The Future & “The Progeny” Are Everywhere In DC’s Legends of Tomorrow

Legends of TomorrowSpoiler Alert

What I like to know in last week’s DC’s Legends of Tomorrow “Progeny” is what happened to Kendra and Carter’s son? Saunders is having flashbacks to a time when both she and Carter are very happy together. Their love blossomed over the successive reincarnations, and they have to stay one step ahead of Vandal Savage otherwise all they have built can get ripped away. Perhaps with the fact they have a child, to keep running is all they can do. As any superhero story can tell you, to let your enemy know you have loved ones only means trouble. In what’s revealed from the flashback foreshadow  what’s to come in the present. Hopefully, more of what Kendra is starting to remember will reveal what the child they raised has become and what befell them in the 1930’s.

This episode, however, is set in the 2100’s. The story nicely explores a timeless debate: if given the opportunity to kill the child who would later be Hitler, would you? The main plot looks at the team arriving to change a pivotal point in history when Savage is mentoring the young Per Degaton to become the next despot. The casting for this lad is spot-on. There’s a cold heart being nurtured in Cory Grüter-Andrew’s performance and I can’t help but wonder how much crueller he will become as time passes by. Although revealed by Rip that he pales in comparison to Savage, just how nasty the series villain can be has yet to be revealed. The problem with messing with the timeline is sometimes the events that lead to the downfall of human civilization can get advanced. Hunter is not the type to say oops.

Bringing Japan’s Ambrosia to Earth; Nakano’s Shuzo Ichigo No Osake

Nakano’s Shuzo Ichigo No Osake is created using the natural waters flowing from Fujishiro Mountain Range and every time I sample this strawberry-infused delight, I’m floating on air!

Nakano Strawberry Sake out of production SMALLSake lovers already know not all brands are alike. Everything comes from the purity of the water, type of rice used and how it’s brewed. But when it comes to additives, what can be added to transform this drink to become a holy nectar of the gods? Nakano’s Shuzo Ichigo No Osake is created using the natural waters flowing from Fujishiro Mountain Range and every time I sample this strawberry-infused delight, I’m floating on air!

I discovered this delight when in Vancouver many months ago. As I drifted by Gyoza Bar, the harmonies I heard from within drew me inside and as I sat down, I eyed the drink menu over the food instead.

Being “Left Behind” is not Easy in DC’s Legends of Tomorrow

vlcsnap-2016-04-01-15h50m02s800

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

* Spoiler Alert

You have to love Ray’s optimism and technical genius in “Left Behind.” He believes DC’s Legends of Tomorrow will return to pick him, Kendra and Sara up after the time ship seemingly took off. They had no idea in what happened (inside, there was a fight going on). His tenacity for keeping hope alive is what makes him charming. But he does not know when rescue will happen and, in the meantime, he uses ancient technology (by his standards) to build a beacon for that day to come. I’m wondering if he needed vacuum tubes since they were the precursor to memory chips.

Chronos sabotaged the Waverider and the amount of damage incurred can leave this ship lost in space and time forever. Rip, Stein and Jackson are in for a wild ride until Gideon’s self-repair mechanisms can reverse the damage and until they can stop to think, nobody immediately wonders why Chronos took Snart. The reason is obvious although it does not jive with his earlier efforts where he’s after Rip more. I still think there is more than one. This Rory version of the bounty hunter did say he’s been remade more than a few times, so perhaps the versions bouncing about include a past and future version with different memories.

Sci-Fi Double Feature Does Not Always Mean Rocky Horror!

There are so many allusions Sci-Fi Double Feature makes and that makes this travelling sideshow worth checking out.

Sci-Fi Double Feature Promotional PosterES: Out in the wilds of the Yukon, there are many mysteries afoot. Most of the land is wild, fertile, and uninhabited? Perhaps not. Ramshackle Theatre is born from this unbridled territory to give children’s entertainment an interesting look in front of and behind the scenes of a camera. At a show hosted by Intrepid Theatre, James and I were treated to a wonderful shadow puppet display that brings a touch of surrealism to the masses.

They will be performing their next show on April 2, 2016, at the Mermaid Imperial Theatre Performing Arts Centre in Windsor, Nova Scotia. Maybe it’s time to book a trip!

JS: Yes, book, book now! This is a very solid family sci-fi production with a nostalgic feel. If you had people from the National Film Board of Canada, Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet, Bruce McCulloch and the creators of The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show in a stuck elevator, this is the show they would create to fight boredom.

The Setup for Batman v Superman and Beyond, A Review and Commentary

This planet has a tough time of avoiding pending apocalypses in Batman v Superman.

Batman v Superman Movie PosterSpoiler Alert!

The DC Cinematic Snyderverse (officially known as DC Expanded Universe) is very dark and grim. This director’s vision for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice spells out what’s to come, and in what these heroes—Batman (Ben Affleck), Superman (Henry Cavill) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot)—are facing is a look in the mirror darkly over what tyranny can look if the heroes are not put into check. That is, can they be allowed to do anything they want because they are super powered? One tease can be found in the trailer for this film, where soldiers are bowing down to the boy in blue and he looks quite angry.

Just how this scene fits in requires watching this movie. Bruce Wayne aka Batman has much to fear about this Kryptonian after the events from Zack Snyder’s last movie, Man of Steel (movie review). He criticizes Clark Kent about all the fluff pieces The Daily Planet published showing the good he is doing. However, Wayne sees the world differently. He lost his parents to a random crime and he saw one of his office buildings get annihilated during the fight between Supes and General Zod. The grudge he holds may never go away.

Christian A Brown is a fantasy author who understands how modern fiction works. Unless it evolves with the times, the work can look dated. To keep his own material refreshing, he’s not afraid to buck trends. His first novel, Feast of Fates, appeared on shelves in late 2014 and received a devoted legion of fans. The central character Morigan may well allude to the Morrigan of Irish Lore. Nestled in reference her importance in the tale is definitely the Three Fates. Brown calls them the Sisters Three — Eean, Elemech and Ealasyd — in his world, just what kind of ongoing role they play requires looking at the third book, Feast of Chaos, tentatively scheduled July release.

The fourth volume, Feast of Mercy, is in the works. This world Brown created is filled with an exploration into aboriginal culture and coloured with nods to mythological lore. Readers will find his exploration into gender equality interesting.

“One of the reasons why people have taken to my work is because you don’t see that a lot in fantasy especially, which is very trope-ridden,” said Brown.
