* Spoiler Alert

DreamWorks How to Train Your Dragon is at an end and the ride was wonderful. Ever since I saw the first film, I felt this adaptation of Cressida Cowell‘s works was special onto itself. I followed Riders of Berk and Race to the Edge. The former was formulaic (gotta train ’em all mentality) and it simply needed a boost in the world building realm to make it a must-see. Vikings have always been dragon hunters and the citizens of Berk dared to defy convention by caring for these winged creatures. Throughout these trials, Hiccup and Toothless were inseparable.

With the third film now out in theatres, we discover a female dragon of Toothless and she will no doubt drive a wedge between the two; love blossoms and Toothless is hilarious trying to court the lady. Writer-Director Dean DeBlois looked to mating rituals of birds and reptiles to create some Buster Keaton-style comedy gold. The story does not get any much bolder as it follows down a similar path as the second movie. Dragon hunters want to destroy the species and use them as instruments of war than faithful companions.

New episodes of Dragons: Race to the Edge are now available on Netflix and months have passed since Hiccup and the Dragon Riders dealt with Viggo Grimborn. This new antagonist has all the makings to be a classic James Bond style of villain and his patience in how to deal with threats to his trade of selling dragons suggests he will be around for most of the saga. I’m curious if he knows Drago from the films, because one episode suggests he is more aware of what’s out there, beyond the Archipelago.

Very little added exploration is taking place in this new season when a threat is nearby. The crew have to fortify their defenses and plan for the eventuality that either Grimborn or a greater threat will attack. But first, and old adversary, Dagur, emerges out of the woodwork and he’s apparently turned over a new leaf. Hopefully the fate given unto him at the mid-season cliffhanger is not certain. This character has received more development than the others in this series, and I’ve grown to like him.

The six month wait is over. Hiccup and his team have new dangers to face and they are not serpentine in this latest release of Dragons: Race to the Edge episodes. They are a trio of war mongers wanting to own the Dragon Eye, a tube capable of displaying images carved inside (on a crystal) and whoever possesses it can use the secrets it contains to threaten everyone living in the Archipelago. Under Hiccup’s care, it can aid. The narrative slowly moves in an engaging direction to show that this series is not based on a simple idea: to train dragons all the time.
