The Vintage Tempest’s Emerald City Comic Con Journal 2014

I am not fast enough to run around like Speedy Gonzales and absorb the fun Emerald City Comic Con offers all in one go. Comics, cinema and ‘toons are my life — to spend a good part of the con getting to meet my favourite artists, creators and television/movie stars spanning decades meant doing a lot of prioritizing.

To get my nerd on depends on when I have time to drain my thoughts out and process them like Dumbledore in front of his Pensieve. With Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle, Washington, the experience is mind-blowing. I started going to this show in 2012 and I knew I had to make attending an annual pilgrimage — or rather a tradition! When this event has grown to have its events and exhibits housed in three buildings and multiple floors, just what can one guy do?

I am not fast enough to run around like Speedy Gonzales and absorb all the fun this convention offers in one go. Comics, cinema and ‘toons are my life — to spend a good part of the con getting to meet my favourite artists, creators and television/movie stars spanning decades meant doing a lot of prioritizing. Looking for back-issues of Marvels, DC’s and Independents were the furthest things from my mind. In fact, two-thirds of my time was spent in the main Exhibit Hall gleaming little tidbits of information about what’s coming in comic or cartoon land. Yes, a Fall of Cthulhu Omnibus collection is coming (hopefully by the end of the year), and the next Transformers cartoon will focus on the antics of Bumblebee.

Karen Gillan to appear at ECCC 2014!

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

Emerald City Comicon announced today that Karen Gillan will be at this year’s show on Sunday. That’s great for a busy actress whose next big role will be Nebula in Marvel Entertainment’s Guardians of the Galaxy, due in theatres August. But for the rest of the world, she is best known for playing Amy Pond in Doctor Who.

As for what she will be available for during the convention — panels, photo ops or autographs — no official word is given. The best advice is to check out the ECCC 2014 webpage when schedules get posted. That’s usually a week before the event. But as for tickets, the best plan is to have pick up tickets sooner than later since they have been selling out through online sales fast.

John de Lancie lands at Emerald City 2014!

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

John de Lancie

Emerald City Comiccon announced today that Q himself will be at next year’s big event! For mortals, that means John de Lancie will be appearing all three days at this show.

This versatile actor made his way into the science fiction scene by playing the irrepressible and omnipotent anti-hero in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space 9 and Voyager. His on-screen panache made this character a unique fixture in the lexicon of this series and his ability to immerse himself into the roles he plays make him an actor that must be followed.

But with a career spanning nearly 40 years, some long-time television viewers may recall his appearance in The Six Million Dollar Man and Emergency! He’s become a fixture in the pop culture scene with roles that includes Stargate SG-1, but he shows that he has a voice to remember in Duck Dodgers and Young Justice. To hear his take in how television entertainment has evolved will no doubt be one huge panel worth attending, and to find out what he will be doing next will be equally exciting.
