These new episodes of Futurama are taking a deeper aim at today’s modern trends and I’m loving it! Not every season tends to be as this nasty, but when compared to the past, I’m glad what’s examined is technically reverent. This series has always been Matt Groening and David X. Cohen‘s way of critiquing what’s wrong with today’s ills, strange digital norms and everything else in between!
“The One Amigo” pokes at what Non-fungible tokens represent. And to make it all about Bender is hilariously perfect! Not only is this episode able to explain what they are to those who don’t understand tech, but also criticise for whether it’s even transferable.
And when this robot lost his identity in the worst way possible, in order for him to re-establish who he is requires visiting his Home on the Range. That is, he returns to the city that “birthed” him (Tijuana, Mexico) and meets his family, gets to learn something new about himself, and even I had a sniffle or two.
From the official press release, what’s still to come in Futurama includes A.I. friends (and enemies) surfacing to cause Fry, Bender, Leela and crew problems. There are also impossibly cute beanbags and the true 5 million-year-old story behind the consciousness-altering substance known as coffee. And, of course, the next chapter in Fry and Leela’s fateful, time-twisted romance.
