Ainbo, Spirit of the Amazon, Where Forth Art Thou?

Although Ainbo, Spirit of the Amazon feels no different from Bigfoot Family, this film’s only saving grace is in why living in harmony with nature matters.

Ainbo, Spirit of the AmazonAinbo, Spirit of the Amazon, has done a world tour and the last place this film hasn’t properly visited is North America. This work isn’t listed for theatres (and streaming) yet, and that’s odd when considering its potential. Although developed for General audiences, hopefully other animation enthusiasts can get on board its message of saving forests far and wide.

It’s a beautifully animated film that instils wonder of what life must be like in this region and how unique the indigenous culture here is. At first, I thought the people were of Mayan descent but instead, they’re just Amazonians. An amusing bit of historical inaccuracy is why do they know English? Suspension of belief is needed to get through this fantasy which takes more than a few cues from a certain powerhouse from Anaheim, California.

Letting the Wolf Out in The Cursed

In The Cursed, just how brother and sister are doing their best, especially when burdened by the sins of their father, gets deftly examined.

The Cursed movie review & film summary (2022) | Roger EbertPlease check local listings for showtimes near you.

To put a unique spin on the classic werewolf legend is hard. Thankfully, writer director Sean Ellis succeeds in giving The Cursed (also known as Eight for Silver in other markets) a layer not so frequently explored. He opens the story during the Great War–to which he’s no doubt making an analogy of–and flashes back to a longer tale about why a certain individual has become seemingly immortal.

The look of 19th century France is beautifully recreated, and there’s a certain parlour of gloom foreshadowing the later acts. To say it’s a Gothic tale doesn’t reveal much. To suggest how it’s like E.A. Poe’s Fall of the House of Usher hints at more, concerning a family legacy. This film deals with how brother and sister are doing their best, especially when burdened by the sins of their father in their continued life….

Where’s Noah in Netflix’s Extinct?

Unfortunately, there’s no anthropomorphic avengers to really save Extinct from mediocrity.

Extinct (2021) - IMDbAvailable to view on Netflix

Extinct is an odd animated film with an unusual history. It’s clearly made for a Chinese audience in mind and it doesn’t always acknowledge it. This movie written by Joel Cohen, John Frink, and Rob LaZebnik (best known for their work on The Simpsons) doesn’t translate over well. I imagine the plan was that, should this movie be successful, it’d launch a merchandise empire of oddball shaped critters.

This film first debuted in the UK, went to Russia and it took the long route to making it back to the Americas. Its like these doughnut shaped animals don’t want to be found, and nor do they want the love from the country that can help this movie survive. Instead, it’s on Netflix.
