Paint Me Up! Owen Wilson and The Art of….

Although Brit Mcadams didn’t get to make the movie he hoped for, what he crafted in Paint is still amusing.

The gentle country melodies of John Denver highlights Paint more than Owen Wilson playing Carl Nargle, a character which looks like Bob Ross, behaves like Bob Ross, but isn’t Bob Ross. That’s because writer/director Brit McAdams probably didn’t get the okay from his estate to make a telling biography. The real Ross found his passion for painting while in the military and the conflict he had with the instructors there helped shape his craft. And just where Carl found his isn’t fully revealed.

What this filmmaker reworked into a story can’t even be considered remotely close to a parody of the man. Although Wilson is the perfect choice because he nearly has the same cander as the painter, to be typecast can be bad. Even though he plays a similarly loosey goosey priest in Disney’s Haunted Mansion (review coming soon), I find he’s at his best when being serious. I particularly liked him as Mobius in Marvel’s Loki over everything he’s collectively done in his career.

When Texas is Home to the Dogman Triangle, Should Ranchers be Afraid?

Some Small Town Monsters are scary big, and as for what lurks in Texas, The Dogman Triangle offers up plenty of stories to ponder at.

Available to stream on iTunes, Amazon Prime Video, and FandangoNOW.

Like many other cryptozoology documentaries, Small Town Monsters can only offer so much about these creatures said to be roaming the fringes of civilization. The latest, The Dogman Triangle, considers the history of reported werewolf (wild canines in this case) sightings in Texas. Like other known areas of mystery, whether their reach extends beyond a certain geographical region needs to be explored.

The background music helps shape the narrative and as a fan of the Weird West, I had to check this latest by Seth Breedlove out. The sound design helped to get me inspired, and as for whether the stories are true or not, it doesn’t really matter. After watching this work, I had to investigate other series about the oddities from other locations, often identified with that geometric shape too.

Although Alaska is many geographic states and a province away, it has a lot more mysterious cryptids roaming about. The series The Alaskan Triangle (available on Discovery+) is comfort food for my imagination as it delves into more, like the attempts to find The Black Pyramid and reveals how this area is home to lots of UAPs and Bigfoot! The fact this filmmaker spent time there to make his duology, Alaskan Coastal Sasquatch, shows just how deeply invested he is in the topic! Star Trek Prodigy Axed. But Season Two Will Beam On Board Somewhere!

Thankfully, fans can get some kind of continuation and closure as the news dropped as post-production has finished for Star Trek Prodigy.

Star Trek Prodigy Streaming on Nickelodeon and Paramount+

Sadly, there won’t be any more Star Trek Prodigy after season two, according to Variety. That also includes removal of the series, which can draw the ire of those faithful. Fortunately, the good news is that it’s nearly done post-production, and is allowed to be broadcast.

In the original article, Joe Otterman wrote, “According to an individual with knowledge of the removals, the decision was data-driven, though Paramount did not share any specific data that highlighted why these shows are being cancelled and removed. It is the latest example, however, of streamers removing content from their platforms. Warner Bros. Discovery led the charge on such removals at Max under the leadership of David Zaslav, while other platforms like Disney+ and Hulu have recently followed suit.”

While Lower Decks remain, even that series my be living on borrowed time.

Fans can blame the new board of directors for taking away what I feel is the best animated entry for the Star Trek franchise. In what’s expected for season two is an answer to what happened to Captain Chakotay and to see Gwyn on a solo outing. A civil war is brewing in her home world, and she wants to stop it. I believe by mid-season’s end of that arc, she’ll reunite with her friends.

Prodigy is creatively a lot more imaginative. Here, non humanoid alien species are everywhere! Because they’re rarely featured on television save for Orville, I’ve often ignored some shows and avidly followed others because of how diverse the gene pool is in a galactic level. In Prodigy, the there’s a lot more variety being presented and I love it.

Also, the misfit formula worked. It’s less like Farscape or Red Dwarf. With Starfleet looking over the crew’s shoulder, so to speak, they have to eventually learn how to conform. Whether showrunners and creators Kevin & Dan Hageman have plans for an eventual finale, all fans can do is hope when Star Trek Prodigy finds a new home and gets a proper finale it deserves.

When Fast X is Streaming, the Race is on to Keep this Franchise Afloat!

Although Mamoa carries Fast X, that’s a lot of responsibility to put on his shoulder.

Fast X Movie Poster - TeaserNow Available to Stream on Prime Video, iTunes, and Vudu

When I saw in the trailers that Jason Momoa is the spotlight in Fast X, I knew he’d have fun with however he’d get cast. As a result, I didn’t rush to go see it in theatres. Instead, I opted to wait for this latest entry to the Fast and Furious franchise to hit streaming services. Although what happens is very formulaic, I’m generally okay with the shift in focus from street-racing to super spy romps that James Bond would never say no to taking on.

And as for whether I’m still invested, I might as well enjoy the ride to the end. The post credits teaser was enough to keep me interested. Although that returning character won’t be part of the main films based on the latest industry reports, that can easily change as the script is still being crafted.

Once You’re in Brooklyn 45, There’s no Escape

Every once in a while, a supernatural gem will present itself in all its post-Depression era glory. Brooklyn 45 explores all the manic problems of the day and then some!

Brooklyn 45 Movie PosterAvailable to stream on Shudder Network

In Brooklyn 45, a movie set after the end of World War II, four lifelong friends’ desire to communicate with the other side is led by one individual (Larry Fessenden) who believed his wife was killed. Perhaps they should’ve been careful in entertaining an old fool.

What they summoned would become the stuff of nightmares, and this frightful whodunit has the makings of a perfect Lovecraftian style of dread. We’re not dealing with cosmic entities here. Instead, it’s in what sordid histories get unearthed and how one deals with the truth! What these friends (played by Anne Ramsay, Ron E. Rains, Jeremy Holm, and Ezra Buzzington) discover about each other that night is certainly a life changer.

Just What are the Gremlins Hiding in Secrets of the Mogwai?

What’s presented in Gremlins Secrets of the Mogwai is more of a coming of age tale where Sam and Gizmo truly get to bond.

Gremlins Secrets of the MogwaiStreaming on HBO Max and broadcasting on Cartoon Network

Fortunately, Gremlins can’t be contained to one network. Following its streaming debut, these critters are making their way to others, and the Secrets of the Mogwai will soon be everywhere! I’m surprised there’s no merchandise tie-in to accompany this release.

This prequel to the films has an intriguing origin story. Although it retcons a few details, the changes are unnecessary. The lore revealed in the second film says it all, and I’d prefer the cuddly raccoon to have a different name than go by what’s presented prior. It seems these creatures live in a Fern Gully type of fantasy world, and if it was possible to bring together various franchises into one metaverse, I’d like to see Fantastic Beasts merge with this IP. That’s because the 1920s were ripe with lots of pulp influences, and to carry that to the fore would be terrific, too.
