Meditating on Zao Dao’s Cuisine Chinoise

Available to Purchase on Amazon USACuisine Chinoise: Five Tales of Food and Life Zao Dao\'s Cuising Chinoise
Dark Horse Comics

Food, Fantasy and Fusion gets fantastically mixed up in Zao Dao’s Cuisine Chinoise. Two worlds collide in this graphic novel, which is not always a fable, but perhaps a farce to laugh at. It’s tough to say exactly what genre this collection of illustrated works fits into.

This artist uses the avant-garde–mixing traditional brush art with modern styles (and also using digital)–to give life to the supernatural narratives at hand. The watercolours can be transparent or heavy. Her visuals and use of textures are zen-like, and the narrative can just as equally reveal a state of mind of not only her creative consciousness but also of the characters she creates. One of them is Yuzi, a white-haired cook of an unusual caliber that few gourmet eaters can appreciate.

When the undead meet him, he’s a five Michelin star chef.

Parallax or The Duality of the Mind

Parallax Movie PosterBy Ed Sum
(The Vintage Tempest)

Opens July 10, 2020
Limited Release

* Spoiler Alert

There’s more than a simple existential crisis going on in Parallax. This film title is very telling because by definition, the term is about how an object can appear displaced relative to the observer when he or she even moves a few feet. In computer graphic design, it can create an illusion of depth. With this movie, it’s about reality bending in strange ways where Naomi (Naomi Prentice) feels out-of-place relative to the world moving on without her.

This lightly budgeted thriller shows it’s supernatural colours later. The visual composition is also telling, since it’s playing with the viewer’s understanding of what the word, parallax, means.

As an artist, Naomi says her paintings are like portals to other worlds. One touch, and she feels whisked away to that beach. In reality, she could be simply dreaming it…

Ahoy Comics Shows Ash & Thorn vs Old Age

Ash and Thorn by Ahoy ComicsRelease Date:
July 8, 2020

Ahoy Comics

Two old ladies versus the apocalypse–what can go wrong? Very little if you’re like Lotte Thorn in the comic book, Ash and Thorn by Mariah McCourt. She’s crafted a unique type of master and apprentice narrative which sees this elderly warrior mage take on the undead! Her trainer is Lady Peruvia Ashlington-Voss. As the title suggests, these characters can be rather prickly.

The fact our heroine is recruited much later in life to deal with a supernatural threat says something. You’re never too old to save the world!
