[Interview] Catching Up With Chad Ferrin. From H.P. Lovecraft’s The Deep Ones to Unspeakable: Beyond the Wall of Sleep, What’s Next?

Beyond the Wall of Sleep is more than a tribute to the works of H.P. Lovecraft. Although it’s meant to be a sequel to another tale, Chad Ferrin massaged what he got into a quirky fun tale about the (coming) end of days.

From a simple film thrown together last minute to becoming a trilogy to honour the works of H.P. Lovecraft, Chad Ferrin doesn’t need that long of a re-introduction. When I spoke to him about his first work, The Deep Ones, (interview link) the ideas for a modern age retelling of several tales have its charm. And he wasted no time in working on a direct sequel for the first.

But for the third, it’s a completely different beast, and I had to chat with him again about how that came to be:

When compared to where you were in the past with making The Deep Ones to now, with Unspeakable: Beyond the Wall of Sleep, where do you think you are as a filmmaker?

Well, it was originally going to be a sequel to my first film, Unspeakable. Roger Garcia initially came to me and said he wanted to do a sequel to that. He said he has an investor who is up for it, and when he didn’t like the draft, I turned it into a H.P. Lovecraft movie because I know that there’s always a demand for that. I intertwined the characters from that first movie into this new one, and it just kind of flowed. Susan Priver helped find another investor, and before we knew it, we began shooting.

H.P. Lovecraft’s The Old Ones is Budget Filmmaking At Its Best (And Worst?)

Just what the creative minds behind H.P. Lovecraft’s The Old Ones want to do is to simply honour what makes up one of this author’s tales.

Chad Ferrin is back with another Crappy World Film’s production! In H.P. Lovecraft’s The Old Ones, it’s man versus monster and from what I hear, he’s working on what may be part three of an ongoing series! I can’t wait to see what he has in store in Unspeakable: Beyond the Wall of Sleep. Hopefully, he’ll have a budget for this one, since to imagine H.P. Lovecraft’s Dreamlands is no easy feat! I’ve read a lot of graphic novel adaptations, and I’ll have high expectations for it!

Ultimately, this film honours everything that defines a crazy fever dream that only H.P. Lovecraft can write. While these films do well to honour his imagination, they aren’t inspired from any particular tale. The latest has a slightly serious tone, and when compared to how important Russel Marsh was in H.P. Lovecraft’s The Deep Ones, he gets centre stage. Apparently, he survived the prior events, was dumped at sea and escaped his prison! He didn’t take kindly to being tortured. And now, he’s out to slaughter some Old Ones Die Hard with a Vengeance style! And what’s put together surprisingly makes sense.

The Deep Ones with Chad Ferrin on H.P. Lovecraft and One Filmmaker’s Vision…

Chad Ferrin‘s The Deep Ones will soon get a limited theatrical release in the United States beginning April 23rd and for fans of H.P. Lovecraft, the themes this film dives into are faithful to the ideas this seminal author conceived long ago. But there are a lot more works which have can be seen in this film.

He grew up watching the classics–namely The Twilight Zone, Hitchcock Presents and The Outer Limits. and some of that style is visible in this b-film. But in order be able to make any film, he had to work hard to get where he’s at. Not only did it mean moving to Los Angeles, but also knowing the right people. Mike Leahy of Phantoms and Pulse fame gave him his break, and when the call came, he was ready! He started work as a production assistant in Back to Back with Michael Rooker and as also a body double.

“I had to have a smile and be wide-eyed every day,” acknowledged Ferrin. His hands on experience in various departments would help him understand how a film comes together, and by the time he was ready to produce his own material and direct, he knew how to manage everything.
