Library of Congress: 70% of Silent Films Lost

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

The report by Variety and author Paul Harris certainly brings tears to my eyes as I love classic films, especially the early films by Walt Disney and Georges Méliès. As I grew to love the products from the era, I found a deep appreciation for the films out of Germany, namely The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Metropolis. While some of the best products from what I love from this era have survived to be appreciated by audiences today, there is a whole lot more that, from the sound of this article, is gone for good. I have to wonder what early animation experiments were made back then that is perhaps gone.

The news that not many silent films in their original film stock have survived to this day is not altogether surprising, but the fact that many products from other artists during this time exist anymore is all the more sad. In what this article suggests, hopefully the proposal to repatriation any film deemed “lost” can be found buried at some foreign film archive in Russia or wherever they may be located.

Every cloud has a silver lining, and hopefully, in this case, it means more than just the chemical used to make the film stock. I am hoping it means a concentrated effort in creating a call to arms to search the world’s film vaults for lost treasures (in whatever film format that they are kept in) so that it can get projected to a silver screen just one more time … or by some process to digitize the movie for preservation.

D23 News: Big Hero 6 Director Announced

More news from D23 at the Anaheim Convention Center this weekend. This time it’s an update to Marvel’s upcoming animated film Big Hero 6. It was announced that Don Hall was hired to direct the film. Don Hall’s previous credits as writer and/or director involves such well-known film titles as Winnie the Pooh (2011), Meet the Robinsons (2007) and The Emporer’s New Groove (2000).

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Big Hero 6, I offer a quick film synopsis as provided by Walt Disney Pictures:

Brilliant robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada finds himself in the grips of a criminal plot that threatens to destroy the fast-paced, high-tech city of San Fransokyo. With the help of his closest companion, a robot named Baymax, Hiro joins forces with a reluctant team of first-time crime fighters on a mission to save their city.

Big Hero 6 is scheduled for release in theatres on November 7, 2014.

D23 News: Tom Hiddleston the Disney Lounge Singer

This one is mostly for you ladies out there. I know what you think of Tom Hiddleston, the actor who’ll be portraying Loki in the upcoming Thor: The Dark World and the Avengers sequel. You love his looks and you love his acting (okay, I’m with you on this one) but will you love his singing?

At Disney’s D23 held at the Anaheim Convention Center, Tom was just one of the celebrities to make an appearance in front of thousands of fans. Perhaps he made the female geeks swoon with his good looks but were they swooning to his singing. If not they were at least swinging along as Tom snapped his fingers while giving his rendition of the tune “Bear Necessities” from Disney’s The Jungle Book. Jack Benny Show alumni Phil Harris originally breathed life into the 1967 song as the voice of ‘Baloo’ the Bear.

Now tell me ladies, which version do you prefer?

D23 To Tease Fans with Star Wars

It’s been talked about for some time now but Disney is closer to a Star Wars Land and fans can see what the Disney Imagineers have waiting for them August 9 – 11 at the Anaheim Convention Center.

As the Disney Imagineers celebrate 60 years it’ll be the fans who benefit. Dave Fisher, show producer of the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Pavilion, says, “There will be teasers for new attractions based on Avatar and Star Wars that we’re working on now for the Disney Parks.”

But where oh where will Star Wars Land go? How about the Disney Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Florida. According to Robert Niles at Theme Park Insider, he says, “From what I’ve heard, it appears that the expansion would take out the area between Star Tours and the auto stunt show stadium, including the Muppet theater and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids play area.”

With Cars Land also in future development that would see completion of both attractions in 2018.
