Whovians should Celebrate! Happy Birthday Sylvester McCoy & Sophie Aldred!

Sylvester McCioyYou got to love time zones because no matter where in the universe the party is happening, Sylvester McCoy, the Seventh Doctor, turns 70.

Happy Birthday Sylvester!

The classic Doctor Who series ended its run in 1989, with hints of McCoy’s version of the title character saying he will live to a ripe old age. After all, The Doctor will become Merlin. For some fans of this actor’s work, he has when he appeared in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey as Radagast the Brown. In Arthurian lore, Merlin has sometimes been depicted as the Wild Man of the Woods. McCoy is certainly living up to everything that is Doctor Who! Older fans like me can see certain connections being made in the work this fine actor has been doing lately.

Sophie Aldred

What’s even cooler is that Sophie Aldred could party it up with her former co-star. She celebrates her birthday on the same day!

Aldred will always be a fan favourite in this author’s universe. To see her beauty, her roles (and the character of Ace evolve) on the telly is fascinating. But her character development did not end there. The Timewyrm and Cat’s Cradle series are amongst my favourite books in the “New Doctor Who Adventures” (Virgin Publishing) to own.

Readers curious in what she has done lately can tune in to Tree Fu Tom, a children’s comedy animated series airing in the UK that’s set in fairy-land. Past works includes Dennis & Gnasher and Noddy in Toyland.

Happy Birthday Sophie! I’m glad to see that you are continuing to be busy, doing what you enjoy the most and that is to entertain children with your beautiful voice!

Davies’ Wizards Vs. Aliens Nominated for Three Bafta Cymru Awards

wizards_vs_aliensThe hit CBBC series Wizard’s Vs. Aliens has been nominated for three Bafta Cymru Awards which is a UK award that recognizes achievement by performers and production staff in Welsh-made films and television programs. WvA has been nominated in Production Design (Arwel Wyn Jones), Costume Design (Ray Homan) and Children’s Programme.

The show was a replacement for The Sarah Jane Adventures after the death of its lead, Elisabeth Sladen, ended the series. Created by Russell T. Davies, who breathed new life into Doctor Who, and lead SJA writer Phil Ford, the series was well received by audiences. A second series is expected to appear in late 2013 with 14 new episodes. WvA sees 16-year-old wizard Tom Clarke (Scott Haran) and his scientist best friend Benjamin “Benny” Sherwood (Percelle Ascott) pair up as they battle the Nekross, an alien race who have invaded earth to devour anything and anyone that contains magic.

Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Round Up!

I’ve still got the memo from [original producer] Verity Lambert outlining what she wanted for the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, so I’ve gone with that …

608So, just what do fans know so far about the coming Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special? On Nov 23, Matt Smith, John Hurt and David Tennant will be the Doctor. Jenna Coleman, Billie Piper, Joanna Page are amongst the first billed, but as for returning cameos from the classic series, BBC is still keeping mum. The likelihood of anyone appearing from the original 1964-1989 run is slim. Well, the exception may well simply lay with Nicholas Briggs.

Doctor Who: Matt Smith Exits. So Who Will Be the Next Doctor?

Somehow, the series has to continue and to smartly have the series look back at the Doctor’s past adventures from a previous regeneration will make sense to keep Doctor Who ongoing.

David Tennant Returns?Spoiler Alert

BBC and The Telegraph have confirmed that Matt Smith is indeed leaving the series, Doctor Who. As for who will replace him, that could either be John Hurt or the return of David Tennant. If the cliffhanger of season seven is any indication, the 50th Anniversary special will no doubt address this particular addition. As for the ramifications, hopefully the series will make a change for the better and explore the psyche of what the Doctor really is.

Is all the ‘good’ that he is doing truly that, or is there some selfishness about him that viewers do not really know? Long time fans will recall that the First Doctor (William Hartnell) did have an air of selfishness and self-centeredness about him. The episode “Name of the Doctor” did come full circle with Hurt mimicking some of Hartnell’s style.
