With Grendizer U Inception, this latest take is not necessarily part of a reboot that began with Grendizer U, but instead is a deeper layer of backstory added on top. With Tatsuto Higuchi handling this prequel of sorts, the update feels like it’s in good hands. Back when Go Nagai shifted from one kind of story to another, he probably didn’t realise his work would help define the giant robot genre. It began with Mazinger Z in 1972, and when he introduced Grendizer three years later, the 74-episode series set a precedent before Gundam came along.

Titan Manga’s Release of Toxic Super Beasts is Wild. The Story So Far….

Toxic Super Beasts blends kaiju action, dark science fiction, and mystery as genetically altered humans battle monstrous threats. With Toy(e)’s striking creature designs and Nykken’s growing conspiracy, this manga offers plenty for fans of disaster stories and Attack on Titan.

Toxic Super Beasts asks just how some giant monsters are born, and when Earth’s original titans were dinosaurs, the kind some geneticists hope to harvest genes from, Jurassic World Rebirth comes to mind. When the harvesting grounds aren’t exactly safe, we need genetically engineered metahumans who can go toe to toe with these kaiju. And that’s what writer Nykken and artist Toy(e) are bringing to the page.

This manga tosses more than a few ideas into the melting pot. It is one part disaster story, another part Frankenstein, with perhaps Attack on Titan as the cherry on top. Kazuki Kisaragi leads a unit tasked with collecting monster DNA alongside Miko Mikoshiba, a woman who may not be what she seems. She’s a hybrid with minimal knowledge of her past.

Titan Manga and Five Star Stories. The Anxious Wait Won’t Be Long.

Let’s hope Titan Manga and Five Star Stories remain committed to deliver this lucious saga to the English-speaking masses instead of stalling.

Thankfully, the Five Star Stories manga is still going strong in Japan. Even though it has effectively reinvented itself after Volume 12 of the tankōbon release, most people have rolled with the changes. While purists may take issue with the work being referred to as Gothicmade, the shift at least establishes a foundation for where future stories are headed. The scope feels less like a simple continuation and more like a reframing, one where the saga leans into legacy rather than immediate battlefield drama.

Instead of diving into a massive editorial on the changes, I’ll simply say this, as long as sales remain strong, I’m hopeful Titan Books’ new label stays committed to republishing the full Toypress run up to that volume, where it never saw a translation for the English-speaking market, and continues onward into the expanded era of the story. With a possible release of three volumes per year similar to the previous run, it won’t take long to catch up! To note, the English edition was further separated into smaller chapter releases. There are 26 books which cover Japanese Volumes 1 through 10. Volume 11 and onward have yet to be translated.

Titan Manga’s Ghostly Darkness of Kanata Certainly Knows How to Haunt!

Titan Manga is not resting as more horror themed works are scheduled for release this year. The editorial team are picky and to give new talents their due is appreciated, especially after reading past works, like Shadows of Kyoto, which is self contained. But with Ghostly Darkness of Kanata (幽闇のカナタ), what it sets up is perhaps more to come. What I adore most is how it looks into why some spirits choose to remain on Earth rather than move on.

I also love how they are depicted. I’m sure Noct Koike (writer) and Chika Ishikawa (artist) had to come to an agreement over respecting traditional depictions, like not having visible feet, and considering how spirits appear to others. The artist’s work mirrors what I’ve experienced when investigating the unknown. Some spirits look like projections pulled from dirty celluloid film.

Do You Know What Lurks Within The Shadows Of Kyoto? It’s Sure to Scare!

If you’re visiting Japan this winter to experience the various delights this country has, you might think twice after reading the manga, Shadows of Kyoto! This work brings to life various local legends, and they’re frightening!

When one of the best lines from the manga Shadows of Kyoto is “Shall I show you the real Kyoto? (裏京都)” It’s a very chilling hello when the protagonists from each tale meet Kotone, a mysterious woman who appears in each story. That quote is going to be as famous as “They’re coming to get you, Barbara” (from Night of the Living Dead) should a movie producer want to adapt this debut manga by Yumeya.

Although not a lot of information is available online about this talented storyteller, maybe it’s because this artist is relatively new. According to the Anime News Network, Yumeya debuted the manga on the Comic Tatan website in August 2020 and ended it that November. The single compiled book volume shipped in Japan in December 2020. And when Titan Manga published their version with a volume label, this misleading information will have some readers wondering.
