Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01 Blasts Back onto Blu-ray

The cult 1987 mecha OVA Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01 returns on Blu-ray with reauthored content, crisp 1080p visuals, and a trove of bonus features including director commentary and cast interviews. Fans can relive Tokyo-smashing action and discover behind-the-scenes insights from Shinji Aramaki’s iconic production.

Metal Skin Panic Madox-01 PosterThe 80s were a golden era for anime, and one title that earned a lot of love in club screenings was Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01, often mentioned alongside Bubblegum Crisis and Akira. What set it apart back then was the focus on manic, relentless action, and this anime—directed by Shinji Aramaki—delivered it in spades. As one of AnimEigo’s early Western releases, many of us, myself included, grabbed this original video animation. Now it’s making a comeback, thanks to MediaOCD!

Aramaki, the visionary behind Appleseed, Harlock: Space Pirate, and Ghost in the Shell: SAC 2045, packs 41 minutes of turbo-charged mecha chaos into MADOX-01, blending comedy and Tokyo-wide property destruction into a surprisingly compact thrill ride.

Everything Bubblegum is Back with The Complete Archive and Bubblegum Crash! Remastered through MediaOCD

Fans hoping to collect everything Bubblegum Crisis related don’t need to Bubblegum Crash with this update on upcoming releases this year and next.

Bubblegum Crash Cover ArtOne great thing that’s been consistent ever since MediaOCD  brought AnimEigo into its fold is that fans who missed crowdfunding fond this smaller company’s anime classics is that they’re bringing them back for the masses! This time, Bubblegum Crash is getting a revamped and remastered upgrade that’s sure to say that interest in this series is not being forgotten. This release is set for January 21, 2025.

The timing is terrific because in Oct will be Bubblegum Crisis: Complete Archive Art Book (Amazon link). This collection compiled by Jason Hofius features concept art, model sheets, key visuals, poster art, special magazine artwork and a lot more!

There’s lots to love about this series created by Toshimichi Suzuki, and while news of whether there will ever be a live-action version, that will still take time to gestate. The cinematic movie magic technology is here to make it good, but ultimately it’s up to the creators and Artmic to say yes to moving forward. I suspect the reason everything has stalled is due to not finding a major studio to help produce.

Those who haven’t seen Cartoon Saloon‘s Irish mythology trilogy can now see how it all began with The Secret of Kells (2009)! One of the problems was with early home video distribution. It’s limited availability in certain markets made this film generally unavailable in other countries.

This humble re-release to the United States may well pave the way for a box set which will add Song of the Seas and Wolfwalkers to the mix. With Shout! Factory and GKIDS behind this distribution, I hope that they are listening. Hopefully, Universal Studios Home Entertainment rights for Song is soon ending or can be transferred so one distributor can offer a compendium with an art folio to celebrate all three films.

Is This Studio Ghibli Blu-ray/DVD Re-release Worth Waiting For?

GKIDS is rereleasing all Studio Ghibli’s films in all new packaging!

Studio Ghibli and GKIDS, with distribution by Shout! Factory, will soon have on shelves in North America several titles from the library of Studio Ghibli this fall on Blu-ray & DVD Combo Pack and on DVD. The former versions from Disney had tiny issues which made them far from perfect and those fans who complained of the “red tint” problem with Spirited Away may well consider this remastered version (if they have not bought the Japanese version).

This new release promises significant upgrades to one of the world’s most coveted animation collections. Part of Studio Ghibli’s catalog of films to get this re-release includes Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo, Kiki’s Delivery Service and Princess Mononoke. These will arrive on October 17, 2017. Castle in the Sky and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind will be released on October 31, and The Secret World of Arrietty and Porco Rosso will follow on November 21. There’s no word of other titles like Pom Poko will see a Region 1 side release also. Essentially, this particular set spotlights the works of Hayao Miyazaki.
