Trolls: World Tour is Loud and Live on VOD!

After a rousing success with the first Trolls film, the sort of couple Poppy (Anna Kendrick) and Branch (Justin Timberlake) are going on a world tour! That’s quite the date for the second outing of these happy-go-lucky music loving critters who never had a huge back story before DreamWorks Animation acquired the license. With a franchise more than 60 years old and not having consistency in the few animated takes last century, it at least sowed the seeds to what this animation studio would further.

All the puff haired critters want to do is have fun. When Poppy learns others of her kind are living elsewhere, she believes it’s time to meet and perhaps also unite the different tribes. The irony is that her nemesis, Queen Barb (Rachel Bloom), also has the same idea of uniting them to one sound–the world of hard rock. Her once and former king dad doesn’t disagree and has since retired from the throne. To hear Ozzy Osbourne as the the voice is perfect.

[Victoria, BC] It’s Tough to Contain Starry Starry Skies Musical, Little Bird

The punk rock movement has not yet begun; as I recall, it owes a debt to the sounds being formed here in Starry Starry Skies’ Little Bird.

When Starry Starry Skies‘ Little Bird leaves the nest, just what can our intrepid Robin Foster (Abby Corpus) do? She had an idyllic life in the farm state of Iowa, but she yearns for more. Her parents have her life fairly well charted, in hopes she’ll follow in their footsteps, but her life is defined by the music she loves. This country girl has a lot of rock-and-roll in her blood, and she decides to run away.

When It’s Not Two Frozen for Arendelle’s Future

Mild Spoiler Alert

“Show Yourself” may not be the definitive musical number to inspire in Frozen 2. Unlike the first film with its spectacular set pieces, this sequel tries too hard to offer refreshing ideas. It’s tough to outdo “Let it Go” because of its many meanings. This sequel at least delivers a story which answers a few questions, has a cultural sub-context which will definitely be of debate for years to come, and looks at how this kingdom continues to survive.

The expected economic examination is ignored. Instead, we find Elsa (Idina Menzel) acting a little off lately. In the side-lines, Kristoff (Jonathan Groff) is trying to figure out the perfect moment to propose to Anna (Kristen Bell). As the trailers have shown, the Queen of Arendelle must heed the siren’s call.

Not every television show from the 90s (or present) can pull off a musical without imitating another. Often, it explores the innermost problems of the protagonist(s) while the antagonist acts as a supernatural force to ‘assist.’ Joss Whedon‘s “Once More With Feeling” in Buffy the Vampire Slayer set a precedent for future producers to consider. Xena: Warrior Princess is very notable. From the past 10 years, The CW’s Supernatural saw the Winchester brothers happening on a stage show version of themselves. In The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow, they had to sing as it helped them reveal hidden feelings to loved ones. ​Starry Starry Skies Productions‘ Buffie the Vampyre Slayer Parody stays true to theme and also showcases the wonderful singing talents from the Capital region.

Where’s Pippin? Oh, at SMUS’ 20th Anniversary at Victoria Fringe Festival

No year of attending the Victoria Fringe Theatre Festival can be complete without a show from St Michaels University School as they put on a high school level production of an award winning Broadway play. This year is notable as the summer program which teaches theatre celebrate 20 years and returns to Pippin. This musical was their very first.

In all the years I’ve been covering this event, I feel it’s worth the trip away from the event core (downtown Victoria) to check out. Fans of Broadway shows will not be disappointed. To note: the cast rotates, so each student gets to play two different roles.

[VFF2019] Beware of What 13 Dead Dreams may Come!

13 Dead Dreams of “Eugene” could not be any more timely. Hot on the heels of the cinematic adaptation of Scary Tales to Tell in the Dark, Fringe theatre goers can have the thrill of experiencing a shadow play and trying to solve a mystery in the grand tradition of Alfred Hitchcock‘s best whodunits (the poster design is heavily inspired from Vertigo) and Man Ray‘s surrealist works. Technical spoiler alert: most of the projections are common objects that show creators Erika Kate MacDonald and Paul Strickland found in the kitchen. This duo offers a song and dance in between separate narratives such as “Water Under the Bridge” and “Mummy of Sabina, Ohio.”
