Madoka Rebellion Brings Holiday Cheer for Otaku

A subtitled release of Madoka Magica: The Movie -Rebellion- will open in North America on December 3rd at Grauman’s Eqyptian Theater in Hollywood, California.

Madoka RebellionMadoka Magica: The Movie -Rebellion- will be making a trans-Atlantic trip for its North American run beginning December 6, 2013. Fans will get to see the third and reportedly last film spun from the Japanese animated Puella Magi Madoka Magica series.

The original TV program deals with a world where creatures known as incubators can grant young girls any wish they desire. But these wishes come at a price. To accept the wishes means entering into a contract to use their new-found powers as magical girls — to fight witches and other evil creatures who were born from despair.

These creatures are responsible for many of humanity’s unexplained accidents, suicides and murders.

14-year old Madoka Kaname is one of those girls who enters into a contract with an incubator named Kyubey. But as she soon learns having her wishes granted comes at the cost of her soul. And there is a fine line between those who fight the witches and the witches themselves.

Rebellion will be an all new story written by Gen Urobuchi (2003 visual novel Saya no Uta and 2006 light novel Fate/Zero).

The story Rebellion continues as we see Homura now lives in a universe where witches are no longer born because of Madoka’s rewriting of the universe. But the magical girls continue the fight against new creatures known as wraiths who are created from despair. Madoka doesn’t exist in this world and Sayaka has disappeared after exhausting her magical energy. Homura’s own despair is building, caused by his loneliness. But Madoka and Sayaka mysteriously appear, and it seems what’s behind this is a new magical girl named Nigisa Momoe and a new being fighting against God’s existence.

Kana Asumi is voicing Nigisa, and fans may learn during the film why she is such a mystery character. Nobody quite knows what Nigisa wished for in order to become a magical girl or why she is featured so prominently in the new movie.

Both the cast from the series and the previous two films are making their return for this third installment.

A subtitled release of Madoka Magica: The Movie -Rebellion- will open in North America on December 3rd at Grauman’s Eqyptian Theater in Hollywood, California. Tickets will be made available October 15th. There will be event exclusives and Madoka merchandise will be for sale during the premiere.

This Youtube video is taken from a Japanese TV show and it offers a sneak peek at the new movie. As a bonus, Madoka voice actress Aoi Yuuki appears in this program as a special guest.
