Shoot ‘Em Up Cyberpunk, with Turbo Overkill!

Turbo Overkill takes over-the-top to never-before-reached heights. Activate Hero Time(™), a new form of slow motion with a twist. Build incredible speed by wall-running and dashing.

TURBO OVERKILL - Gameplay Reveal - YouTube Turbo Overkill, the ultraviolent cyberpunk FPS from the creator of award-winning DOOM II mod Total Chaos and published by Apogee Entertainment, promises to paint Paradise blood red in 2022. This game will be delivered on Steam, GOG, and Epic Games Store for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.

The trailer drop last week looks great! It shows a very fluid game as a player navigates through a neon city like the character is from Promare and delivers lots of carnage. In what isn’t revealing is in how Fifth Element the whole game feels. yes, players can jack cars in a race around the city to kill opponents and perhaps even blow up the digital web! But for good ol’ fashioned gun play, the smooth frame rates being teased at says it all.

From the Press Release:

Rev up the savage chainsaw leg and start chopping as Johnny Turbo, a mercenary returning to clean-up his crime-ridden hometown of Paradise. In this Blade Runner-meets-DOOM hellscape, Johnny finds the city’s entire population possessed by Syn, a rogue AI, and its army of augmented minions. Desperate for enough money to outrun his past mistakes, Johnny takes on the impossible job of destroying the greatest AI ever created. Rival bounty hunters want to claim the prize first… nothing is easy in paradise.

‘Punk it up with Vault’s Fox and Hare!

The protagonists of our story are rebelling against the status quo of their world just as much as we, the creators, are rebelling against the status quo of the cyberpunk genre.

Fox and Hare Comic Book CoverVault Comics
Coming November 2021

Vault is thrilled to announce Fox and Hare, a thrilling new cyberpunk series co-created by writer Jon Tsuei (Sera and the Royal Stars, Run Love Kill), and artist Stacey Lee (Marvel’s Silk, The Unstoppable Wasp, Gwenpool).

When black market coder Aurora Yi uncovers top secret data that has tapped into the past lives of the citizens of Mazu Bay, her world is turned upside down. The mega corporation Synastry Designs wants its data back and is hot on her trail. Aurora has no choice but to turn to the Fox and the Hare, the most feared mercenaries in the city, for protection. Rebellion. Reclamation. Rebirth.

“I’ve always been drawn to the cyberpunk genre, but I never saw myself represented in those stories, despite their heavy usage of Asian aesthetics,” said Jon Tsuei. “I began to wonder, what if Asian people reclaimed the aesthetics of cyberpunk and centered ourselves in the narrative? As I spent time with that question, I realized that it wasn’t enough to just place Asian faces in the story. We also had to reframe the themes of new technology (cyber) and rebellion (punk) through an Asian lens.

“You Have My Word” Dark Horse Comics Will Continue Expanding Cyberpunk 2077

This world created by Michael Pondsmith for a role playing game is huge and there’s plenty of side-stories of life in Night City to tell in sequential art form. The medium is perfect since there’s a visual element which really must be seen.

Spoiler Alert

Cyberpunk 2077’s continuing comic book series, “You Have My Word,” has gone Hispanic in this second miniseries about life in Night City. This time, the setting is with how one particular gang is running business. To see that the Valentino’s are involved has me pulling out the Art of book from this publisher (review can be found here) to remind myself of what’s going on. The intro page has a lot to pack in. The art style from the team of Jesús Hérvas (artist) and Giulia Brusco (colourist) suggest something meso-American and ancient to come if the murals are telling.

Usually including old world folklore don’t always work with this genre. Anything mystical can be imagined through tech. All any creative hacker needs are devices to project hard light holograms to create whatever he or she imagines.

What can go Wrong when the New Gods: Nezha Reborn Mythology Goes Cyberpunk?

This movie starts off strong with its introductions, but sadly Nezha Reborn loses steam by the end of the second act.

The release of Nezha Reborn in America may well be late, since the debut doesn’t coincide with any national holiday. In China, it hit theatres for Chinese New Year, and just how it fared was reasonable, raking in approximately 21 million in US dollars according to reports. This post-modern take is confusing. The visual elements are not altogether steampunk and not fully cyberpunk either. Had it been one than the other, I’d be more intrigued with the world building going on.

Li Yunxiang (Yang Tianxiang) is a reincarnation of the god, and when compared to the other version from the Fengshen Cinematic Universe, I prefer the spunky miscreant child over this young adult. I kept on wanting to shout Kaneda! The dystopian vibe is straight out of Akira, and the plot deals with how a mega-corporation wants to control everything in Donghai city.

Cyberpunk 2077. Welcome to Life in Night City! Trauma Team #2 Reviewed

She doesn’t understand why she has to keep Apex alive. He’s half man and half cyborg. The way he looks and laughs is as scary as Freddy Krueger before a kill.

Potential Spoiler Alert

Parts of the West Coast of North America may seem clear of the haze from the wildfires in California, but I see the future being presented to me sooner than I realize. All those orange hues in the sky certainly put me in the mood to look at the preview of issue #2, and thankfully we are not headed to that Blade Runner 2049 universe.

Well, not yet. If corporations are truly going to take over and put in measures to that future Cullen Bunn predicts in this comic, then we’re all doomed.

Cyberpunk 2077! On Trauma Team & Transhumanism

We’re not going to immediately see any of that fancy Netrunning stuff with this comic book series, but I’m willing to bet it’s coming! In the meantime, I expect Nadia is going to be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed and numbered!

SPOILER ALERT

The release of Cyberpunk 2077 Trauma Team does more than bring fond memories of why I love R. Talsorian’s roleplaying game of the same name. It has undergone many revisions, going from 2020 to Red (to keep the idea futuristic) and to see it finally come to a comic book is a cybernetic wet dream come true. Miguel Valderrama‘s artistic style and layouts tells long time fans of this world that he knows what fans want from a game that’s hasn’t gotten a lot of transition into other media. Jason Wordie‘s bold use of colours are exceptional. These two artists most likely examined what made collecting the books appealing before realizing Cullen Bunn’s tale to a smorgasbord of anime style action!

The video game is coming soon (November 19) and I’m ready to soak up any other material being released prior as my anticipation to ride the virtual information highway is already at an all time high!
