By James Robert Shaw (The Wind up Geek)

If you haven’t seen the music video of Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars you’ve already heard it on the radio. The 2014 released single was such a success that it became only the ninth video to hit over a billion views on YouTube.

The Gods of Egypt Go to War, A Trailer Analysis

We tear apart the movie trailer for the upcoming Lionsgate release, Gods of Egypt.

imagesLionsate Entertainment unveiled a trailer for the upcoming movie, Gods of Egypt, and purists of what this pantheon represents will be upset. They can go on an uproar Feb 26, 2016.

Until then and based on the images shown, this movie is nothing more than a mash-up of the movie Stargate (which has better armour designs) and the video game God of War (perhaps with a bit of Tomb Raider mixed in). There are bits of mythology tossed into the narrative — the plot revolves around the ongoing feud between Horus (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and Seth (Gerard Butler). The trailer shows Horus losing his eye and Bek a thief (Brenton Thwaites) goes to retrieve it. As for how much more the movie’s plot remains faithful to that legend, when Horus regains his eye and presents it to his father, Osiris, to symbolize the sacrifice he did to regaining power, that remains to be seen.

Nearly every deity — Hathor, Thoth and Ra — are revealed this film. The only exceptions are Osiris and Isis. Egyptologists versed in the Osiris Myth will wonder just how much of that tale will make up the basis of this movie.

A Look at Sandman and the Lost Sand of Dreams. A DVD Review

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

910gsOx1UrL._SY445_I’ve always been fascinated with discovering what dreams are made of and there’s plenty of library material to look at for self-study or to be entertained by. On this special list is the stop motion animated epic, Sandman and the Lost Sand of Dreams (Das Sandmännchen: Abenteuer im Traumland).

It’s a wonderful film because of the positive messages it imparts to younger audiences and for myself, the world it presents is comparable to other dream tales I enjoyed prior. The fantastic that’s evoked in H.P. Lovecraft‘s haunting world of the Dreamlands, the endlessness of the beauty found in Robin WilliamsWhat Dreams May Come and the innocence of youth that Nemo represented in his Adventures In Slumberland are recalled in this German-made film originally released in 2010. Shout! Factory Kids released this English dubbed piece last month and my order did not arrive till recently for me to watch. There’s no bonus material with this release.

Revealing More than One of The Last Witch Hunter’s RPG Roots, a Review

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

The_Last_Witch_Hunter_posterIf Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) can include centuries spanning narratives that leads to modern-day, then The Last Witch Hunter is an ideal way to introduce the concept. Vin Diesel plays Kaulder, a role-playing character turned into a cinematic one, out to destroy all witches. This ranger-class warrior hunts them down because he believes most of them are inherently evil. In the film, they were once led by a queen bent on destroying all of humanity. When she was defeated long ago, she cursed Kaulder to eternal life and he’s fated to roam the earth like a Wandering Jew.

[Victoria, BC] Tide Lines Sweeps Back into Victoria Nov 17th!

Fortunately, Tide Lines does not condemn. It shows what this team of sailors who love surfing are doing to educate the people they meet about this problem.

Tide Lines PosterTide Lines is more than just a documentary about two brothers and a friend setting sail from Vancouver Island to the Polynesian Islands to south of Africa to the Panama and home. It may have started out as a project to look at their journey, complete with a mini-biography about Ryan and Bryson Robertson and Hugh Patterson, but during the making of this film, it evolved to become another type of movie. The three-year journey these individuals undertook showed how they are discovering how different cultures are currently reacting to a global problem: what are the denizens of this planet doing to clean up the beaches that’s littered with trash? Scattered around them and floating within Earth’s many oceans are plastic debris of all sorts, bottles and all kinds of junk. Not everyone knows about the Great Pacific or North Atlantic Garbage Patch that’s just only growing beneath the waters of the five major oceanic gyres.

Anglicon 2016 is Getting Sontar-ized with Dan Starkey!

Dan StarkeyThe Sontaran Invasion fleet is coming to the Pacific Northwest next year, and its ambassador will be addressing the masses at Anglicon 2016! Well, that’s if Strax was still with the order. The actor behind the irrepressible character, Dan Starkey will be appearing instead; he will entertain fans with stories from behind the set, and perhaps reveal what’s next for the Paternoster Gang in the series. They defined one part of what made Matt Smith’s run in the Doctor Who series great.
