Disney Plus is available across most major markets. As a huge fan of their original creations–namely Gargoyles, Lilo and Stitch, and Ducktales–to watch a random episode through the cloud instead of pulling a DVD out is terrific. I have choices. However, two weeks after its launch, I still have yet to subscribe since I’m in no rush. The big issue is with the fact that there’s only a handful of original works offered and I own physical copies of most of the titles since becoming a member of the Disney Movie Club.

Plus, not all of their made-for-television catalogue is fully available. I’m sure this will change over time as we now have a dedicated website to report on the latest adds.

Disney’s Gargoyles are on the Loose!

28 Jan

By Edmund Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

Fans of Disney’s Gargoyles do not have to go through the Disney Movie Club (DMC) to order the highly desired Season Two Volume Two release. It was once an exclusive through this mail order catalogue house and the months that followed after my editorial has shown that the Mouse does care. A tip from a reader to say that they have made buying this release easier and further monitoring of where this video collection can be found shows that the stone protectors of the night are indeed loose! This volume can now be ordered through Amazon.

Halloween Treats: Getting Nostalgic with the Adventures of Ichabod & Mr. Toad

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

On the eve of Halloween night, young children should not be denied some early treats. Disney’s DVD release of The Adventures of Ichabod & Mr. Toad (Disney Gold Classic Collection)ir?t=wiupgeatthmo 20&l=as2&o=1&a=B00004R99Y is a must own for any paranormal enthusiast or classic Disney fan. This collection contain three wonderful shorts — The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, the Wind in the Willows and Lonesome Ghosts. The latter is worth noting because it was an influential classic which shaped this author’s life path to investigating ghosts for real. There were The Three Investigators and Scooby-Doo too, but the combination of these products certainly was a game changer.

Disney’s Gargoyles Season Two Volume Two is Hot! BUT….

30 Jun

Gargoyles DVD CoverBy Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

Some fans of Disney’s Gargoyles can rejoice and others will lament. Disney Movie Club is offering to their members the ability to purchase the much desired volume two release of season two. But only residents of the United States can purchase this three-disc set at $19.99 USD. The program is similar to Columbia House’s Music Club from a previous era, so let the consumer beware—more items must be purchased to fulfill this contract. While no date has been set for The Goliath Chronicles (Season Three), that may well take just as long, depending on how well sales go.

But if this company is going to limit the accessibility to this current video release by making this set an exclusive, they are only putting the proverbial nail in the coffin. Much like the cartoon about a clan of gargoyles seeking freedom and desiring to find a place to belong, this title is being tightly reigned. Some viewers might see this fine cartoon as an inspired epic in the same vein as many of Shakespeare’s historical and fantastical plays with a touch of Braveheart mixed in.

Show creator Greg Weisman reported back in 2006 that the video release for season two-volume two was cancelled due to lack sufficient sales of volume one. The initial season was short, but it helped establish the mythos that is of this world, where Oberon is the king of a third race–the faerie kind–and the Gargoyles are like Veritas, believers of truth and warriors of justice. The humans, well, they are hard to understand, much less trust.
