Two Otaku’s Hopes for a Big Hero 6 Sequel

Just what can fans expect from a sequel to Big Hero 6? The standard response is only if a great story exists to warrant a continuation. That was what co-director Chris Williams told CinemaBlend a week or so ago. But with an Academy Award under their belts, rumblings from voice actor Genesis Rodriguez and very good sales since this title’s release, to not continue in this cash cow can be considered remiss.

With news that a Frozen 2 sequel is indeed in the works, to not continue forth with another animated superhero action-adventure film will have some folks petitioning for a continuation somehow. A comic book follow-up is easier to create and a television series will not necessarily be as exciting as the movie. Sometimes the seeds of how a new franchise can grow are nestled into the first film and they may get explored when expanding a world is required.

A Look Into Shout! Factory’s Nightbreed and Lord of Illusions

Only the die-hard fans and film studies enthusiast will enjoy the extra content in the bonus disc that comes in this latest home video release of Clive Barker’s Nightbreed.

nightbreed-blu-ray-1The underground world of Midian was very much alive within me many years ago, even before I discovered Clive Barker’s Cabel. I loved the narrative and it spoke to me as there were times I felt misunderstood. Life of an outcast as a nerd was never easy but I adapted. When the film Nightbreed appeared in 1990, I hoped some of the themes explored in the book would get translated over. Instead, what was presented was totally alien. This film was not Barker’s story and I wondered why. My favourite moments were either cut out or never written in.

As a rated R film, I hoped the way Boone connected to Baphomet would be represented but alas ….

It’s a Good Time for a Marvel Nerd: Dates Announced up to 2019 & Thoughts!

Marvel Comics Entertainment is telling the world why they are indeed mighty today. At a special event in Hollywood’s El Capitan Theater, this company teased press and fans alike with trailers, speeches and title cards highlighting what “Phase 3” of their films will entail.

Marvel Comics Entertainment is telling the world why they are indeed mighty today. At a special event in Hollywood’s El Capitan Theater, this company teased press and fans alike with trailers, speeches and title cards highlighting what “Phase 3” of their films will entail, leaving some fans who can’t be there for real deciding to follow this event through streaming media and twitter reports. Some may well have thought Phase 2 blitzed by too fast even though it hasn’t.

On Bill Murray and St. Vincent, A Movie Review

StVincentMaybe there is a big reason as to why Bill Murray isn’t interested returning to the Ghostbusters universe. He looks ready to retire from the acting world for good after appearing in the movie St. Vincent. However, this film is not going to mark the end of his illustrious career as more films are in the pipeline featuring either him or his voice.

Although he’s the star of this comedic social drama about Vincent, an unlikable misanthrope, there’s a heart of gold that’s gently wanting to come out — hence this film’s title. He takes a liking to Oliver Bronstein (Jaeden Lieberher), a scrawny but very intelligent 12-year old. Lieberher provides some brilliant young Macaulay Culkin type moments and his talent should not go unnoticed, especially when his character is what ultimately wins many an audience’s heart. As Oliver, he’s tossed into a world he’s not ready for. The story mixes in elements of a coming of age tale along with awkward father-son style moments even though these two are not related. In the way they bond, they might as well be grandfather having fun with the grandson he never had much like how PIXAR’s Up, worked.

Want to Help bring Doctor Who to the Pacific Northwest?

25 long years may well be a fitting time and reference to the last known Doctor Who star-studded event that happened in Vancouver, BC. The fine folks who once ran the clubs Telefantasy Appreciation Society of Canada and the Time Meddlers of Vancouver were most likely responsible for that event and now they are regrouping to hold a two or three-day event for possibly late 2015. But without the full support of Vancouver fandom at large, it may not happen.

Without these fan run events, corporate type shows could ruin the landscape. There’s nothing wrong with Creation Con Entertainment’s events since they are tailored for the uber-fan, but not everyone can afford their tickets. The more an individual pays, the more privileged offerings they can get. Many events/conventions include this option to stay competitive, and thankfully they are not banking on it to sell attendance.

Whatever the plan may be for a potential Doctor Who Convention, being able to attend and pay at the door will bring lots of fans. But before speculation can happen, if you’re from the Pacific Northwest and think we need more fan-run events aside from V-Con (which is growing strong), this particular convention may well provide the voice that a corporation does not need to be formed to run a show.

The meeting will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2014 from 12pm to 3pm.

Not Pleased with Dreamworks: Dragons move to Netflix

An all new broadcast direction will be in store for Hiccup and gang in DreamWorks’ Dragons. New seasons will be “exclusively” broadcast on Netflix when the series returns in Spring 2015. No explanation was given for the change and not everyone subscribes to Netflix. Mixed feelings will no doubt spread when children are tuning in find their dragons are not offered on regular channels anymore. Hopefully the executives at Cartoon Network are smart enough to hold on to what they can broadcast: Series One: Riders of Berk and Series Two: Defenders of Berk.

People who are not interested in buying into the Netflix model will be left waiting for the DVDs (if that’s still going to happen) to release months after the end of season to get their Toothless fix. Just what kind of hold Netflix has with DreamWork’s best franchise is no doubt being kept secret much like in how Drago Bludvist, the villain in the upcoming movie, plots to use the dragons he captures against the free city of Berk. He also aspires to take over the world.

Fans will at least have Cressida Cowell’s original booksDragons to read and the comic books by Titan Publishing to keep their appetite sated. Toothless will most likely approve.

However, tasteless is the better word for a ‘global’ decision to limit who can continue watching this series. Thankfully, no country is being prevented from subscribing into Netflix.
