Closing February with These Top 3 Best Reads from Dark Horse Comics

We present three of our most favourite reads from Dark Horse Comics that were released this month.

Dark Horse LogoThe best reads from Dark Horse Comics in February boils down to three titles! This publisher always has a bit of everything to love and technically I have four works which I enjoyed reading. As much as I tried to enjoy the new Star Wars as published by Marvel Comics, the imagination doesn’t hold a candle to one legacy release, Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures. This work deserves honourable mention, at least.

As for my top three, they are:

When Carmilla Arrives on a Dark Horse During Lunar New Year!

Sheridan le Fanu’s Carmilla gets a modern Chinese spin by Amy Chu and Soon Lee.

Available in comic shops and book stores near you. Coming soon onAmazon USA, Feb 84, 2023

Dark Horse Comics Berger Books Imprint
Spoiler Alert

Amy Chu and Soon Lee’s reinterpretation on Sheridan le Fanu’s Carmilla is all kinds of wonderful. Not only do we get a modern interpretation from a Chinese perspective but also Lee’s auburn design on the pages where it flashbacks, alluding to the original prose, is beautiful. Here, the vampire is named Violet, and the place she makes her base of operation may be named after the famous vampire we all know.

Here, Athena is a social worker wishing she can do more for those struggling to survive in Manhattan. Her life is okay, but it seems something is holding her back. When one of her patients turns up dead, she investigates in true Kolchak fashion and what she finds in that nightclub goes beyond simply confronting some pimp. She becomes enamoured, and as a lesbian herself, she understands what’s going on. But after meeting Violet, there’s more than meets the eye not only about this seductress but also this nightmare that soon unfolds.

In A Christmas for Crows, Leonide the Vampyr Makes A Chilling Return

Leonide the Vampyr is ready to haunt your dreams in book two, A Christmas for Crows.

A Christmas for CrowsDark Horse Comics
Spoiler Alert

Comic book extraordinaire Mike Mignola has crafted a character which I believe will surpass even Wednesday Addams’ fame. There’s more than meets the eye to who Leonide the Vampyr is, and in book two, A Christmas for Crows, her backstory suggests her curse was preordained. I will not spoil too much of this beautiful story. All I can figure out so far, before she got turned, must have been very complex.

And throughout the years, she’s been selective in who was bled dry in order for her to go on. Those victim’s curse seems to differ from hers. One family might have metamorphosized into crows, hence this volume’s title and like the Wandering Jew, both are fated to chase the night. In this latest work, this murder visit Leonide, and as for what they do, well, that’d be revealing too much.

There’s a Different Kind of Alien Invasion with Organisms from an Ancient Cosmos

Organisms from an Ancient Cosmos is an alien invasion story that Hollywood doesn’t usually dream up.

Organisms from an Ancient Cosmos
Available to order on Amazon USA as a hardcover and Kindle/Comixology

Dark Horse Comics
Spoiler Alert

Release Date: November 23, 2022

When Organisms from an Ancient Cosmos appear on earth, the revelations will send humanity to where no man has gone before. That’s because the war is futile. That’s the gist I get from the huge first act by S. Craig Zahler, and to read through the second, that’s a movie in itself! This adult graphic novel, available in hardcover, has a lot to digest–pardoning the joke–as the Earth gets consumed by some biomechanical entity! And no government can figure out why this alien craft is here.

Sometimes we’re not humbled to know. Although this work doesn’t directly reference particular pop culture invasions like War of the Worlds, I feel there’s more to it in the sense of what the movie Independence Day revealed. The aliens are parasites, and they’ll wander the cosmos to find mineral rich planets to feast upon. My guess is that they’re as old as Galactus from the Marvel Comics Universe.

After the first attack, billionaire industrialist Carlton Land loses his wife and he wants revenge. Regarding what he learns from Biologist Aimee O’Donnell and USAAF Chief Scientist Kenneth Yamazaki is that they must do something else instead of continuing the fight.

Top Three Dark Horse Comics Releases from October

The best Dark Horse Comics releases from October to enjoy Halloween with is wide-and varied, and my picks include:

Dark Horse Comics Reads #1 - The EC Archives: Incredible Science Fiction
Available to order on Amazon USA

I have found my top three picks of the best Dark Horse Comics releases from October. A few were provided ahead of street release, and they’re now available at a local comic book store near you. They make for fine reading on a cold night, when not everyone wants to experience the brisk outdoors. Tis the season to sit by a cozy light, enjoy the warmth of the fireplace and enjoy a graphic novel/novella.

The EC Archives: Incredible Science Fiction leads the pack since I like to see what comics were like back in the days. This publisher is better known for its horror comics than educational storytelling, and to get a peek at what else they printed makes for some great reading. Grant Geissman’s forward gives newcomers a history lesson regarding comic book censorship, and Mark Evanier’s mini-essay explains why these works must be preserved.

Three Dark Horse Comics Must Reads for Halloween 2022

Instead of offering the traditional top ten, since some fun at All Hallow’s Eve Night is needed, I have three Dark Horse Comics must reads that I’ll be brooding over.

Dark Horse Comics must reads include Leonide
Available on ComiXology

As All Hallow’s Eve Night nears, I have three Dark Horse Comics must reads for the season. When I first looked at them, I was entranced until my window shutter blasted open, a bird flew in, and cawed, “Nevermore! Nevermore!” I screamed, threw the book up in the air, and hid under the bed covers.

Okay, that didn’t happen, but with plenty of seasonal offerings happening nearly one atop another, it’s easy to not finish reading in one night. The vibes from Leonide the Vampyr, Miracle at the Crow’s Head certainly got my imagination running wild. This work, written by Mike Mignola, certainly takes a few cues from Bram Stoker’s seminal Dracula if I’m to assume he’s paying tribute to more than one source material.
