Anime Series ‘Panzer World Galient’ Slated for Japanese HD Blu-ray Release Next Spring

panzerworldgalientBy James Robert Shaw (The Wind up Geek)

Sunrise’s animated series Panzer World Galient (機甲界ガリアン) is being released in Japan on Blu-ray for the very first time. The 25 episode series that originally aired on Nippon Television from 1984 to 1985 and spawned 3 original video animations (OVA) will be sold as part of a 5 double-sided disc box set. Galient has been previously released on DVD, first in 2008 as part of the “Anniversary” release and again in 2011 as part of Emotion’s “the best of” series. But this is the first time Galient episodes will be taken from the source tapes and remastered in high definition. All 25 episodes of the series plus the three OVAs (Earth Chapter, Sky Chapter and Crest of Iron) will be included in the Blu-ray box set.

Galient was directed by Ryōsuke Takahashi (Ozuma), written by Sōji Yoshikawa (Cyborg 009) with mechanical designs by Yutaka Izubuchi (WXIII: Patlabor the Movie 3). Both Takahashi and Yashikawa worked on the Armored Trooper VOTOMS series that premiered the year before. Galient‘s opening and ending themes were composed and performed by EUROX, a progressive Japanese rock band formed in 1984.

Tokyo Ghoul’s Katsuyuki Konishi Announced as Anime Revolution Guest of Honor!

katsuyuki-konishiBy James Robert Shaw (The Wind up Geek)

You might call Katsuyuki Konishi (小西 克幸) Koutarou Amon of Tokyo Ghoul, Ozma Lee of Macross Frontier, Tom Tanaka of Durarara!!, or Bulat of Akame ga Kill!. But no matter what character you know him for, he is widely regarded as one of the most in-demand voice actors in the business today and he is coming to Anime Revolution in Vancouver this summer.

An award-winning actor, Konishi got his first break as Volfogg on Sunrise’s 1997 animated series The King of Braves GaoGaiGar. He would go on to reprise Volfogg in the 2000 OVA The King of Braves GaoGaiGar Final. That was the start of what would be a successful career for Konishi voicing many now favourite characters of anime. His list of credits includes Laxus Dreyar of Fairy Tail, Johann Trinity of Mobile Suit Gundam 00, Pinion of Suisei no Gargantia, and Raikou in two Pokémon feature films.

One Piece: Gold is set to Weigh In Jan 10th in North America!

one_piece_film_gold_road_show_promoBy Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

Watching One Piece Film: Gold only makes me pine for more Lupin III material than Luffy (the lead character). The only reason is that I’m more of a fan of this character more than the other. The Lupin series by Monkey Punch has been around since the late 60’s and One Piece by creator/illustrator, Eiichiro Oda, was first serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1997. Both are popular in their own right, and who can’t love a gang of pirates having some pretty crazy, whacked out adventures?

Both still have an ongoing television series. When concerning the latter, these pirates have not gotten the ‘reboot’ (the series began in 1999) and this film is the thirteenth in the series. Both universes have their fans, and while I prefer one over the other, it has not stopped me from looking at the newer one on and off over the years, when there’s a story to pique my interest. The Vintage Tempest’s Picks of 2017 Animated Films to See

Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)
By Ed Sum
(The Vintage Tempest)

2017 is upon us, and this year seems light in comparison to last year’s stellar line-up of animated movies and direct-to-video products to must-see. DreamWorks Animation (one of my favourite studios) had three titles, but sadly with The Croods 2 dropped, the remainder does not seem as exciting. Time will tell, however, until official trailers for The Boss Baby and Captain Underpants are released.

In the international front, Tad Jones: The Hero Returns might be fun, though this title ranks more in the honourable mention front. Also coming is Howard Lovecraft and the Underworld Kingdom. No official word has been made yet, but if Arcana Studios is sticking to schedule, we can expect this release in September.

In a holdover from last year’s releases in the film festival circuit, a few reports is suggesting The Red Turtle will get a wider distribution. This winner deserves to arrive at more shores, as it’s a powerful story about a man stranded on a deserted island, and how he connects with a particular turtle. Leading the pack of movies I must see is one that is making rounds at festivals:

Window Horses
(Please check local listings, Q2 wide release)

Director: Ann Marie Fleming

This colourful animation caught my attention when the National Film Board of Canada reported about its West Coast première at the Vancouver International Film Festival. If only it was playing the same or next day when I was in Vancouver, I could have gone to see it. Thankfully it will be getting a wider distribution in the new year.

When considering it is about a young poet of mixed descent going to Iran to learn about her past, I feel she will discover that the world is interconnected in more ways than she realizes. The unique character designs is also another selling point, and I’ll be anxious to see where the plot goes.

WB Japan Releases Elric Brothers Photo for Fullmetal Alchemist Live-Action Movie

fullmetalalchemistla1By James Robert Shaw (The Wind up Geek)

Out of all the announced films for the year of 2017 that are gunning for the blockbuster position, is anyone as excited for the Fullmetal Alchemist live action movie as I am? Slated for December of this year, Fullmetal looks to have received a hefty shooting budget if the teaser trailer was any indication.

The movie follows the Elric brothers, Alphonse and Edward, in the fictional country of Amestris. In this world based off the manga series written and illustrated by Hiromu Arakawa, steam power is king and alchemy is one of the most practiced sciences.
