Mr. Higgins Returns for a sequel from Dark Horse Comics

Mr. Higgins

In addition to this weekend being Hellboy day at select comic book stores, a lot more fun is coming for those who love Mike Mignola‘s works.

Coming this fall, Dark Horse Comics will publish the original graphic novel, Our Encounters with Evil: Adventures of Professor J.T. Meinhardt and his Assistant Mr. Knox. Now try to say that five times fast! It’s tough to, but this sequel to the acclaimed graphic novel Mr. Higgins Comes Home, will be sure to please.  Hellboy creator Mignola and artist Warwick Johnson-Cadwell have a new tale to tell:

Disney’s Snow White Gets the Dark Horse Treatment

Mr. Higgins

Dark Horse Comics and Disney are reawakening a classic Disney tale in Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Written by award-winning author Cecil Castellucci with art by Gabriele Bagnoli, this comic book retelling revisits the timeless classic of Snow White.

Snow is more than a damsel in distress in this retelling; she possesses a heart and soul that yearns for knowledge, love, and acceptance. Made to work in her own castle by her wicked stepmother, the Queen, Snow’s world changes the day she meets her prince charming and her jealous stepmother tries to have her killed. Snow flees to the forest to hide and finds sanctuary with a family she never could have expected in the boisterous seven dwarfs. Can her heart still flourish with the shadow of the queen’s hate looming over her, and only the lingering hope of seeing her prince again?

This three-issue series will no doubt offer a new take, and the first issue goes on sale June 16, 2019, and is available for pre-order at your local comic shop.

From Emerald City to Capital City Comic Con …

Capital City Comic Con LOGO (old)By Ed Sum
(The Vintage Tempest)

With Capital City Comic Con (4C) less than a week away, just what I’ll be doing here is to run two role-playing games, Call of Cthulhu, and also host a panel about the paranormal pop culture scene. I authored enough content not only here, but also for Absolute Underground Magazine, 28DLA.com and Drunk in a Graveyard to know the trends. I have been a paranormal enthusiast ever since Scooby Doo graced the screens back in the ’60s. I’m not that old, but I love those classics!

This show takes place March 22–24, 2019 in Victoria, British Columbia. It has big goals and while it will never compare to the mainland shows, it can hold its own. This event is like that Little Engine That Could. I’ve talked to Biajo Woodward of Cherry Bomb Toys to know it will take years before the loftier ideas can get realized. Support from different industries is needed. In the meantime, it keeps chugging along, and I know at least part of the team simply want to offer good things for the community to enjoy. For those fans wanting something quieter, I recommend this island grown convention. It’s quaint.

Takeaways from this year’s Emerald City Comic Con

Emerald City Comic Con LOGODespite changes which had many fans vocal about the 16th annual Emerald City Comic Con, I found they were not too distracting to the overall experience. Attending the event for all four days than my usual two had me quickly accustomed to the modifications. Walking between hotels was not a big deal. The disabled were able to get around too. Escalators and elevators (twelve of the latter were available) and the slowdown was not completely terrible. Proper planning can allow most to arrive at their respective panel in time.

The added security is a must when considering the climate these days. With more conventions are taking precautions to protect the attendees, they are needed. My pro tip includes having a pouch to keep all items that can set off detectors and staff can see what you have instead of waving a wand.

At the time writing, than posting, the third wave of crowdfunding the creation for more Elder Dice is surpassing expectations! Ever since Infinite Black offered customized dice for Call of Cthulhu and RPG enthusiasts, demand has been exceedingly great! This latest campaign is hitting every stretch goal, and just where it’ll go next depends on what fans want. Next up are Doom Edition d2 coins and they have been unlocked. Could there be any more, or has this company run out of ideas?

These symbol-based dice sets are based on the strange and occult glyphs as described by H.P. Lovecraft and later artists interpreting this author’s works. The Elder Sign, Seal of Yog-Sothoth, Star of Azathoth, Sigil of the Dreamlands are just the names of… Admirers of Infinite Black’s designs will have a tough time deciding on what to get. Maybe it’s best to collect them all. I almost did. This latest campaign offers a wicked playmat which takes inspiration from Egyptian papyri.
