When the danger is real, and Demona has shown that she can’t change her stripes, what happens next can be grounded in what has already been revealed throughout the series and Dynamite Comics‘ Demona miniseries. In part two, I focus on the next two eras.
Also included will be a quick look at her influence with the monthly regular series, as published by this comic book publisher. With the latest freshly out, what’s offered so far is more of a teaser as new characters straight out of legend start wanting a piece of the pie. They are The Green Knight and Queen Mav, Oberon’s mother! Yes, she’s not happy, and that’s for one very good reason!
Demona’s New War
After the massacre at Wyvern, Goliath’s former mate gathers the other gargoyles displaced by this private war and hopes to form a new faction. We see glimpses of this during the series, along with a great deal more in the self-titled miniseries. Although not every century is addressed, there’s more than enough backstory to make her a sympathetic character. Yet after failing with her adopted daughter Angelika, as recounted in the solo series Gargoyles: Demona, the final story featuring the two leaves the aging Angelika’s fate unknown.
Angelika wants to grow old, but her mother can’t accept it. This anticipates the possessive way Demona treats Angela and, eventually, the egg stolen from Brooklyn and Katana (Gargoyles: Quest #5).
Angela’s mother wants a family, but only one shaped by her beliefs.
Her creation of the first Hunter makes that tragedy even worse (“City of Stone”). By attacking the young Gillcomgain, Demona creates an enemy whose descendants pursue gargoyles for centuries. She uses every new attack as proof that humanity can’t be trusted, even when her own violence helped create the threat.
That cycle is why she remains the series’ most important villain. She isn’t merely reacting to history. She keeps making it. Whether this scorned woman is a pawn of something larger than the Archmage’s influence is worth asking. She’s been at the centre of the gargoyle-human conflict since the beginning, and the Weird Sisters rarely act without purpose. Because the Fae are much longer-lived than other species, this leaves room for speculation about life, death and rebirth as themes future stories could explore.
As for destiny, Goliath said it plainly: we must not alter it. The Phoenix Gate is lost to time, and even his encounter with Griff in “M.I.A.” creates a paradox that must happen. The threads can stretch and tangle, but cutting them isn’t easy.
The Future Is Dark for the Gargoyles
Since the first issue of Dynamite’s new monthly Gargoyles series arrived on August 12, 2026, some of what comes next is no longer speculation. The story continues directly from Gargoyles: Quest, with the Manhattan Clan desperately searching for Brooklyn and Katana’s stolen egg. The first two issues are very light in setting up the end game. While various members help in searching for the egg, and going into personal reasons why they are involved, to see ColdStone and Coldfire back is great, but they are not who they were when we last saw them. They are serving the wrong side!
Unless I blinked and missed the explanation, the reason why isn’t fully explained. Apparently they were involved in the stealing of the egg.
And at the same time, the Green Knight awakens and he i sn’t getting the screen time I had hoped. Issue #2 serves as more of a continuing teaser on what’s to come rather than anything else, and as for how Queen Mab will escape her prison, that’s something Oberon fears, and does nothing to stop. While the writing seems sloppy given all the side narratives going on, it seems writer Greg Weisman is hoping readers will hang on while. he sets up the introduction for an additional chapter before diving into what matters in the third or fourth issue.
Is it too soon to return to Avalon? I don’t think so, but it seems without its magic, readers may not care for this format reboot that’s continuing the series. If you’re a fan, then yes, pick up the series and read it as it comes out on this new monthly basis. Although the first two issues do not show Demona fully active, she does achieve a much more visceral victory. Now that she is “sitting on the egg,” waiting for it to hatch, everyone is fearing the worse should this new baby imprint on her rather than Katana. That is why finding the nest before it hatches is important!
For readers who can’t find the older tomics, Gargoyles: Dark Ages, is available now, and Gargoyles: Demona is scheduled for Oct 21, 2026 release. The latter is considered essential before reading this new series, and although it could’ve been timed for release better, they should both be available at your local comic book store to get all caught up!
