Ed on by for Seattle’s Cinerama Experience

10548066_10205688374821130_5286970000640909208_oThe Cinerama is a very special movie theatre located in Seattle, Washington that brings back all that’s enjoyable about watching films on the big screen. It’s been raved about by a few friends who have been there more than I. To learn about its history is one thing, but to know what it’s become is another. When the operation started up in 1963, just after the Century 21 Exposition, it had its share of problems when interest in getting a proper movie-going experience went on a decline in decades that followed. Microsoft co-founder, Paul Allen, loved coming to this theatre and rescued it in the late 90’s.

Stepping into this building’s interior was like a walk back through time. I was greeted with friendly smiles and helpful assistance from the staff. The next thing that caught my eye were the displays of authentic movie and television costumes in the foyer. The concession looked like a massive stand that offered a bit of everything. I was reminded of how The Vic Theatre back home displayed their food items and when considering the age of that home-based theatre to this one, I would not be surprised if they were built in the same decade.

Seattle’s EMP Museum Gets a New Display: Infinate Worlds of Science Fiction

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

IMG_9027

The EMP Museum has a new exhibit, Infinite Worlds of Science Fiction, to go along with its many other popular culture themed displays. Along with Star Wars and the Power of Costume, Indie Game Revolution, Star Wars: The Power of Costume (a travelling exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service & the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art), We are 12 and Fantasy: Worlds of Myth and Magic, to take them all in half a day can be done.

But at a time when I was there to partake in Emerald City Comicon, I looked at as much as I could of the EMP world in an evening. This event opened a few weeks ago, and I’d be remiss to not check it out, even with a slightly impatient friend (he hates long lineups) in tow.

The Vintage Tempest’s Emerald City Comic Con Journal 2015 & Ch-ch-changes!

Changes are in store for Emerald City Comic Con now that it is under new ownership. Some of it is noticeable at the 2015 event and based on what I have experienced, I think what’s planned will be good. For one thing, instead of three days of the show, there will be four. That might alleviate some of the congestion as not many people will attempt to cram as much into a day.

And maybe for next year’s show, some events can be spread out better or there will be the return of some fond favourites. The Star Wars reading by Twisted Toonz was missing this year. In previous shows, it was re-enacted by the voice talent that comes to this Seattle-based show. This year would have been killer with the fact that Patrick Warburton, the voice of the Tick and the television version of Buzz Lightyear, was in the house! Include Janet Varney, the lead character in Avatar: Legend of Korra, Steve Blum (voice of Starscream in Transformers Prime), Veronica Taylor (Ash from Pokemon) and Tabitha St. Germain (My Little Pony), and the possibilities would have been stellar!

The 2015 Emerald City Comiccon Survival Guide

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

Emerald City Comicon

Every year, the layout of where some events take place during the Emerald City Comicon regularly changes. Part of shuffling is to help fine-tune certain aspects of the show, but for attendees who have gone to at least four shows successively, like me, I’ve noticed that the gaming, LEGO and the model displays area are getting downsized. Gaming has its own floor this year, which is great, but it feels like a smaller space when compared to last year’s where the convention used the Sheridan Hotel as its game area.

Unlike the three buildings used last year, this year marks its return to two, and that can lead to potential bottlenecking of the main access route between floors.

The best thing to know in advance is that there are two escalators from the main level that people can take. Both more or less take the same amount of time to arrive at the destination, and those people who know the centre can take advantage of these secret passageways like an expert dungeon crawler to get to a panel just in time, or to line up for them.

Fans of Doctor Who should take note: a regeneration of a beloved convention is happening in the Pacific Northwest. Shawn Marier is leading a team of enthusiasts to bring back Anglicon!

This event celebrates British popular culture and it originally ran from 1988 to 2004. Back then, declining interest in shows from across the pond was part of the reason why it no longer continued. Although nobody was certain about BBC’s seminal show returning to screens the next year, interest started growing again especially during the David Tennant years. In the West Coast, only Gallifrey One prospered, but there were limitations because of the venue limiting the numbers. To see interest in British programming return is more than just a godsend.

Marier is a fixture in the Pacific Northwest scene since the late 80’s. Having been involved in this region’s many events celebrating pop culture fandom over the years, working behind the scenes and acting as convention chairman, the one thing that really mattered to him was to help give back to the fan base. The theme of the convention never mattered since it was about the people and camaraderie that can be experienced in the shows put on by dedicated fans for fans.

The bodies are piling up (or rather the guests are) and unlike zombies of television and film these bodies will be alive and well as they walk around (or sit comfortably) at the 2015 Emerald City Comicon (ECCC).

One of those bodies (guests) just announced by the ECCC is actor and voice artist Steven Yeun. Yeun is known better as Glenn Rhee on AMC’s television series The Walking Dead. He has also appeared in TV series Law and Order: LA, Warehouse 13, The Big Bang Theory and the film My Name Is Jerry starring Doug Jones.

Yeun has also used his talent to voice characters in the Crysis video game series as well as animated series The Legend of Korra (Wan), American Dad, and he will be voicing the lead character of Tony Chu in the upcoming adaptation of Image Comics’ Chew.

Steven Yeun will be appearing at the convention Saturday and Sunday only.
