Between Duty and Obligation, Ultraman Rising Delivers DreamWorks Style Quality To This Japanese IP

The beauty that’s found in Ultraman Rising is that it’ll appeal to anyone who doesn’t know a thing about this franchise.

Ultraman Rising PosterComing to Netflix Nov 14, 2024

Just how many Ultramen exist depends on who you ask. With Netflix hosting its own series simply titled after this hero (which feels like a rehash of Iron Man Armoured Adventures) and also Ultraman Rising, the count has unofficially increased by two. Back in 2013, Tsuburaya Productions acknowledged thirty-six heroes existed since Ultra Q’s debut in 1966. As for how many more have existed since then, I believe at least eight have been added

Here, Ken Sato (Yuki Yamada) is an all American baseball star by day, and a Japanese hero by night. The only reason he’s pulling double duty is that his father, who was the previous incarnation, suffered an injury. Someone said it’s best for him to come home.

Even though everybody in Japan loves Ultraman, not everyone agrees. There are other folks who see him as a vigilante. Dr. Onda (Fumihiko Tachiki) is kind of like Harvey Bullock in the Batman universe; he’s a staunch opponent, although both protect Japan from monsters. This scientist leads the Kaiju Defence Force whereas the sports personality is solo. And that attitude won’t get him far in a sport dependent on teamwork.

Shin Ultraman PosterMovie review can be found here.

Cleopatra Entertainment has acquired U.S. territory rights to the latest incarnation film from the Japanese Superhero franchise Ultraman from Tsuburaya Productions. Entitled Shin Ultraman, this new Ultraman adventure was the sixth-highest grossing Japanese feature film of 2022 and will hit U.S. theaters via Fathom Events and Canada through Cineplex theatres (please check local listings) on January 11th and 12th, 2023.

Thankfully, those who missed the dubbed version day aren’t missing anything. The subtitled version playing in both nations shows off the film as the producers intended. And after this theatrical campaign concludes, hinting at maybe a few more runs at film festivals, Shin Ultraman will be released in the Spring of 2023 on VOD and also as a Deluxe Home Entertainment Blu-Ray and DVD release.

Written by Hideaki Anno (Shin Godzilla) and directed by Shinji Higuchi (Shin Godzilla, Attack on Titan), the film stars Takumi Saitoh (Shin Godzilla, 13 Assassins), Hidetoshi Nishijima (Drive My Car, The Wind Rises),  Masami Nagasawa (Before We Vanish, Mother), Daiki Arioka (Innocent Curse), and Akari Hayami (Gintama, Forget Me Not).

Ultraman Ginga Music Sample

Although a Japanese creation, Ultraman has been influential internationally in geek culture.

Through NihonHero we have sampled the theme song for the upcoming Ultraman Ginga TV series. The song is titled “Theme of Ultraman Ginga” and is performed by Yuji Inoue, guitarist of the J-pop group Girl Next Door.

Ultraman Ginga is produced by Tsuburaya Productions who are celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2013. The series will premiere in Japan on July 10, 2013. The album to the series will be released July 24, 2013.

The series stars Takuya Negishi, Mio Miyatake, Mizuki Ohno, Kirara Asuka and Takuya Kusakawa.

Although a Japanese creation, Ultraman has been influential internationally in geek culture. A prime example is Devo and their recent music video Monster Man.
