Chatting with Paul McAllister about Monster House Publishing, Their Adorable Mascot Herman & The Future…

The great thing about Monster House Publishing is that they plan on testing the waters with their properties in other media fronts!

McAllister and German Herman Recycles - Monster House Publishing
When Monster House Publishing gets to celebrate a milestone of being around for a solid ten years, I’m sure Founder and CEO Paul McAllister could not be any happier. He began this business after getting his first children’s book, There and Back Again, A Herman Tale, published, and realising there are others like him from his home province who love to get their ideas in print. That first challenge is often difficult!

If it had not been for the caring influence of teachers, librarians, family, and a well-timed visit to his elementary school by a local author carrying the message that “Anyone can become an author,” he very well could have slipped through the cracks. For much of his life, his ADHD and dysgraphia was a hurdle, and to see him overcome that to become the success that he is now is encouraging!

Today, Monster House Publishing aims to inspire a love of literacy in children across his home province, throughout Canada, and beyond by bringing fun and engaging stories by Maritime authors and artists to life. I had time to talk to him about how he got started, and where he’s at now since to persevere in today’s publishing climate is tough!

McAllister responded, “New Brunswick is a small province, and it’s a small industry comparatively speaking, and when I reached out to my contacts in the arts that I wanted to publish my story about Herman, I quickly found out that there wasn’t any anglophone children’s publishing company in existence‌ here. So, on a whim, I decided to self-publish. When I was registering the ISBN, through Library and Archives Canada, they asked what publishing company’s name–so right off the top of my head, I said Herman’s Monster House publishing–I made it up right there.

VFFOnline: Opening the Doors to The Secret Garden (2020)

To give this movie a cinematic edge, a Harry Potter treatment was needed and this detail should be of no surprise when David Heyman is one of the producers.

The Secret Garden looks more like a secluded glen in this latest adaptation of the novel of the same name. No knowledge of Frances Hodgson Burnett‘s work is needed because this movie stays faithful to the outline. To give this movie a cinematic edge, a Harry Potter treatment was needed and this detail should be of no surprise when David Heyman is one of the producers.

Sadly, because of the pandemic, it never got a proper theatrical run. It wouldn’t have broken any box office records, but when considering the effort spent to scale up the beauty this garden represents, the investment lost is just that and hopefully its life in home video can make back the money spent.

Looking Back with Candice Woodward & Realizing Toy Store Time Machine

Toy Store Time Machine Author, Candice WoodwardBy Ed Sum
(The Vintage Tempest)

Available on Amazon USA, Google Books and at the store, Cherry Bomb Toys.

Toys not only fuel but also power the imagination. Candice Woodward’s debut children’s book, Toy Store Time Machine: Robots in Peril, shows how important they are to any child’s growth and how this philosophy matters. Not only does it teach good wholesome values but also it’s a fun read! She’s the second in her family who’s now published. Her sister, Olivia, has her own dark fantasy series. Getting recognized in the competitive market of children’s literature is difficult, and while she did try with major publishers, this new author realized self-publishing with Balboa Press is the best way to get her ideas out.

Counting the Goosebumps found in the Sequel…

The Secret Garden* Spoiler Alert

Jack Black is more than R. L. Stine in the Goosebumps film franchise. His goofy charm on screen makes for a lot of fun. But when considering he’s also in The House with a Clock in Its Walls, which was in theatres last month, perhaps the lack of his presence was intentional so no confusion is made.

In the sequel, the heroes are Sarah Quinn (Madison Iseman), younger brother Sonny (Jeremy Ray Taylor) and friend to the family Sam Carter (Caleel Harris). The boys start up their own junkyard business and on their first job; they find a mysterious book inside a Pandora’s box. Before they know it, Slappy the Dummy (Mick Wingert), appears and they speak the words to give him life again.
