In This Corner of the World Arrives This Week to Home Video

14 Nov

corner-of-world-posterSunao Katabuchi’s In This Corner of the World  (この世界の片隅に) is arriving this week, on November 14th, onto home video. Anime enthusiasts will most likely have picked up this title by now, and for those who have not, this title is worth putting into the collection for the poetic journey Suzu (the protagonist) has to face. She has no knowledge of the grander picture. She knows the wartime situation in Japan is dire, and she adjusts by staying completely naive to the whole drama. In what she does have to face, her strength and perseverance shine.

Pre and post, while audiences know that the inevitable bombing of Hiroshima is near, no one else does in this story. Audiences will get glued to every moment as the film shows the date and we wonder how Suzu’s family and the one she married into will fare.

This release includes a few extras to help viewers understand more about this animated product. Included are: “A Look at Post-Screening Q&As with director Sunao Katabuchi and producer Taro Maki” and a 16-page preview of the graphic novel by Fumiyo Kouno that inspired the film. The original theatrical trailer rounds out this collection. More about this content will be looked at in-depth when our order arrives in the mailbox.

For a full review of the film, please look at Ed Sum’s review here. While not everyone had the chance to see this movie theatrically, the opportunity to watch it at home should not be missed. This release comes courtesy of Shout! Factory.

EmpireSetBy Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

If you are a Full Moon Pictures addict like me, I am seriously considering pre-ordering Charles Band’s The Empire Pictures Blu-ray Collection. Pre-sales have begun (it started yesterday) and although I’m hard pressed for money, I’m seriously considering hitting a casino to break the bank so I can buy it! I have been waiting for certain films like Ghost Town to get a release for a long time and while others like From Beyond and Robot Jox are available as singles, to see it all put together in a comprehensive package, which includes a 24-page book with notes from the producer and Empire of the B’s author Dave Jay is very enticing.

This company is working with Shout! Factory to release this box set and only 600 editions will be made. A bit of stock will be held back for sales at conventions Full Moon will be at, but if you do not have any of the titles in your video collection yet, then this set is worth obtaining! Especially if you do the math:

Gwen Stefani’s animated series Kuu Kuu Harajuku is coming to North America courtesy of Shout! Factory and DHX Media. This modern variation on the Josie and the Pussycats concept is a fun diversion for those looking for something different and it can now be enjoyed at home as the company rolls out home video release in the U.S. and Canada. 26 Episodes are made.

Mark Shoeman, Territory Manager at DHX Media, said: “The US market is a huge territory for us and one where Kuu Kuu Harajuku is proving to be widely popular with its audience on Nickelodeon, so it was crucial for us to appoint a strong home entertainment company in the region. Shout! Factory understands the market, and importantly for us, the kids’ sector, and we feel they are the ideal company to take this highly original series beyond broadcast into DVD.”
