Fans of fast paced cyberpunk themed first person shooters can get to look at Turbo Overkill for the PC today. This video game has been in steady development during the pandemic and players can now get to see how it’ll work for the PC.

This game published by Apogee Entertainment (better known for Max Payne, Rise of the Triad, Duke Nukem3D, Wolfenstein 3D, Prey, and more) is a delicious mix of retro and modern graphics, and it looks wild!  Developer Trigger Happy Interactive is handling farming out the work to port it to other systems like the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Those are expected to release later this year.

But for now, PC users can take this game for a spin on Steam. Turbo Overkill enters Early Access with eight dense, multi-layered stages, plus secret arenas, multiple difficulty settings, tons of character upgrades, and unlockable content. Five to eight hours of gameplay await even the most diehard shooter veterans, with more stages, abilities, guns, challenges, and quality-of-life features set for the coming months.

The Magic in Fantastic Beasts Lays Elsewhere

The world Fantastic Beasts takes place in is a dark and David Yates wastes no time in showing off this fact.

Fantastic Beasts PosterThe backstory in Warner Bros. Fantastic Beasts hides a troubled political time in the world and part of it is revealed in Secrets of Dumbledore. I firmly believe these movies are setting the stage for showing the Nazi’s rise to power. The visual motifs are there and my prediction is that Grindelwald will become one of Hitler’s elite. He’ll have his own department to wrangle the war so one social order dominates the world.

It’s a concept fans of Hellboy (and Indiana Jones) are familiar with. I’m hoping that’s the finale JK Rowling’s navigating towards. Although my prediction for this third film is wrong, I’m okay with it. There’s two more films that may address it, and wrap up the story.

Remembering Charlotte Salomon, The Animated Opus

This movie’s animation manages to deliver sense of pathos a live-action take may not deliver.

Charlotte (2021) - IMDbOpening April 22 in select theatres across Canada

The beauty behind the animated biography titled Charlotte lies in how the film imagines constructing this artist’s famous paintings. From a stroke or a wet wash, those markings convey an image that haunted her mind. She is an Expressionist painter and her works depict a world collapsing upon itself due to war. When she’s not making a social commentary about her world, this woman is looking deep at her own turmoil.

Anyone of Jewish faith, sympathisers included, had to go into hiding. Charlotte Salomon (voiced by Keira Knightley) was sent away.

This film humbly chronicles the key moments of her life and what she witnessed to inspire her to create the world’s first graphic novel. Some of her works are multi-layered. A transparency holding text gives the art an added context, unlike how an onomatopoeia adds sound to that still image. The dialogues often told a truism.

It’s No Spoiler! Behind the Scenes with Top Gun Maverick

This featurette releaased today looks at a few things that went on during production.

Top Gun Maverick Poster.jpgComing to theatres May 27, 2022

Nearly everyone knows just how much Tom Cruise was a taskmaster while making Top Gun Maverick. He’s a demanding entertainer for a reason, and it shows when he’s passionate about a film–especially one that helped make him a huge name in Hollywood.

This featurette looks at a few aspects he and his stars had to endure. A significant part of this film won’t be faked with CGI. Just how all those cameras are mounted onto planes for the external shots are a bit of a mystery, but I’m sure a home video release will explain that in due time.

I appreciate the care and attention Cruise puts into the movies he’s executive producing. The wait will be worth it, and to revisit this world is bound to be exciting. Plus, we get an official explanation for why this sequel took so long to come to be!

What Happens When Gangsters Face a Spiritwalker?

Yoon Jae-geun’s sophomore work continues his love for making gangster films, and what we find here is a man (Yoon Kye-sang) with no memories of who he was.

The premise behind Spiritwalker (유체이자) is a very intriguing one. Yoon Jae-geun’s sophomore work continues his love for exploring gangster politics, and what we find here is a man (Yoon Kye-sang) with no memories of who he was, and what he’s supposed to do in a jaunt around Seoul, Korea. What he sees in the mirror is not the image of himself. That’s all he really knows, and we’re on the same scary ride he’s in.

A bum calls for help, and he allows himself to be taken to the hospital for treatment. Twelve hours later, he wakes up in another body. The only thing that keeps him grounded is needing to find Jina (Lim Ji-yeon). The only person who believes he’s the same person in different bodies is that homeless man, Haengryo (Park Ji-hwan) he’s met before, who helps him navigate this crazy, mixed up world.
