Legend of Korra: Book 4 Trailer Revealed!

Avatar: The Legend of Korra will be seen on Nick.com beginning October 3, and the trailer indicates series creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko are not holding back in deciding the fate of the world. That’s going to be a week away and to see what will happen next looks like this final chapter picks up days after the events from the last season. With the Air Nation swiftly back in full swing, they have a lot more to deal with as the world gets ready for another war. This time, the Earth Nation is the antagonist.

The future is looking grim as Korra embarks on a new quest. She may well be looking to mend the lacerations that has severed her from accessing her past, to speak with the avatars from long ago. The symbolic cutting of her hair indicates that. And in who she finds in her travels certainly makes this coming season perhaps just as equally exciting. Lord Zuko is back and so is another character from this series’ past as the last moments of this trailer indicates:

When Hyper Reality Collides: The Frame to debut this Fall

Fans of mystery and the supernatural should find the trailer for The Frame engaging as they see reality and fiction collide. There’s no real interpretation as to what’s presented in this tease. The montage of shots shows a man running away from something. Juxtapose that with a closeup of an antiquated typewriter, perhaps some people will assume that he’s a writer who crafted a tale that people have read from and found its contents too much to handle. There’s no exact details as to what the plot is. For now the producers are keeping that a secret. With that philosophy, they succeeded at creating a trailer that truly draws viewers into wanting to see the movie when it releases this Fall.

The film stars newcomers David Carranza and Tiffany Mualem and features Christopher Soren Kelly from Ink. Other cast members include: Cal Bartlett, Anthony Nuccio, Jordan Doll, Kent Randell and Shauna Earp.

Jamin and Kiowa Winans

Fans of Jamin Winans work and Double Edge Films will find his new film tantalizing. He crafted the artful sensation, Ink (2009) — a story about souls caught in a light and darkness war set in the world of the Dreamtime — and masterful Spin (aka “God is a DJ”), available on YouTube. Both his early works show a skill in mythic storytelling.

This new film may well follow a similar distribution model as Ink. It was self-distributed through the Internet via torrent sites like PirateBay. Winans and his producer/wife, Kiowa, embraced the piracy, citing the incredible exposure could only help the film. They believe that “Independent films’ largest battle is against obscurity, not piracy.”

Norwescon 38 Dates and Guests Announced!

Norwescon38 With Norwescon 37 only just a recent memory, it didn’t take long for the organizers to announce not only the dates to the upcoming Norwescon 38 but the guests as well. And for those of you who are big readers of high fantasy, you may jump for joy when you read further.

Norwescon 38 will take place next year on April 2nd to the 5th and it will still be held at DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel near the Seattle Airport.

The theme for the convention will be Distant Horizons, Epic Adventures.

[Victoria, BC] The Victoria Film Festival from a Geek’s Perspective

Half of the Otaku no Culture team is definitely getting excited for the Victoria Film Festival, running from Feb 7th to the 16th at various venues, for the huge variety of films offered. On my Friday night wish to hit list is The Congress, a sci-fi product that looks like it blends elements of Cool World, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and The Matrix together. When actress Robin Wright (The Princess Bride) plays herself as a starlet struggling to help her young son, she gives up her rights to be on film for a digitized version. Just what happens is a look into a not too distant future if Hollywood has their say. Il Futuro is a must since it features Rutger Hauer. It’s been a long time since I last saw him on-screen. I remember him best in Blade Runner, so what I’m after to see, based on my geeky interests, are consistent.

I would like to see the gala film, Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa, that night in hopes Colm Meany might be in town. He’s one of those underrated stars that I can truly appreciate and I like to meet him and say I really enjoyed all the work, like Law & Order the The Commitments, he has done outside of the Star Trek universe, but that’s unlikely. When considering this film played in European theatres last year and it’s not a world premiere, the chances for the stars to show up is very slim, but the director might be around.

The Neverending Story Delivers An All-Age Fantasy

J: Whenever The Neverending Story is mentioned, people will most likely remember the film more than Michael Ende’s book that this play is based off. The film is on many lists of the “Top 100 Family Films of All Time.” It comes as no surprise that David S. Craig was under tremendous pressure to adapt Ende’s work for the stage while staying true to the book. Perhaps it was even equal pressure that Kaleidoscope’s Artistic Director, Roderick Glanville, present a show that both fans of Wolfgang Petersen’s film and their children could enjoy.

In this adaptation, Atreyu (Ayden Turpel-Stewart), a young warrior from the plains, is chosen by Fantastica’s ruler, the Childlike Empress (Emily Van Oosten), to take up a quest to save the land and its people from an enveloping black emptiness called The Nothing. Atreyu seeks the aid of many of the land’s inhabitants to stop The Nothing, but the one person who plays the biggest role is Bastian (Stuart Cameron), a boy from a different world who uses his imagination to keep his loneliness at bay.
