Top Blockbuster Films to Look Forward to in 2020

Plenty of Blockbuster Films are coming this year to make Disney the dominant force in entertainment again. Good or bad, this company is the engine that keeps on churning them out.

Tom Holland is keeping busy as details for the third Spider-Man film are being hammered out. As much as I like to see a certain anvil shaped villain enter the fore, it’s unlikely and the next film feels like it’s two years away than happening soon. After the success of Far From Home, I’m wanting more of this brand of Marvel and Sony Pictures magic!

On the live action front, I’m honestly impressed The Mouse is bringing the first title back to its roots. Thus begins a chronological list of films worth checking out:

Dolittle

January 17, 2020

Robert Downey Jr. will forever be remembered as Tony Stark Jr., aka Iron Man. Some may even cheer as he’s also Sherlock Holmes. Very few fans of this man will recall he was Chaplin—perhaps the best work he’s done in his prime. Now this man of a thousand characters is the seminal Doctor Dolittle, a Disney film which finally honours the setting to which the original stories by Hugh Lofting took place. Star power is definitely needed here.

Love those movies or hate ’em, I had no problems with Eddie Murphy’s version. They were made during a time as he shifted from a raunchy comedian to family guy. The studio was willing to take a chance on him, including suggesting a next generation to keep the franchise alive (which thankfully never happened)

Big Hero 6 Continues June 9th!

big-hero-6-premiere-date-detailsBy Ed Sum
(The Vintage Tempest)

Just in case fans of Big Hero 6 have missed it, the weekend of June 9th is the date to mark on the calendar for the animated television series! This date was announced on EW. On Saturday, the kickoff will be with the first two episodes teased at from last year, and on Sunday, two new tales will continue on the same time slot.

Perhaps more will be known about the mystery man who is out to clone Baymax. Ever since this robot appeared on the scene, he’s proved to be very versatile.  The debut episode sets up the new setting for the series. Takashi is still dealing with the loss of his brother and is even more down in the dumps with Baymax gone.  Fred is trying to convince the group that the city needs them but to see them as a cohesive fighting team will require more than a few episodes to establish. This version of the Avengers feels like 0.5

Examining the Juke Joints with Danger Boys: Punks in Osaka, a Preview

Trying to discover this Japanese punk rock scene has been described by some music journalists as hard to penetrate and it’ll take a documentary like Danger Boys: Punks in Osaka to penetrate.

Murahachibu and Zuno Keisatsu are two Japanese punk rock bands who helped form the punk rock music scene during the 70’s. Although the former shifted focus, and the other remained, to consider how their sound evolved to what is heard today, trying to discover what works has been described by some music journalists as hard to penetrate and it’ll take a documentary like Danger Boys: Punks in Osaka to break down this scene.

Theis world, according to a 2014 article in the Japan Times, is “notoriously difficult to penetrate. What’s there is said to be tucked away in the basements and upper floors of anonymous buildings, often in seedy parts of town, where the neighbours will be less likely to raise complaints against noise and loitering, with websites that update schedules only a few days before the actual events and that rarely link to any of the artists performing, live venues are like a hidden world open only to those who know the secret handshake.”

Seattle-based pseudo-punk band Tennis Pro entered this realm when they hit the road less travelled to gain recognition in their documentary Big in Japan (2014), but to penetrate Japan’s current scene within a world buried in another one is just as tough to uncover. Enter Danger Boys: Punks in Osaka, a documentary by Nick Romi (director) which is set to release December 11, 2017. This video can be pre-ordered at foreverunholystore.bigcartel.com and early birds will get a limited edition poster for a fantastic price of $10. This video will also be available on select streaming video services on the same day.

Yamato 2022 Lands With a 12-min Preview

2202-part-1-main-visualBy Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

Yamato (the old series or remake) will always have a special place in my heart. While the redo may seem to some fans as unneeded, I will watch it. The crisp new designs, expanded universe and the music … it gets me excited every time! Today marks a release of the first 12 minutes of Space Battleship Yamato 2202: Warriors of Love (宇宙戦艦ヤマト2202 愛の戦士たち), the second film of the series, a week ahead of the theatrical screening in Japan.

Based on the visuals and what I can understand in the piece, planets are being marked. As returning characters celebrate a peace of sorts (from the last movie), Kodai is in conference to hear about yet another threat that’s coming. Gatlantis is sweeping over the universe and approaching Earth.

The bumper on the top right exists to let viewers know about the upcoming theatrical release on Jun 24, 2017 and on the official Bandai Youtube page, pre-sales for a special limited edition blu-ray will also begin simultaneously as this volume will be released July 28th.

When 2 Worlds Collide (Again): TMNT Meets Usagi Yojimbo!

coverBy Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

To those comic book readers who missed reading about the meeting of two of the greatest anthropomorphic warriors, a group of agile reptiles and a rabbit (and those issues are hard to find) there’s no need to fret. Coming this summer is a reunion of sorts. After twenty long years, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are hopping into Usagi Yojimbo‘s world in a special one-shot comic by Dark Horse Comics!

Crossing over to other dimensions or realms is nothing new in either franchise properties. When considering a lot of time have passed since the two last interacted, something is bound to change. I’m wondering if the two even really remember each other.
