A Studio Ghibli Holiday Guide to Relaxing During Winter Break

What we offer are tips in how to dance your cares away, Fraggle Rock–style within this Studio Ghibli Holiday Guide. Burnout doesn’t have to be the final note of the year.

Studio Ghibli Holiday GuideAt the end of December, the season can feel less like a celebration and more like a rat race through consumer culture and obligation. When that happens, I like to suggest something radical in its simplicity: slow down. With this Studio Ghibli holiday guide, I’m sharing what I fallback to when looking for a way to make a full stop, destress and treat the break as it’s originally intended.

Christmas holds deep meaning for those who choose to observe its traditions. New Year’s Day carries its own rhythms and expectations as well. Still, neither should feel like a duty checked off a list. It helps to arrive to a family gathering, party or random get-together with the right intentions rather than rushing from one obligation to the next.

New Animated Winter Holiday Specials for 2025

A fresh wave of animated holiday specials arrives for 2025, ranging from Disney’s return to Prep & Landing to Japan’s winter anime events and the BBC’s storybook charm. This year splits cleanly between North America’s glossy franchises and the more eclectic creations from the rest of the world. Here’s a look at the biggest new releases bringing warmth to the season.

Winter Animated Holiday SpecialsWhen the end of the year approaches, just what’s offered on television (or being streamed) is always a curious mix of comfort-food to get some folks in the mood for Deceember, and seasonal spectacle. Whether it’s about Yule, Winter Solstice or Christmas, this year’s offerings has enough to sate any taste. Here’s a roundup of this year’s brand-new animated or animated-adjacent winter specials. Please check your local listings for showtimes.

Prep & Landing: The Snowball

Prep & Landing- The SnowballDisney brings back the elf-operative duo Wayne and Lanny for a new crisis at the North Pole. The unstable “Snowball Protocol” threatens the entire Christmas mission, forcing the pair into action. It’s classic Prep & Landing—spy comedy, festive warmth, and a lot of holiday mischief. This new 22-minute special is the first fresh Prep & Landing story since 2011, reuniting the original cast while adding a few new North Pole recruits to the team.

A Creature Was Stirring Arrives on Home Video This Week to Scare Up Love

When considering a tiny part of A Creature Was Stirring takes inspiration from Judy Collin’s holiday poem, I’m guessing there are more elements in play that neither friend and foe realise.

Well GO USA
Spoiler Alert

Although the creature feature A Creature Was Stirring had limited theatrical screenings last month, I had my plate full on what to enjoy over the holiday season. This eerie variation of a trapped in a cabin in the woods’ scenario would eventually get viewed, and I’m hoping the coming home video release will offer a behind-the-scenes featurette to explain the finer points.

This tale about a mighty morphing porcupine has the vibe of a Stuart Gordon film. And when the focus is not about two teens claiming to be Jehovah’s witnesses entering into a situation they are totally unprepared for, what’s presented is more familial.
