Halloween’s nearly here and quite often, there’s something to fear because not all forms of entertainment are tailored for young tykes to enjoy. Knowledge Kids has fixed that with a specially curated run of fun that’s no doubt going to be educational too.

Halloween’s nearly here and quite often, there’s something to fear because not all forms of entertainment are tailored for young ones to enjoy. Knowledge Kids has fixed that with a specially curated run of fun that’s no doubt going to be educational too.

Some select shows worth noting are Molang: “The Ghosts’ Castle, Haunted House, and The Pumpkin”; Kate & Mim-Mim: Lil’ Boo and Kiva Can Do! (Can Boo), two Dragon episodes (not from the How to Train your Dragon series) and with The Monster Halloween. Furry-mania took over this list with Clifford the Big Red Dog and Paw Patrol. There’s more than a handful of episodes that’s tailored for the each. Of the former, there’s “The Halloween Costume Crisis” and “Clifford’s Howl-O-ween.” Of the latter, there’s “Pups and the Ghost Pirate,” “Save the Trick” and “Treaters and The Werepuppy.”

Apple TV Plus is All A “Blush”

The super deformed style character design in Jim Mateo’s Blush is very adorable, and it us a sense that there’s a life for the two kids we meet in this short film.

Joe Mateo’s computer animated short film, Blush, is definitely his most personal to date. After working on high-profile movies like Meet the Robinsons and Big Hero 6 in varying capacities, to see him direct is a win. In the former, he wrote the story about a boy getting a glimpse of the future, but is facing abandonment issues (he was left at an orphanage), and the latter, about a teen who loses his big brother and fears he has no one close to be with ever again.

The theme of loss is common for this storyteller, and he ups it another notch by exploring what it’s like to lose hope when a spaceship crashes on a desolate dry planet, and there’s no way to call for help. He’s somewhere in the boon dogs of space, and the small planetoid he lands on is bereft of life.

The Pacific Cinewaves Program at the LA Asian Pacific Film Festival is my go to for kick starting this event. It’s free / pay what you can, because there’s no reason not to miss all the messages being delivered about how to preserve the ancient world of Polynesia. 

The various pieces offer a delightful, supernatural and meditative exploration on what makes this part of the world unique. I say this with mixed feelings, because not all the countries in this vast region are represented. We have Guam, and a beautifully family oriented tale about how to reconnect with one’s faith in How to Catch a Taotaomona.

The NFB at Ottawa International Animation Fest!

This event will be offering a streaming/digital component alongside its in-person screenings, and the best part of it all is that it’s not geo-locked!

National Film Board of CanadaA few animated favourites from the National Film Board of Canada are making its way to the Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF)! There’s something old and something new in what’s coming. Five animated shorts—including the world premiere of a Poland/Canada co-production from an acclaimed animation trilogy–will be gracing the screen far and wide. This event will be offering a streaming/digital component alongside its in-person screenings, and the best part of it all is that it’s not geo-locked!

Also, this show is running longer than usual. It’ll take place from September 22 to October 3.

TheNFB on National Indigenous Peoples Day

In recognition of National Indigenous Peoples Day (June 21), Kevin Settee’s four-part series of short films, The Lake Winnipeg Project, is premiering online at Indigenous Cinema, the NFB’s rich online collection of Indigenous-made films. Lake Winnipeg’s shores are home to many vibrant Indigenous communities, including the Anishinaabe, Cree and Métis.

The Lake Winnipeg Project is an Indigenous-led community-engagement project that explores the communities’ deep connection to the land and water at a time when many external forces are imposing change.

The Indigenous Cinema page offers free streaming of more than 400 new and classic titles from the NFB’s collection of films by Indigenous directors.

Four works and co-productions from the National Film Board of Canada (TheNFB) are set to play at Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2021! This event in France takes place June 14 to 19, and as for how much of it will be available world-wide still needs to be announced. The pandemic is considered on-going and travel restrictions aren’t likely to lighten up until the end of the year.

Half the works entered into the Short Film competition are available online, and the rest are offered after the event to show what these creators have been up to while stuck at home. These talents have been productive amid the current global health situation, and we have the spotlight on:
