Emerald City Comic Con

When Emerald City Comicon (ECCC) announced the addition of an extra day, I half expected the management would include some mainstream material for nerds to enjoy. What I heard instead was, “Why are the Seahawks important to such a comic-driven show?” A lot of people before the event said that and instead of the usual Friday to Sunday routine, I thought I’d look at what I could find to do at such an early start. It was mostly getting the key bits of shopping of items that I really wanted done and spend the rest of the days walking around and weighing in on if I really wanted that Jiji the cat music box from Kiki’s Delivery Service ar Kinokuniya’s table.

Thurs was not light on the people traffic at all. The venue was probably at two-thirds capacity for those who decided to visit that day. There was nothing of interest in the autograph / photo-ops floor except for those Seattle Seahawks fans wanting to meet Richard Sherman and Bobby Wagner. I suspect they are nerds too and there was some interest. But as for how much, the majority has spoken online and at the show. I was keeping my ears tuned into what people were saying

ReedPOP, the parent organization, hosting the show had at the last minute offer a raffle to sell off their remaining Thurs tickets by asking if Jim Lee could attend this day and the lucky few spent time talking to him and getting their comics autographed. The marketing neglected to say that this contest was for USA residents only. Not everyone reads the terms of an agreement in any contest, and I did. Was I disappointed? No.

Two of the Funniest Photos from Emerald City Comicon!

I don’t normally share photos unless I think there will be a great interest in them. But these two photos are the exception, one of the photos is to provide context while the other two are just laugh out loud funny. Right now the annual Emerald City Comicon (ECCC) is being held at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle, from April 7-10. As described on the ECCC history page:

Emerald City Comicon is the premier comic book and pop culture convention in the Northwest, taking place in beautiful downtown Seattle, Washington.

In 2015, Emerald City Comicon soared to 80,000 people over three days and featured hundreds of comic book guests, celebrity guests and more!

Emerald City Comicon is another killer event by ReedPOP. ReedPOP also runs New York Comic Con, C2E2, PAX Prime, PAX East, Star Wars Celebration, Special Edition: NYC, BookCon, Oz Comic-Con and many more. For more info on ReedPOP, be sure to check out ReedPOP.com.

ECCC Brings Farscape’s Chiana to Northwest’s Emerald Capital

Gigi Edgley Publicity StillYou don’t have to be a mind reader to know many of Emerald City Comicon’s (ECCC) guests are strategic — many con guests have something to push or promote. A good guest is a busy guest. But the question one has is why is Gigi Edgley here? Edgley played the role of the Nebari Chiana in what is considered one of the greatest science fiction television series of all time, Farscape. The series’ father of creation Rockne S. O’Bannon (Defiance, CW’s Cult) announced in 2014 that a film version of the former SyFy produced series was in development. Where it is now is still in very early stages. One can only hope that Edgley will be here to promote the Farscape film but like any actress in-demand, she has other projects on the go.

Packing Two Weekend Fandom Conventions into a Four Day Nerdtacular

Changes are in store for both Emerald City Comicon (ECCC) and Fan Expo Vancouver (FEV), two of the Pacific Northwest’s biggest pop culture conventions. They are now respectively owned by ReedPOP and Informa Canada. While Hobby Star Marketing still manages the Fan Expo brand, they now report to a larger company that operates out of 43 countries that deal with a variety of exhibits than just focussing on geekdom whereas ReedPOP is more about the popular culture scene.

In what I’ve experienced from both of this year’s shows, a few of these modifications are not all that visible. Some include courier expressing show passes to fans so they have them in time for the show (ECCC) and others mean hiring additional security / staff for traffic control (FEV). The check-in of fake weapons is another and these are honestly needed for the safety for everyone. These changes are perhaps the most noticeable for this year’s two shows. As for what will happen in 2016, fine-tuning is required to manage the crazy lineups I saw when big name stars appear on the show floor.

The Vintage Tempest’s Emerald City Comic Con Journal 2015 & Ch-ch-changes!

Changes are in store for Emerald City Comic Con now that it is under new ownership. Some of it is noticeable at the 2015 event and based on what I have experienced, I think what’s planned will be good. For one thing, instead of three days of the show, there will be four. That might alleviate some of the congestion as not many people will attempt to cram as much into a day.

And maybe for next year’s show, some events can be spread out better or there will be the return of some fond favourites. The Star Wars reading by Twisted Toonz was missing this year. In previous shows, it was re-enacted by the voice talent that comes to this Seattle-based show. This year would have been killer with the fact that Patrick Warburton, the voice of the Tick and the television version of Buzz Lightyear, was in the house! Include Janet Varney, the lead character in Avatar: Legend of Korra, Steve Blum (voice of Starscream in Transformers Prime), Veronica Taylor (Ash from Pokemon) and Tabitha St. Germain (My Little Pony), and the possibilities would have been stellar!

Keeping Up with Emerald City Comicon’s Last Minute Changes and Adds

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)
Updated 9:00 PM PST to reflect the latest announcement

Unless convention goers to Seattle‘s largest pop culture convention are online every day for the latest news, the last few weeks have been a flurry of cancellations and tweaks to a schedule of which media guests are indeed attending and at what days they are able to appear. The fine print is written on ECCC’s website for some time: work commitments come first.

Unlike the Toronto Comic Convention where they did everything in their power to bring Karen Gillan in to be with her fans with the fastest manmade jet to bring her to this show, the powers that be at the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) brought news that only the observant will notice: another episode of Doctor Who is going into production and Jenna Coleman revealed on her Twitter feed that she is back at work. Unless there is a working TARDIS and a Time Lord willing to change destiny, the inevitable had to happen: a couple of hours later, ECCC confirmed that she will no longer be attending the convention. Although the news is sad, the convention committee pulled off some magic and has brought Alex Kingston, the Doctor’s “real” wife, to the fore!
