[Victoria, BC] Rocky Horror Show Builds Creativity in a Benefit Performance

hile toast and water will not be allowed at the theatre, audience members can expect lots of other surprises to help make their Rocky Horror Show experience that much more thrilling.

Poster-Web-662x1024Janet, Dr. Scott, Brad and Rocky will soon grace the stage of the McPherson Theatre in Victoria, BC, Canada with Kaleidoscope Theatre’s production of the Rocky Horror Show. They hold a benefit every year that unites the community and professional actors together, and the proceeds from the show helps the theatre school build programs for young minds to engage in and socially develop.

This 17th annual event will have three performances: one on Halloween night (8pm) and two the next day (7pm and 10pm). The party will be lively, exciting and loud—it will also be a different interpretation of what creator Richard O’Brian presented.

“The show is sometimes playing homage to the original and we’re not copying other productions,” said Pat Rundell, marketing director and one of the stars (he plays Brad Majors), “It will be brand new vision with new characters and costumes, a totally re-imagined Rocky.”

[Victoria, BC] Curious Comics Fall 2013 Plans

At the back of the new Curious Comics store is a large table where players can book a slot to play their games.

Curious ComicsNerd row has gotten a whole lot more geekier with Curious Comics set to change its stock in its new storefront, formerly Curious! Two, to all things board and role playing games related.

Unlike their neighbouring store, Yellowjacket, where it places particular emphasis on Magic the Gathering, Curious Comics’ new gaming store will stand out by leaning more on hosting an open space where gamers and come in to play the latest in RPG games and miniature battles. Pokémon and Yu-gi-Oh seems to be well in hand at Skyhaven Games, and Warhammer with Games Workshop, but gamers crave more. Other systems exist like Reaper Miniature’s own Warlord system, but sometimes they get missed because of the lack of marketing involved to get them as well known.

Retro video gamers will be a go-go for Fan Favourites, a new video games and movie store located in Millie’s Lane in Victoria. That’s an alleyway located beside the Odeon Theatre, where a “second nerd row” may well be developing in this garden city. This store is tucked between Chef’s Quest, a D&D themed diner, and Dragon Impact, a Martial Art Equipment & Supply store.

[Victoria Fringe Festival ’13] Looking Beyond Judgement Day and its Pop Culture Connections

Judgement Day PosterBy Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

Over in the beautiful garden city if Victoria, B.C. Canada, the Victoria Fringe Festival returns for its 27th year with a few much-needed updates and, perhaps, an added regular venue. The voting system is changed so its more fair and the Maritime Museum provided the space for a unique play, “Judgement Day,” that kicked off the first week of the festivities. It will also be part of the last weekend too as the votes are being tallied for best of Fringe.

This gently philosophical and satirical look at how socially irreverent various world religions are gets center stage in the courtroom where real trials took place.

And the storm of controversy of which belief is right in granting a peaceful afterlife gets elegantly played up for laughs by New Blood Theatre, a group that may well be ‘new’ to the Victoria scene. They had done a previous production “Greg Phillips: Alleged Antichrist” in collaboration with the Student Alternative Theatre Company at the University of Victoria, and this new show marks their first production that will hopefully tour to other Fringe festivals around the world.

We Hunger for More Used Video Games!

In Victoria, BC, we have a new fixture to buy used video games and movies!

comingsoonEd and I were on our way to see The World’s End when we spotted this “coming soon” sign for a movie and video game shop. I’m hoping for more indie video game outlets in this town. We have one such place up on Burnside by Harriet Rd. but it would be nice to have a shop closer to the downtown core. The last shop I can recall was Doug’s TV on Cook St. near Cook Street Village.

This shop is located in Millie’s Lane off of Yate Street just around the corner from the Cineplex Odeon and Sushi Plus.

I’ve been unable to find any information for this new business but I’ll keep trying and Victoria locals will be updated in future.

Thanks to an email from the owners, we have been informed that Fan Favourites Games & Movies is now open. They began operation September 1st and their official hours are: Mon – Sat: 10am – 6pm and Sun: 12pm – 5pm. According to their official Facebook page, they specialize in used video games, consoles and movies of all shapes and sizes. Unlike a the big box operations where they undervalue a product, this place offers fair trade-in or cash for your used goods.

I’m definitely going to stop by during their opening week to check them out! Victoria, B.C. needs more stores like in what this store offers. Who knows, but maybe I’ll find a used 1st gen PS3 so I can finally finish playing the Wild Arms series. My PS2 is showing signs of wear, and it’d be sad to see that system go.

Hopefully the owners of this business do not mind me using their Facebook image post so people can see what’s offered inside. Yes, I’m eyeing that Kirby for my collection!

[Victoria, BC] Curious Comics Expands for the Summer

Curious ComicsJust when the days of light reading can’t be found, Curious Comics Books & Games in Victoria, BC has a Summer clearance store, aptly named Curious! Too, of all things pop culture to keep everyone sated. Well, that’s until the next Marvel Entertainment movie comes along … in the form of The Wolverine, due in theatres July 26th. There’s also the lesser known R.I.P.D. (Rest in Peace Department), based on a Dark Horse Comics property about a recently slain cop who joins a police department with an undead division. Could the latter be the next Men in Black? Who knows, but readers can find out with old comic books being offered at discount prices; plenty of 3 for $1 deals will be found. Graphic novels will be sold at 50% off cover.

But for the people interested in expressing their inner geek, action figures, t-shirts, posters and other sundries will also be offered.

This place will run throughout the summer from Weds to Sun, 10am-5:30pm and is located on 1319 Broad St. Tourists to one of the Pacific Northwest’s many gems, the garden city of Victoria, may well be able to find a few shining jewels of the geeky variety to marvel at during that journey home.
