate when Zack Snyder, director of the Batman Vs. Superman feature film, reveals the newest incarnation of the Batmobile tomorrow? In all honesty, I’ll try. But I make no guarantee I won’t need a defibrillator when Gotham’s sick ride is made known.

Batman Vs. Superman is currently set to debut May 6, 2016 and will star Ben Affleck (Bruce Wayne / Batman), Henry Cavill (Clark Kent / Superman), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Gal Gadot (Diana Prince / Wonder Woman), Diane Lane (Martha Kent), Jesse Eisenberg (Lex Luthor), Laurence Fishburne (Perry White), and Jeremy Irons (Alfred).

FOX TV Gives the Go Ahead for Gotham!

Ever since Smallville, the formula for this specific sub-genre of superhero based television shows is to focus in on the hero’s youthful beginnings. There had been attempts to make a spin-off, namely with the aborted Aquaman series, but ever since then, to create a winning formula is tough. Thankfully Arrow altered the concept some–the series looks at the man as his status of a hero gets cemented in lore. Some fans thought the show was essentially Batman in disguise, since licensing at either DC or Warner Bros would not approve of a small screen version.

Bring on Fox TV’s Gotham, which thankfully changes all the previous fandom talk around. Almost like the predecessors, this series looks at the lives of many heroes and villains before they become the feared individuals from the comics. This television program may air this Fall. The company green-lit this production only a few days ago, so hopefully the product will not be rushed to meet this coming season. The wait for a polished product will be worth it, and many DC fans will be excited for what the teaser trailer is suggesting. The casting of the supporting characters looks very spot on.

Robin Lord Taylor will be a character to follow as the befuddled Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin, Camren Bicondova will certainly give Selina Kyle a punk-style aesthetic to please fans, and Cory Michael Smith will dominate as the enigmatic Riddler to create a certain unique carnage in a crime ridden Gotham. The list does the end there. The trailer shows that Poison Ivy (Clare Foley) will be part of this youthful foray. The trailer suggests the possibility that she spends her time locked up in the attic with her plants.

This series will deal with Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) as a primary character. The first episode will reveal him taking the young Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) under his wings and along with Alfred (Sean Pertwee), both will shape who this boy will eventually become. As for how much of an importance the young boy will be in the series, that is still unknown as very little press information has been released.

Instead of the heroes and villians, Gordon may well be the glue that keeps this series together.

With Disney’s Star Wars (no, not Lucasfilm) coming to a theatre next year, fans can be reinvigorated for what the future may hold for this franchise. But until then, let this date be a reminder to all.

Final Poster Roundup for How to Train Your Dragon 2

In How to Train Your Dragon 2, Stoick the Vast is getting a new dragon. Unless the Thunderdrum has evolved and changed shape, whatever type of beast the Leader of Berk is getting bears some semblance to a Triceratops.

As for how Thornado will feel towards his former rider, that’s unlikely to happen since the movie has yet to indicate if any lessons learned from Dragons: Defenders of Berk will be important in the film. Instead, what this movie will do is to take place a few years after and probably not acknowledge the friends or other clans met from the television series. Some fans may desire the return of Heather but that’s unlikely to happen.

With approximately a month and a half before this film’s release on June 13th, fans will no doubt be anxious to see what merchandise will follow. Poster collectors, however, will have a tough time tracking down the now nine posters. Hopefully Dreamworks or 20th Century Fox will be nice and offer prints or copies of them available for sale for fans to purchase when not every theater will give them out to the die-hard fans.
