Gojira Japanese Movie PosterNot a lot of information is offered in Toho’s tease of the Mighty G’s return to the big screen in Gojira: Resurgence. The text can literally mean New Godzilla, so the meaning can vary depending on translation. The title. potential poster and teaser trailer released to wet appetites does not say much in what’s coming, and hopefully the direction will be good. The footage offered may not be used at all in the final product as all it offers is a lost footage from a cell phone user recording the feet of various people running away from some invisible threat. What’s created has the slight feel of Drew Goddard’s Cloverfield.

The teaser ends with the call of the mighty beast and thunderous stomps — but does that mean anything? For now, maybe that of the beast awakening from a long slumber.

Supposedly, the poster unveiled in a tweet by Japanese band Katokutai only explains the detailing put in the new beast’s look. The print is a three colour image that, when enhanced, reveals the scales of this radioactive beast and the tiny eyes it uses to strike fear.

Hideaki Anno (Evangelion) and Shinji Higuchi (Attack on Titan) will be sharing the directing duties in this film that’s scheduled for a July 29th, 2016 release.

AX ’97 Masquerade Video Surfaces on the Net

Anime Expo LogoWhen scouring the internet, it is not easy to find photos of early Anime Expos (AX)– especially the ones your parents went to. And it is even more rare to discover a video. But it is thanks to people like Michael Winslow, who treasure such memories, that videos like this even exist. Although the video clocks in at 2:00:17 the masquerade itself runs 1:46:05. That’s enough time to cover the entire event.

Shot in 1997, Anime Expo had just made a return to it’s previous venue of the Los Angeles Aiport Hilton Hotel in California. The last time AX had been at the Hilton was in 1995.

Rumiko Takahashi Manga Creations to Adorn Cup Noodles

By James Robert Shaw (The Wind up Geek)

Rumiko1When it came to promoting store-bought noodles to the Japanese public, using characters created by affluent manga artist Rumiko Takahasi (creator of Maison Ikkoku, InuYasha, and Rin-ne) is a no brainer. In fact we here at Otaku no Culture think the meeting at Aceccok to agree to such an idea would’ve taken about as much time as cooking one of their instant noodles.

In December Aceccook of Japan will release a pair of cup noodles featuring character artwork from Takahashi’s manga. The products are marketed with the 30-40 year-olds in mind but this may introduce earlier Takahashi characters to a whole new generation.

Tsukino-Con Announces First Guest of 2016!

By James Robert Shaw (The Wind up Geek)

JoshGrelleYou can tell Victoria’s little-con-that-could has not just expanded over the years but has grown gracefully. And no more is that evident in the selection of Tsukino-Con’s guests whose names get bigger and bigger with every passing con. Last year saw Japanese seiyuu actress Satsuki Yukino (Free!, Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040) join Tracey Moore (Care Bears, Sailor Moon) and Kyle Hebert (Dragonball Z, Fullmetal Alchemist) as the con’s special guests. With today’s announcement of Tsukin-Con’s first guest of 2016, fans should expect more of the same.

The first guest of 2016 will be none other than voice actor Josh Grelle. Grelle is an anime fan and a native of Clifton, Texas. He got his foot in the door of voice work when he was hired by the popular ADVision Films in January 2004. Since that time Grelle has become a seasoned veteran with such credits under his belt as Clannad, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Dragon Ball Z Kai, Itsuki in Initial D, and recently Armin in Attack on Titan.

Grielle’s work has also included some notable video games. He can be heard as Sima Shi in Dynasty Warriors 7: Xtreme Legends, Dave in Borderlands 2, and Xbalanque in Smite.

Attack on Titan’s Close Shave

TitanShave2By The Wind up Geek

According to these ads, seen recently on a subway train in Tokyo, hair removal isn’t just something for humans, it’s for Titans too. When a titan breaks down your city wall and stomps your friends into the ground, she doesn’t roll her eyes and think “oh really George, why can’t you just take me out for a curry for once”, she has more complex things on her mind. Things like “Why are they screaming? Is it my appearance? Did I not shave close enough this morning? I hope there’s not something in my teeth because that would really be embarrassing.”

But Those thoughts are washed away with what I believe are ads for shavers (if I am wrong, please comment to correct me) of Epiler (for women) and Men’s TBC brands. TBC is a cosmetics company established in Japan in 1976.
