Journey into the Art of Star Wars Rebels, Oct 1st, 2019!

Stranger ThingsBy Ed Sum
(The Vintage Tempest)

Dark Horse Books and Lucasfilm proudly present the official look inside one of the galaxy’s most beloved shows in The Art of Star Wars Rebels (Amazon pre-order link). This book is going to be an incredible hardcover amassing art and creator commentary chronicling four seasons of adventure in a galaxy far, far away, and I am one who has put in an order right away.

No animated series has stayed faithful to the defining vision which visits “The Force” in The Clone Wars and what it represented in the original trilogy. It manages to go beyond, if not surpass, in my opinion. The last few episodes of the final season of Rebels ventures into new territory similar to Yoda’s adventure with Clone Wars: Lost Missions, and to anxiously wait for this book may well shed light in what Dave Filoni had in mind when those episodes were written.

From the Press Release:

Laying it On The Line with The LEGO Movie 2

Stranger Things

By Ed Sum
(The Vintage Tempest)

  • Spoiler Alert

Everything is not quite awesome in Bricksburg in The LEGO Movie Part Two. Now dubbed Apocalypseburg, the Mad Max theme plays throughout as the citizens attempt to thwart an invading species of bricks. The set up is simple: In the real world, events continue after younger sister Bianca is allowed to the basement where this “world” lives and she can bring her Duplo. And sometimes, certain characters are not who they are. This sense of accepting who they inside define what makes this sequel special.

Can Fate be Changed with Iceman 2: Time Traveller?

Stranger ThingsBy Ed Sum
(The Vintage Tempest)

Following up on the events of the last film, The Iceman 2: The Time Traveller (冰封侠: 时空行者) proves He-Ying is a tough nut to crack. His loyalty is never questioned, but yet his brothers-in-arms are easily corruptible. This Chinese production is coming to North America courtesy of Well Go USA Entertainment with a video release on Feb 19th, 2019.

This film originally released in November 2018 to lacklustre box office results. When a lot of action-adventure Asian films are out to create that blockbuster experience ala Marvel Entertainment, director Raymond Yip tries his best and gives audiences Quantum Leap instead of Doctor Who. The lead is played by Hong Kong action star Donnie Yen (甄子丹).

Making Polterheist, an Overnight Interview with Dave Gilbank

When the budget is tight, and you are dealing with a possession meets crimeland scenario, Polterheist has all the makings of being a cult film.

How can anyone go wrong with a crime heist type film with supernatural elements mixed in? When the budget is tight, and you are dealing with a possession scenario, Polterheist has all the makings of going either way. In what I found when watching this indie work is a huge respect and perfect use of the tropes commonly found in a ghost story.

Quite often, it is not about the scares that can take place. Instead, it’s with how unfinished business gets resolved, especially by those whose life gets cut short. In this hilarious mashup of drama and comedy, I was certainly hooked. This mini-review serves as my intro to Dave Gilbank, the writer-director of Polterheist. He’s been making independent works for about 15 years, and is now based in the UK–the place to experience many a classic haunt due to its millennia-old history–and I had to ask how this story came about.

Netherworld Collectables Celebrates 6 Years This Weekend!

Darryl GasbarriThe Lower Mainland is not home to many unique collectables shops. For horror entertainment, Netherworld Collectables in New Westminster, BC is the place to go. On Saturday, Feb 16th, the shop will be celebrating its 6th anniversary! Confirmed are appearances from actress Tristan Risk, burlesque dancer Jacqueline Breakwell, and actor Mike Kovac (to name a few) and many other surprises to come.

Darryl Gasbarri is a chap who knows his material. He’s been a fan of the genre since the 80s. To know its origins which includes Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto and the influence German Expressionism had on the Universal Monsters from the Golden Age of Hollywood is just as important, but it’s his fondness for lower budget B movies of other eras that keeps him going. He recalls the days where he and his pals would meet to watch anything they could find at the video rental shop. To reflect those times, his store carries an eclectic stock of material from this era, which includes light up VHS tapes! (for display only) But the list does not end there. There are movie props hanging from the ceiling and a human spine in the middle of the store. A morgue this place is not, but a curious shop with taxidermy items (supplied by Cranium of Curiosities) it can easily become!

“When I got older and I was getting more into the scene, I found it was very difficult to get things that I wanted to own,” laughed Gasbarri.
