The Second Ghostbusters 2016 is a Slight Improvement!

PHCyGWbP0engFK_2_lBy Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

I must admit, this second trailer is far better for enticing me to check out Paul Feig‘s reboot. My reason to see this film is to find out if Kevin (Chris Hemsworth) succeeds at becoming a Ghostbuster. I haven’t watched this actor’s other works where he’s working on honing his comedic chops, but to see him dressed up as a nerd is appealing. To see him, as this trailer reveals, turn sinister and ride off somewhere to take on a potentially villainous role … Well, I’m sold! This actor has played more charming roles, and to see him as menacing as Vigo the Carpathian has me curious.

Even if he succeeds at being exorcised or he has a bigger role in the film than previously led on, I wonder if he will equalize the status quo of an all-female paranormal team. Since the animated version had Janine Melnitz as a Ghostbuster to bail the guys out, I have no problems with any role-reversal going on. Fans owning the box set of this great animated series can check her out in “Mr. Sandman, Dream Me A Dream,” “Janine Melnitz, Ghostbuster,” and “Jailbusters.” In the Extreme series, she put on the uniform again, as I recall. I’d love to see a nod to the animated series approach to accepting new members, although I doubt the writers of this film even bothered to look at the past material.

Ghostbusters Director Paul Feig says Bullies Aren’t the True Geeks

1271033 - THE WALKBy James Robert Shaw (The Wind up Geek)

Director of the latest Ghostbusters film, Paul Feig, has faced a lot of hate since the announcement over a year ago that an all-female reboot of the franchise was to make its way to the silver screen.

The venom spewed at Feig has been of the scale reserved for only the most heinous of criminals yet Feig continues to fight his detractors, telling one who printed abuse for months over Twitter to “go **** yourself.”

Two weeks ago the Ghostbusters debut trailer became number 21 in the “Most Disliked YouTube Videos” as compiled by the YouTube channel MyTop100Videos (it is currently in the number 12 spot as of May 8, 2016). Now the New York Daily News has amended an interview it published on May 2, 2016 when it was found quotes used by the author of Feig defending Ghostbusters were in fact from an old interview two years previous. Feig’s prepared response of this incident was distributed via his official Twitter account earlier today (edited for coarse language):

Ghostbusters, the Story so Far, the 2016 Trailer (not a reboot?) & More ….

As the trailer explains, this new team is fighting someone who is releasing new ghosts into the city. However, a Ghostbusters nivue can’t be ghostbusters without a spectacle like Slimer.

Ghostbusters 2016 PosterI’m still leaning on the dislike side of whether Paul Feig’s reboot of the Ghostbusters franchise will be good. Was he involved at the construction of the trailer at all? Probably not, and the person who made this trailer implies 30 years have passed since “four scientists” (technically, three university professors and a dude off the street) saved New York City. This summer, a new team will answer the call.

Feig said his film will have no connection with the original movies. Misdirection has been done before. Remember Star Trek: Into Darkness? Obviously someone at the editing room knows otherwise. Why make references to the classic 80’s film at all? Does that trailer editor know something that this director is fibbing about? When considering the canon and established lore, ever since the incident with Vigo the Carpathian of Moldavia, supernatural activity took a dive. The ghosts of the past are buried, and there’s no need for paranormal investigators to put a cage on the spirits who decided to linger about. They pose no threat!

Enter Ghostbusters the Video Game (available on multiple platforms, like the Playstation 3 on AmazonGhostbusters), which is officially considered a continuation of this universe. Here, the team are now official city contractors and are training new recruits so their operation can branch out to other cities. Walter Peck, now head of the Paranormal Contracts Oversight Commission, is a continued nuisance and museum curator Dr. Ilyssa Selwyn discovers the architect who designed the building that Gozer landed on, had a grander plan. Ivo Shandor also created the network of tunnels to channel ectoplasmic slime through the city that was used by Vigo. Ivo returned as a ghost to assume Gozer’s place but as with any cheery eyed marshmallow giant who must explode, the plans have to be put to rest.

The Ghostbusters Celebrates Its 30th Anniversary!

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

ghostbusters-30th-anniversary-viewing-party

When I’m a paranormal investigator and pop culture geek, just what am I going to do on June 7th, 2014? I’m looking for ghosts and celebrating the 30th anniversary of Ghostbusters of course! I have a box of unopened Stay Puft Marshmallows (the caffeinated kind), both movies on Blu-ray to watch, the video game (PS3 edition) that I still have to finish, and a glow in the dark t-shirt to wear — when the weekend is over, I’m gonna feel like Slimer after gulping down a banquet. A lot of fun was experienced for those who joined in the social media bandwagon that began at 12pm PST, but alas, when I’m out chasing ghosts since after midnight, I needed my sleep!

But it’s not just this movie that started my life down the road to real investigative work. Scooby Doo and The Three Investigators were just as pivotal to influencing my years in pursuing the unknown and coming up with hypothesizes in what the other side may entail.

But for today, cheers have to go to Ivan Reitman. Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson for making my childhood become what it is: fun-filled with sugar plump Stay Puft marshmallow men floating around my head. Waitaminute, they’re green and … eeew. SLIMMMER!!!!

(For the lucky thousands, there is an official touring art exhibit that will be hitting Chicago and San Diego soon; it’s been to New York and Los Angeles, already. Maybe if Canadians yell loud enough, it’ll hit Vancouver and Toronto too?)

Halloween is a Perfect Day to Play Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon

Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon

Luigi has a bright career as a door to door Hoover salesman on Halloween night. He can leave the family plumbing business, ditch Mario and go out on his own. Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon for the Nintendo 3DS is an entertaining action and puzzle game even though there are a few interface problems. And for fans of classic haunted house scenarios and paranormal pop culture, the little nuances placed into the level design can be appreciated. Gamers are getting a dose of a Ghostbusters style video game done right, a tour into Disney’s Haunted Mansion with a flashlight and a walkthrough of a Hammer Films retrospective of everything that goes bump in the night.

The game has four estates that Luigi has to deal with. Each of them are further divided into sub-levels (floors) and somewhere in the mansions are pieces of a crystal that he has to recover in order to save EverShade Valley from a Kirby-like evil spirit. Professor E. Gadd recruited Luigi to do the job because that was who he met in the original game. Dark Moon is a continuation from the game released twelve years ago on the Gamecube. And the professor has been spending the intervening years studying the nomenclature of a ghost.

LEGO Ghostbusters? Oh Yes, Brick it on!

An anniversary LEGO Ghostbusters set is one step closer to realisation.

thumb640x360-2More than 8,000 supporters have made their voices heard on LEGO Cuusoo, and an unofficial number of 10,000 has made the LEGO company consider manufacturing a LEGO Ghostbusters 30th anniversary set.

The entire team of Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Egon Spengler, Winston Zeddemore and Slimer will get recreated in LEGO. The Ecto-1 and Firehouse will be the centerpiece and … waitaminute, where’s Janine? She’s just as important too, and let’s hope she is not forgotten.

On the CuuSoo page, LEGO stated: “Ghostbusters fans around the world have shown that they want to see a commemorative LEGO set and you’ve now reached the milestone where we will evaluate the potential of creating a set based on your proposal.

“We’ll build concept models and determine if the concept meets our high standards for what it takes to be a LEGO product. This includes factors such as playability, safety, and fit with the LEGO brand. Every potential LEGO product goes through a process like this and must meet the same standards.”
