Marvel’s Agent Carter to set Seattle Hearts Afire!

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

Hayley_Atwell_59579Look out, evil spy-doers! Marvel’s Agent Carter has a mission in Seattle, and that’s to scope out the danger that may be afoot at Emerald City Comiccon (March 27-29) in a special Friday engagement. This seminal character is played by Hayley Atwell and she rose into immediate notice in the film The Dutchess for a mainstream audience and Captain America: First Avenger for the geeks to take a delight to. On the television front, some may remember her in The Pillars of the Earth, a historical mini-series.

Atwell has a natural feistiness that’s a wonder to behold. And add on top that British mystique, she’s a talent that many Anglophile fans will appreciate. To hear her talk about her career and interact with fans at her Friday only appearance will no doubt have some clambering for tickets to Seattle’s biggest and baddest convention for pop culture enthusiasts to enjoy. But they better be good; according to Atwell’s twitter feed, she’s been known to take out a few folks too because she’s a slugger in real life during the production of Agent Carter.

Almost all the tickets are sold out online for this show, but if fans phone around and look, there may be a handful of stores in the Pacific Northwest that still have some day passes to sell.

[VFF’15] Where do the Scares Belong in It Follows? A Review

Fans of minimalist horror will love what’s created in a simple tale of terror, It Follows and to find where it will screen next requires carefully paying attention to film festival or this movie’s own Facebook page for where it will play next.

Students of the occult will want to figure out what the entity is and to figure out what the monster represents can be studied in film analysis class but is any of the above really needed at all? Most likely not, but in a film that certainly delves into themes about sexual awakening, this tribute to 80’s sentimentality certainly delivers the thrills in an effective manner that even John Carpenter would approve of.

[VFF’15] The Infinite Man Searches for Love, A Review

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

177130-the-infinite-man-0-230-0-341-cropBig budgets are not always needed to make a mixed-genre film successful. When Infinite Man searches for love across time, just what results is hilarious! This movie offers the best in what science fiction can look like using outdated 70’s technology, how romance crafted Aussie-style can become universal and where comedy can go with only three performers carrying the film.

To keep track of which version of Dean (Josh McConville) is whom is not all that difficult because this actor manages to nuance every iteration of himself with subtle differences to show the wisdom gained as he tries to figure out how to escape the mother of all Groundhog Day. Phil Connor never had it that difficult.

Opening night at the 2015 Victoria Film Festival must have had Heaven watching. Audiences treated to a live choir performance before the start of the gala movie, Boychoir, to set the mood. For those who missed this movie, let’s hope there’s a repeat engagement or a wider release being planned.

Newcomer Garrett Wareing is fantastic at playing Stet, a troubled 11-year old with nowhere to go. With a deadbeat mother and a strange father he never met, just what’s revealed is the fact that he has no family or friends. The only thing he has is his angelic voice that this movie describes as “on loan.”

The art of free-falling as an extreme sport can be dangerous. When done right, the euphoria experienced might be like that of experiencing heaven shine upon one’s face like a bright sparkling diamond. Sunshine Superman is an aptly titled documentary about Carl Boenish, the father of BASE jumping. His work in the 70’s and 80’s helped further interest amongst the masses, and the challenges he faced typically meant disobeying the law. Not everyone in enforcement liked the idea of miscreants breaking into buildings or climbing high mountaintops only to leap off it.

Have TARDIS will Travel; Emerald City Comicon Announces Jenna Coleman!

By Ed Sum (The Vintage Tempest)

March 12, 2015 Update: Sadly, her appearance was cancelled. No explanation was offered on the Emerald City Comiccon Facebook page.

Jenna Coleman is more than just the Impossible Girl in BBC’s Doctor Who. She’s the sweetheart of the series with her ability to challenge the Doctor much more than the previous companions in this modern version of the show.

On March 27 and 28th only, she will be gracing Emerald City Comicon to tell about tales beyond the TARDIS and interact with fans. This will be a busy time for this actress, but if she’s anything like her character of Clara Oswald, she will challenge it head on! It’s surprising that she didn’t charm Captain America: The First Avenger but her career was just beginning then. Oh how the times have treated her well!

But Doctor Who fans should take note: John Barrowman will also be gracing the halls of the Washington Convention Center. Whether as Captain Jack Harkness (Torchwood) or Malcom Merlyn (Arrow). this performer will no doubt entertain the masses in hopefully a concert that many fans will wish the organizers of ECC will organize. No plans are set yet, but the clock is ticking near. Excitement is about as Seattle becomes a haven for pop culture at the end of Winter to cure the blues away.

March 20th Update: Sadly, ECCC announced that she is no longer able to attend. The reason looks obvious for those following Coleman’s Twitter feed: she’s doing a script reading for the next episode and that will no doubt go into production very soon. It should be noted that Fan Expo Vancouver has sometimes been able to invite celebs that have cancelled to appear at their show and vice-versa. At least fans from the Pacific Northwest can hope!
