With three powerhouse martial arts stars Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, and Tiger Chen to kick some serious butt, Triple Threat is an apt title for this action thriller. I almost want to call them the Asian version of The A-team–but the beloved TV show saw these soldiers for hire out to do good than be hell-bent. The roles these boys have are ambiguous. One is out for revenge and the others are seemingly okay with following him.

This movie is not for kids but for the 80s martial art film enthusiast, it’s an homage to those products from long ago with a touch of Michael Bay style direction mixed in.

Donnie Yen is Big Brother!

Donnie Yen is more than an action hero, he’s a role model more than ever not only to his fans but also to those he’s trying to inspire in Big Brother (大師兄). He plays Henry Chen, a well-meaning ex-soldier turned teacher who believes in second chances. He shows life is not necessarily over to those kids who feel like they have been cast aside. The class he is assigned to handle are all considered delinquents and the problems they have are not necessarily their fault.

While viewers do not understand why Chen is trying to play hero, the story unfolds quickly enough to elevate this character to a superstar. Not even the kids he’s supposed to teach get it. Alice Cooper can sing the praises of school’s out forever, but a lingering question should be asked: what kind of impact does middle school make to anyone who is unsure in what to do next after graduation?

Ancient Korea is Rampant with Zombies!

Rampant Rampant is now out on home video by Well GO USA Entertainment and it shows how Ancient Korea has a problem. Night Demons are everywhere, and there’s a plot to overthrow the Young dynasty (Josen period, 1392–1897). To say which is worse, fans of Asian horror will have to see.

The bonus materials are light. It consists of a making-of and behind the scenes piece, discussing production elements. With this work, attention is more with the story! The set design is spot on to bring this feudal period to life.

When these creatures hold the country in the palm of their hands and the empire is falling apart, just who will reign supreme kept me glued. Curiously, these monsters exhibit vampire-like behaviour too. Ultimately, it’s a martial arts and zombie genre mashup which is rarely done. Korean made Train to Bosun is tough to beat. This film is set in a different time period where no real comparisons can be made narrative-wise. Both are beautiful cinematically, and the terrors….

Can Fate be Changed with Iceman 2: Time Traveller?

Following up on the events of the last film, The Iceman 2: The Time Traveller (冰封侠: 时空行者) proves He-Ying is a tough nut to crack. His loyalty is never questioned, but yet his brothers-in-arms are easily corruptible. This Chinese production is coming to North America courtesy of Well Go USA Entertainment with a video release on Feb 19th, 2019.

This film originally released in November 2018 to lacklustre box office results. When a lot of action-adventure Asian films are out to create that blockbuster experience ala Marvel Entertainment, director Raymond Yip tries his best and gives audiences Quantum Leap instead of Doctor Who. The lead is played by Hong Kong action star Donnie Yen (甄子丹).
