Do Haptic Interfaces have a Future?

Haptic technology is still at its infancy. In order for this technology to be usable for the masses, the ideas must be right, otherwise, it’s just not going to fly.

Disney Tactile Display ScreenIn a few years, computer users and gamers might get the option to be able to get touchy-feely with their monitors and tablet screen. Varying textures can be simulated on a display, and that may include the feel of a person’s skin. There’s no doubt that one particular entertainment industry will be excited in what can be developed from it, and that can bring new meaning to what kind of new simulations can be offered to the viewer. In essence, this new invention is a form of haptic technology, and its use in video games have been around for some time in the form of force-feedback motion-controllers.

In an early report by Gizmag in 2012, Disney Research and Senseg was reported to have developed a system where a user’s fingertips can sense a simulated bump on a flat screen. Now if that included 3D projection, the beginnings of hard light projection may well become a reality. Remember Rimmer from Red Dwarf? He’s a hologram with no ability to interact with his environment. Later in the series, his projection unit was modified so that his light body is more “tangible,” and thus be indestructible.

Why VR at CES 2016 Is Not Necessarily Going to Fly

True VR should allow the person to run around instead of sitting within a confined space.

dk2-productA few media watch reports are saying that the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show will help launch Virtual Reality (VR) as a ready item for market. That’s been said last year and the year before, but the wait has been slow. The Oculus Rift and HTC Vive are two high-profile devices that will finally arrive in retail outlets and the PlayStation VR is to follow. Already out is Samsung Gear VR and it can be ordered through AmazonVR. But when people are required to strap on a piece of headwear to feel the illusion of being immersed, not everyone will take to this idea right away. One issue that still remains is that does the user have to sit down to experience the environment or can that person walk around until a piece of real world collides, making a dent in the headset he or she is wearing?

Eyeglass wearers are most likely not going to be able to try this out unless the space inside the box is designed to accommodate various eyewear designs.

The big issue with any new technology release is if there’s enough unique software to go with it.  The current pieces of simulated environment assumes the person is sitting down instead of moving around. Reality involves the person being able to interact with all the objects in that world, and not everything in the computerized realm is going to be real or handled with the hand, unless handled by a controller or force feedback gloves. Ultimately, the software that’s initially coming with the headwear is simply limited.

Gamers against Cancer is Racing Now till the 10th!

Games Done Quick LogoAwesome Games Done Quick is a yearly showcase event that began in 2010 and it takes place early January (taking place now till the 10th in 2016) to raise money for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. Its sister event, Summer Games Done Quick, takes place in July and supports Doctors without Borders. Anyone can apply, and there are even prize draws and bonuses that viewers can affect simply by donating. The best and amusing gamers are chosen from the community in the months leading up to each event.

These week-long marathons have gamers play in speedruns. This approach spotlights the player (known as a speedrunner) using almost every method at their disposal to complete games as quickly as possible. Everything like abusing game-breaking bugs, practicing tricks that have as little as a sixtieth of a second window to perform, and using technical knowledge of how the games are programmed are exploited.

Approximately 2.8 million dollars was raised in both of these events in 2015. The gamers who gather at these events show off a level of skill in video games that the average player can only gawk at.

Problems with Audio Mixing; How to Experience Star Wars: The Force Awakens

A frame of the IMAX scene in TFA.

Is watching Star Wars: The Force Awakens (TFA) three if not four times within opening week enough? When the film is a thrill ride from beginning to end, the answer is a resounding yes! Mind you, each viewing was done slightly differently to savour the cinema enhancing technology of RealD (3D), IMAX sized screens (a cinema slimmed version versus the 8 story sized proper screens), D-Box Motion Simulation (a flight simulator) and UltraAVX (3D sound with a large screen sized the same as IMAX’s).

Seeing it the way as J.J. Abrams intended will simply mean going to a regular showing with no thrills attached. When no 3D cameras were used during filming, there’s a difference that can be felt in the presentation. But heading to a proper IMAX cinema for that one sequence, presumably when Finn and Rey are running around on Jakku, what this director filmed is worth heading to the right theatre to.

Are D-Box Simulators the Future Movie Experience?

Not every film is worth getting the D-BOX experience but I can see the potential for where it can go if air ducts gets mounted into the chairs.

D-Box, The Experience will Move YouApproximately 70 movie theatres worldwide have D-BOX Simulators, customized seats which attendees can park their rear end to. Some may have more than 40 available chairs and for those people willing to pay the added premium, they will move with the flow of the film; in theory, they will experience the movie on a whole new level. The motion sometimes work and at other times will not. There’s no proper road map for the engineers to follow when they program the chairs’ gears and gyroscopes to respond to the movie.

The technology debuted when The Fast & Furious released on April 3, 2009. Not many theatres offered this thrill ride and patrons had to be living near major metropolitan centres that had a movie multiplex who bought into this format early. In Victoria, British Columbia, Cineplex Entertainment retrofitted their SilverCity Victoria location over the summer and I waited for the right film (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) to come out before taking on this experience. To lurch and sway to the motion of the Millennium Falcon made the experience fun! I lifted my feet off the ground so I could allow the chair to fully control my center of gravity than my body.

[Electric Bungalow] Kingston’s MobileLite is Feature Rich!

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)
ab55768_5Kingston Technology’s Kingston Digital 5-in-1 Mobile CompanionVR is a very versatile travel companion and I can see it being asked for as an item to put under the Christmas tree. When computer tablet and cell phone users find storage space is tight in their mobile units (especially when some units do not offer a microSD slot), being able to stream data from a centralized router / memory card reader / battery charger / internet hub comes in very handy.

For people who take lots of photos, the need to shuffle information to offline storage is a must. There are plenty of other devices from other manufacturers that do a similar job with matching features, but how it performs is with the file browsing software that’s provided instead of how many charges this device offers. In real world testing, it can fully charge two devices before giving up the ghost. When it has not been used for several months, this device shows it can truly hold its juice and still provide a charge!
