Taking Aim at NFTs in Futurama “The One Amigo”

Fans will be pleased Futurama has not lost any of its wit and satire in this latest release. And there’s more crazy stuff still to come on a weekly basis!

These new episodes of Futurama are taking a deeper aim at today’s modern trends and I’m loving it! Not every season tends to be as this nasty, but when compared to the past, I’m glad what’s examined is technically reverent. This series has always been Matt Groening and David X. Cohen‘s way of critiquing what’s wrong with today’s ills, strange digital norms and everything else in between!

“The One Amigo” pokes at what Non-fungible tokens represent. And to make it all about Bender is hilariously perfect! Not only is this episode able to explain what they are to those who don’t understand tech, but also criticise for whether it’s even transferable.

And when this robot lost his identity in the worst way possible, in order for him to re-establish who he is requires visiting his Home on the Range. That is, he returns to the city that “birthed” him (Tijuana, Mexico) and meets his family, gets to learn something new about himself, and even I had a sniffle or two.

Futurama S12E01 The One AmigoBut if I was to jump ahead, all I can say is that when episode five has gold in the title, this chapter literally is just that without giving away anything. Not much can be said about specific episodes because of the agreement made in order to preview the early part of this run.

compressed John DiMaggio and EdIn broad strokes, these episodes pull no punches, and I’m happy to see this series get elevated to a level I don’t recall back when the series was on network television. I’ll post reviews to those episodes I find are tops as they are released, but in the meantime, I was thrilled to meet John Dimaggio again when he was at Emerald City Comic Con; I saw him many years ago and to see him return and sing was a highlight! He didn’t offer any information about this latest when I spoke to him and all he could say is that these are a great batch of episodes and fans should tune in. The cast were pleased with the work they did!

From the official press release, what’s still to come in Futurama includes A.I. friends (and enemies) surfacing to cause Fry, Bender, Leela and crew problems. There are also impossibly cute beanbags and the true 5 million-year-old story behind the consciousness-altering substance known as coffee. And, of course, the next chapter in Fry and Leela’s fateful, time-twisted romance.
