Wotakoi: On Why Love is Hard for Otaku in this Movie Review

This parody on otaku life updates viewers on the term and it doesn’t have to be derogatory. Some folks can get overboard with some aspect of Japanese fandom, but how is that different from Star Wars fans with rooms dedicated to merchandise since its release in 1977? Or how about Transformers or KISS?

Based on the manga of the same name, Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku (ヲタクに恋は難しい,) by Fujita is a hilarious live action musical comedy that doesn’t require audiences to know anything about the source material.

Narumi Momose (Mitsuki Takahata) is a young office worker who reads yaoi manga. She keeps this fact hidden very well. Also, she likes Hirotaka Nifuji (Kento Yamazaki). They knew each other when really young, and now he’s working in the same building as her. He’s always had difficulty expressing his feelings to her and it’s very amusing to watch them rekindle their relationship. She’s high strung and he’s mild mannered.

Not every television show from the 90s (or present) can pull off a musical without imitating another. Often, it explores the innermost problems of the protagonist(s) while the antagonist acts as a supernatural force to ‘assist.’ Joss Whedon‘s “Once More With Feeling” in Buffy the Vampire Slayer set a precedent for future producers to consider. Xena: Warrior Princess is very notable. From the past 10 years, The CW’s Supernatural saw the Winchester brothers happening on a stage show version of themselves. In The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow, they had to sing as it helped them reveal hidden feelings to loved ones. ​Starry Starry Skies Productions‘ Buffie the Vampyre Slayer Parody stays true to theme and also showcases the wonderful singing talents from the Capital region.

Nerdy Picks of the 2019 Vancouver Fringe Theatre Festival

In addition to those shows in my picks of the Victoria Fringe Theatre event that are travelling over to Vancouver Fringe, my choices of this year include:

VanFringeFest_2019.jpgSome of the performers who appeared at the Victoria Fringe Festival do not have long to relax with the Vancouver Fringe celebration coming up days after. It’s a bigger event allowing for more venues and less walking to get around. In the works I have missed, I’m glad I have the option to do a day-trip over (weekend is better) to catch up on those that I missed due to overlap or some other reason.

When more space is available, this event held on Granville Island (and a few other areas nearby) allows for more acts to be pulled from the hat. In addition to those shows in my picks of the Victoria Fringe Theatre event that are travelling over, my choices of this year include:

Harry Potter, Funk You Up!

Everyone is jumping on the nostalgia bandwagon and that’s not a bad thing. Wether you are groovin’ to the 70’s disco-influenced song She Keeps Me Up by Nickelback or the pure 80’s funk of Mark Ronson‘s Uptown Funk featuring Bruno Mars, there is something for almost everyone to get down to.

Now even geeks, specifically the Potter fans, have a similar song they dance in their Hogwarts cloaks to. From KFaceTV — the people who brought you last year’s YouTube sensation Talk Nerdy To Me (original Talk Dirty by Jason Derulo) — comes Dark Lord Funk, a parody of Mark Ronson’s previously mentioned work.

The video has so far racked up over 450,000 views.

Getting on Board with Geekenders Star Wars Burlesque Show, a Review

There’s a new kind of adult entertainment in town, and that’s to combine burlesque with geek culture to form nerdlesque. This new form of dancing is taking the world by storm with local groups from Australia to New York reinventing all that was beloved from a long time ago. Instead of a galaxy, far, far away, everything is happening locally. Geekenders is a Vancouver, BC based group that formed in 2012 to give to the masses unique takes on popular franchise titles like Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, BBC’s Doctor Who and Jim Henson’s Labyrinth. On Friday night at GottaCon, a Victoria based gaming convention, this group put on a rousing fun act in Star Wars: A Nude Hope.
