DreamWorks Brings One More Animated Product to the Small Screen

According to License! Global, “DreamWorks Animation focus on expansion into TV began with the 2012 acquisition of Classic Media’s property portfolio, which includes The Lone Ranger, Lassie and Where’s Waldo?”

Dreamworks LogoDreamworks Animation is continuously branching out and the small screen is just as important as the big screen for widening the appeal of several key properties. Dragons: Riders of Berk will soon returns with season two, Dragons: Defenders of Berk. And Turbo did well enough to have a television series, Turbo: F.A.S.T. (Fast Action Stunt Team), to premiere on Netflix December ’13.

In the past decade, they have brought their theatrical hits like Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness and Monsters vs Aliens the Animated Series to the small screen. Although they took longer than usual to bring to television, the response has generally been positive. Still in development since 2011 is Future Earth, a project with director Steven Speilberg lending a hand.

“Future Earth aims to be an epic mini-series examining what life on Earth will be like in 25, 50 and 100 years. The mini-series will draw from a vast number of sources, including the leading futurists, scholars and great minds of today, to dramatize and explore how various facets of our daily lives – health and medicine, technology, the environment, the military, the economy and media – will evolve over the next century.”

According to License! Global, “The focus on expansion into TV began with the 2012 acquisition of Classic Media’s property portfolio, which includes The Lone Ranger, Lassie and Where’s Waldo?

Now as for whether or not those old programs are going to be remade, that’s uncertain. Fans eager for Future Earth are still waiting. So what’s just a few more years?

Some scary updates with Dreamworks’ next project: The Bureau of Otherworldly Operations

Seth Rogan and Melissa McCarthy will lead The Bureau of Otherworldly Operations investigations in DreamWorks latest project.

www.indiewire.com_-600x421Feb 2023 update: Although this film has not been officially cancelled, there is a petition on Change.org to get this work back on track and we hope that it can be finished. The concept is solid, and we certainly want to see it! Maybe they’re waiting for after the next Ghostbusters film to guage interest?

Original Article:

One of Dreamworks Animation’s next projects is B.O.O. (Bureau of Otherworldly Operations) which is scheduled for June 5, 2015 release.

For fans of this studio’s works, this one is sounding all too familiar. Maybe this movie is taking ideas from the aborted scripts originally intended for Ghostbusters 3, or it may be inspired from recent films from past months, like R.I.P.D. Other influences may be in store, but very little information has been released about a film that is set for release two years down the road.

The concept of ghosts fighting ghosts is nothing new. More films from out of Asia (especially in Hong Kong cinema) have suggested that the hero has to become a member of the undead in order to fight forces beyond his control.

Cumberbatch will voice a high-ranking animal CIA agent that’s after Malkovich, who will be a “charming villian.”

As for how the Penguins will play into this plot must mean they will leave their merry zoo life and might be globe-trotting in a high paced spy action thriller.

Expected to be back will be Tom McGrath as the voice of Skipper, Chris Miller as Kowalski, John DiMaggio as Rico and Christopher Knights as Private.

To helm the movie will be director Simon J. Smith (“Bee Movie”) interpreting the script by Michael Colton and John Aboud. Is DreamWorks Turbo Worth the Hype?

Here we meet Theo (Ryan Reynolds) a comparatively small gastropod who dreams big.

turbo-movie%202013%20posterJames Shaw: To be honest, I never expected much from DreamWorks Turbo. The premise is simple: the story takes place in Van Nuys in the San Fernando Valley of California (although I suspect the suburbia was North Hills). Here we meet Theo (Ryan Reynolds) a comparatively small gastropod who dreams big. He wants to live life in the fast lane like his idol Indianapolis 500 racer Guy Gagné (Bill Hader).

But working at the plant (of the garden variety) daily is slowing him down while his unimaginative brother Chet (Paul Giamatti) is holding him back. Things take a turn for the better when an accident makes Theo realize he’s halfway to his goal. But will a chance meeting with dreaming taco stand co-owner Tito (Michael Peña) help him finish his journey?

Ed Sum: I do not know, but in the teaser trailer, I can not help but liken this snail’s newfound abilities to that of some effects shot used in the Spider-Man movies. To see him affected in a microcellular level made me think of him maybe turning superhero. I am not surprised that the adage of with great power comes great responsibility gets played up in this film.

J: I wondered after Theo became the insect world’s version of the Flash, who is there left to race against? I thought Nascar. I was wrong…but close.

E: There’s actually competing against the speedster himself, but that is not going to happen. DreamWorks does have a good “track” record of putting out entertaining hits. I thought this film would belong on my list of movies to miss seeing, but I had to see this movie before I could believe in the impossible. Even before James and I went to the theatre, he admitted that the concept was ludicrous and it was not worth seeing. I wanted to see some light-hearted animated product and dragged him along. At least in that department, this film delivers.

The Rise of the Guardians, A Movie and DVD review

A few ideas have been tossed out from the book version to make Rise of the Guardians work, and it shows.

Rise of the Guardians DVD CaseThe Rise of the Guardians (RotG) is an interesting legends to lore tale that turns characters like Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny to superheroes. It’s not like Marvel Comic’s Avengers, but rather a stripped down version of X-Men. The CGI and cinematography are wonderful to behold, especially in high definition, but the story is all too familiar. It’s like watching a re-imagining of Peter Pan.

Jack Frost replaces the titular character of Pan, and Pitch Black aka the Boogeyman (or Nightmare King) is Hook. They have a relationship which can get forged if the two decide to mutually work together. While one story deals with eternal youth and all the irresponsibilities it can represent, the other looks at accepting the consequences of age and developing wisdom. These themes are loosely explored in RotG but the emphasis is on Frost and how well he can work in a team environment.
