Anglicon 2016 is Getting Sontar-ized with Dan Starkey!

Dan StarkeyThe Sontaran Invasion fleet is coming to the Pacific Northwest next year, and its ambassador will be addressing the masses at Anglicon 2016! Well, that’s if Strax was still with the order. The actor behind the irrepressible character, Dan Starkey will be appearing instead; he will entertain fans with stories from behind the set, and perhaps reveal what’s next for the Paternoster Gang in the series. They defined one part of what made Matt Smith’s run in the Doctor Who series great.

Is Anglicon To Be Invaded By Daleks?

terry_molloyActually no. Daleks will not be invading Anglicon, but the Pacific Northwest’s Doctor Who television and British media convention will be hosting the Daleks’ creator, Davros.

Terry Molloy is known to many Doctor Who fans for playing Davros during the Peter Davison, Colin Baker, and Sylvester McCoy years. Molloy revised his role as the father of the Daleks in a 2005 stage play titled The Trial of Davros. He can also be hard voicing his signature character in the Doctor Who Big Finish audio productions.

Outside of the Whoverse, Molloy has kept busy in television by appearing in Simon Wheeler and Alan Whiting’s Kingdom (2007), as George Mellor in Chalkface (1991), and more recently as Michael Lord in the TV mini-series Kosmos (2015).

Molloy will be appearing with Red Dwarf‘s Robert Llewellyn at Anglicon in 2016.

Anglicon will be hosted at The DoubleTree by Hilton Seattle Airport Hotel August 5th-7th.

Fans of Doctor Who should take note: a regeneration of a beloved convention is happening in the Pacific Northwest. Shawn Marier is leading a team of enthusiasts to bring back Anglicon!

This event celebrates British popular culture and it originally ran from 1988 to 2004. Back then, declining interest in shows from across the pond was part of the reason why it no longer continued. Although nobody was certain about BBC’s seminal show returning to screens the next year, interest started growing again especially during the David Tennant years. In the West Coast, only Gallifrey One prospered, but there were limitations because of the venue limiting the numbers. To see interest in British programming return is more than just a godsend.

Marier is a fixture in the Pacific Northwest scene since the late 80’s. Having been involved in this region’s many events celebrating pop culture fandom over the years, working behind the scenes and acting as convention chairman, the one thing that really mattered to him was to help give back to the fan base. The theme of the convention never mattered since it was about the people and camaraderie that can be experienced in the shows put on by dedicated fans for fans.

Pompidou TV Review: Silent Comedy Lacks the Stroke of Genius

Mention the words silent comedy and only the best creators in the field, Charlie Chaplin, Laurel & Hardy, Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle and Rowan Atkinson will come to mind. After viewing of the first episode of BBC2’s Pompidou, Matt Lucas’ name may also be considered to be among them — considered but not yet chosen. There is much to enjoy about the newest series from the man who gave such wonderful performances such as Toad in the 2006 TV film The Wind In the Willows, but like many pilot television series, the first episode is usually the one with the most bumps in the road.

Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Round Up!

I’ve still got the memo from [original producer] Verity Lambert outlining what she wanted for the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, so I’ve gone with that …

608So, just what do fans know so far about the coming Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special? On Nov 23, Matt Smith, John Hurt and David Tennant will be the Doctor. Jenna Coleman, Billie Piper, Joanna Page are amongst the first billed, but as for returning cameos from the classic series, BBC is still keeping mum. The likelihood of anyone appearing from the original 1964-1989 run is slim. Well, the exception may well simply lay with Nicholas Briggs.
