First Peanuts Trailer is Visually Appealing but Lacks Heart

First impressions are very important with any teaser trailer. If anything, the most impressionable part of the Peanuts movie trailer (due for a Christmas 2015 release) is in what a wonderful job Blue Sky Studios has done in transitioning Charles M. Schulz’s creations from hand drawn animation to computer graphics. The fact that I can see the fur on Snoopy’s paws when he forms them around his eyes to represent binoculars is representative of the painstaking work this animation studio took to bring each Peanut character to life.

With that praise aside, I’m bewildered as to why this film shows a lack of what makes the Peanuts so timeless.

The trailer opens to find Woodstock and friends decorating Snoopy’s doghouse with Christmas lighting while he sleeps. Vince Guaraldi’s beautiful composition is playing in the background. Suddenly, Snoopy wakes up to the shadow of a bi-plane flying over head. Our dog leaps into action with not only a change into a flying helmet and scarf but into a change of accompanying music with a wholly out-of-place pop song.

The Minions have Landed a Trailer! An Analysis

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

Minions_poster

Minions have been on this planet far longer than we have. so the story goes. In the first official trailer, they are revealed to have gone by many names like Dave and Carl ever since they emerged from the sea. Just what they evolved from is probably not even going to be addressed. They are single-celled simple organisms after all. In what kind of world they are living in shows that they are as old as the first dinosaurs.

In a documentary style introduction by perhaps Geoffrey Rush himself, it’s revealed that they have one simple goal, and that’s to serve the most despicable master around. Just how much of that will persist in the film is unknown, but it just may very well work in the same style as March of the Penguins.

Who they will face is a rogue’s gallery of former tyrants like the mighty T. Rex, a ruthless Egyptian Pharaoh (Rameses?) and a cunning Dracula, to name a few, but with their lemming like mentality to follow the leader, all they end up doing is causing problems in the long run. The hilarity in this trailer shows that Illumination Studio’s Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy have the magic touch when it comes to offbeat humour. Directors Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda are in mighty fine company that has assisted them to craft a laugh out loud comedy that will no doubt put the smack down in what the Penguins of Madagascar movie can do if they were ever to be challenged to a standup comedy showdown. Brian Lynch wrote what may be a very good screenplay that might lead up to them meeting Gru in his heydays as a bad guy.

Before they do, there’s a huge adventure in store for them. That means meeting up with some humans, one of whom could be their next evil overlord, Scarlet Overkill (voiced by Sandra Bullock) and Herb (Jon Hamm). Just what Minions Kevin, Stuart and Bob have in mind by teaming up with them can be trouble for both the Overkills and the Minion mob.

This trailer can be watched time and time again and yet still feel refreshing. Sorry Penguins. Even though your movie is not out yet, this trailer’s off the wall humour shows that you’ve been defeated.

This film will be released July 10, 2015.

The Avengers 1st Trailer: I’ve Got No Strings

By James Robert Shaw (The Wind up Geek)

The first trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron is finally out.

Things look bleak for the Avengers in this first trailer, some internal squabbling is taking place and the moral of the team of heroes are at an all-time low.

In this trailer we get to see the Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Iron Man’s Hulkbuster armour, and a very creepy Ultron.

And with this darker version of Leigh Harline and Ned Washington’s “I’ve Got No Strings” accompanying the trailer, I’ll probably never look at that song number in Walt Disney’s Pinocchio (1940) the same way again.

When Hyper Reality Collides: The Frame to debut this Fall

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

TheFrameKeyArt

Fans of mystery and the supernatural should find the trailer for The Frame engaging as they see reality and fiction collide. There’s no real interpretation as to what’s presented in this tease. The montage of shots shows a man running away from something. Juxtapose that with a closeup of an antiquated typewriter, perhaps some people will assume that he’s a writer who crafted a tale that people have read from and found its contents too much to handle. There’s no exact details as to what the plot is. For now the producers are keeping that a secret. With that philosophy, they succeeded at creating a trailer that truly draws viewers into wanting to see the movie when it releases this Fall.

The film stars newcomers David Carranza and Tiffany Mualem and features Christopher Soren Kelly from Ink.  Other cast members include: Cal Bartlett, Anthony Nuccio, Jordan Doll, Kent Randell and Shauna Earp.

Jamin and Kiowa Winans

Fans of Jamin Winans work and Double Edge Films will find his new film tantalizing. He crafted the artful sensation, Ink (2009) — a story about souls caught in a light and darkness war set in the world of the Dreamtime — and masterful Spin (aka “God is a DJ”), available on YouTube. Both his early works show a skill in mythic storytelling.

This new film may well follow a similar distribution model as Ink. It was self-distributed through the Internet via torrent sites like PirateBay. Winans and his producer/wife, Kiowa, embraced the piracy, citing the incredible exposure could only help the film. They believe that “Independent films’ largest battle is against obscurity, not piracy.”

The Penguins of Madagascar gets an Adorably Cute Second Trailer

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

penguinsofmadagascar1

More cute details are being unveiled in this new second trailer for DreamWork’s Penguins of Madagascar. Not only do fans get to see Skipper, Rico, Kowalski, and Private as adorable little chicks in a segment revealing their humble beginnings, but also this tease may no doubt be a set up for more squeals of delight to come. Perhaps new merchandise will arise for children who want an adorable stuffed doll of their favourite penguin. If Happy Feet did not succeed in getting children to seek out those dancing toy novelties, this film will certainly do a better job at creating a marketing bonanza with its vast cast of Arctic and aquatic oddities.

Although approximately half of the trailer shows new material, the rest is recycled to help round out what the movie is about. Dave, a mad octopus, is on the rampage and he is intent on destroying the Penguins’ reputation. The trailer suggests that what they will do is going to cement them as legends in the spy world.

Two more trailers may get released when Thanksgiving Day in the States nears. Perhaps its best that the only thing served during this holiday weekend is Dave’s thirst for revenge.

The Night at the Museum 3 Gets a Trailer and Title!

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

Night_at_the_Museum_poster

The third Night at the Museum movie is definitely going to explain the origins of the golden tablet that animates the exhibits and wrap up this series at the same time. Titled Secrets of the Tomb, this film might include some Indiana Jones moments too.

The fun is in reuniting the ol’ gang and taking them to London to find the means of re-energizing the said item so life everlasting will not stop. The trailer is an amusing watch, and for Egyptian enthusiasts like me, this is the movie I’ve been waiting for! It seems a part of what I’ve conjectured may well come true if the cast listing for this film and the trailer is any indication.

As for how much of the ancient world will prevail throughout the movie, perhaps only 15-20 minutes will be spent revealing what the tablet is meant for and how it came into possession of Ahkmenrah.

But as for how much of the humour is being rehashed, yes a few jokes are looking like it can run thin with Dexter the monkey up to his usual tricks and a new dinosaur chasing the team around needing to be tamed. That will not stop fans of this movie trilogy from going to see this film come Christmas week, when this film is set to screen Dec 19.
