Streaming on Nickelodeon and Paramount+
Sadly, there won’t be any more Star Trek Prodigy after season two, according to Variety. That also includes removal of the series, which can draw the ire of those faithful. Fortunately, the good news is that it’s nearly done post-production, and is allowed to be broadcast.
In the original article, Joe Otterman wrote, “According to an individual with knowledge of the removals, the decision was data-driven, though Paramount did not share any specific data that highlighted why these shows are being cancelled and removed. It is the latest example, however, of streamers removing content from their platforms. Warner Bros. Discovery led the charge on such removals at Max under the leadership of David Zaslav, while other platforms like Disney+ and Hulu have recently followed suit.”
While Lower Decks remain, even that series my be living on borrowed time.
Fans can blame the new board of directors for taking away what I feel is the best animated entry for the Star Trek franchise. In what’s expected for season two is an answer to what happened to Captain Chakotay and to see Gwyn on a solo outing. A civil war is brewing in her home world, and she wants to stop it. I believe by mid-season’s end of that arc, she’ll reunite with her friends.
Prodigy is creatively a lot more imaginative. Here, non humanoid alien species are everywhere! Because they’re rarely featured on television save for Orville, I’ve often ignored some shows and avidly followed others because of how diverse the gene pool is in a galactic level. In Prodigy, the there’s a lot more variety being presented and I love it.
Also, the misfit formula worked. It’s less like Farscape or Red Dwarf. With Starfleet looking over the crew’s shoulder, so to speak, they have to eventually learn how to conform. Whether showrunners and creators Kevin & Dan Hageman have plans for an eventual finale, all fans can do is hope when Star Trek Prodigy finds a new home and gets a proper finale it deserves.
