A Retrospective on Detective Dee in the Cinema Front (and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame)

When there’s over 40 films featuring Detective Dee (Di Renjie), just where should a newcomer start? What’s offered here is a love letter to the franchise.

Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom FlameThe love for China’s greatest crime buster from the feudal age is strong, and while he’s better known as Di Renjie (狄仁傑), audiences worldwide better know him as Detective Dee. Although some of the original tales got translated over, that hasn’t stopped others from bringing life to this 7th century magistrate. And as for why he got a slight change in occupation, I suspect the new role rolls off the tongue better, and what he does sounds more intriguing.

I discovered him through Tsui Hark‘s films, but I’m glad to say I still have many more to view. The main reason other works didn’t get internationally distributed is because they were made for television or distributors from elsewhere didn’t understand his appeal. I became a fan because of the supernatural elements that he sometimes has to face. And after getting a huge gift package recently, it’s time to get caught up!

From Wild Arms to Armed Fantasia, This Video Game is Worth Waiting For!

The best part of why Wild Arms is so beloved is because of the music first, and world building second. It lives again under a new name: Armed Fantasia!

Armed Fantasia- To the End of the Wilderness Prromo PosterWhen I last wrote a retrospective that included the latest status of the Wild Arms franchise, not much has changed. Although the original is available on the PlayStation5, sadly no one is interested in continuing. There was a Wild Arms Mobile and Million Memories for smartphones, but sadly when it didn’t get translated and offered to an international market, the game died. Thankfully, executive producer Akifumi Kaneko is not letting the world he helped create fade. In its place is a spiritual successor titled Armed Fantasia, which is still in development.

Hiroya Oku’s Gantz G Omnibus is Ready to Rumble Via A Dark Horse

After Dark Horse Comics released twelve omnibus collections of the original Gantz manga series, they’re continuing with Gantz G Omnibus and hopefully, that’s just one.

Anyone who has followed Gantz will find a lot of familiarity with the concept. When a young teen accidentally dies, instead of moving on to their next life, they awaken in a type of limbo where they have to prove their worth. From the original tale set in modern day Japan to a side-story and now a historical action drama, this crazy R.I.P.D. cum Predator concept has elements to like, and danger to gasp at. The creators adapted it to anime, but reading the original story remains unsurpassed.

From the Press Release:

Gantz, the powerful manga series from creator Hiroya Oku, has garnered a massive following since it debuted in 2000 and became a pillar of the action genre. Dark Horse Manga has brought Gantz to English in 37 traditional tankobon style paperback volumes, which have been collected into 12 omnibus volumes that gather multiple chapters in one.
