Anyone who’s been following the LEGO Star Wars brand will be thrilled for chapter two, Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past due out soon! While it may not carry the same heartfelt and canonical style weight as The Freemaker Adventures, this new four-part special looks set to deliver a chaotic ride through the galaxy and remake everything all over again! I just want to see it because of Lando and that cliffhanger from last year! (review link)
I had to get these early thoughts out before its debut because the trailer makes this continuation look like a blast. But is the expansion teased in the trailer wrong? If remixing canon in the wildest ways is the goal, then that’s a resounding hell yes.
The special brings back Sig Greebling, an unassuming nerf-herder whose curiosity tends to get the better of him. In the first instalment, he stumbled across an ancient Jedi artifact known as the Cornerstone, which gave him the power to rewrite galactic history. Willingly or not, Sig uses it to change allegiances and unravel the familiar saga at large—and I can’t help but wonder if that chaos might even spill into another brick-built realm. Could the mysterious Rift open a doorway to Ninjago?
In this upside-down version of Star Wars, Sig must team up with his former ally-turned-Sith sibling Darth Dev, the ever-clueless Jedi Bob, the confident Yesi Scala, and mechanical mischief-maker Servo. Their mission: to stop Solitus, a new villain voiced by Dan Stevens, and somehow set the galaxy back on course.
Of course, it won’t be as easy as snapping two bricks together. To succeed, this unlikely team must master both “Force Building” and “Sith Breaking”—two powers that are bound to clash in spectacular fashion.
I admit to some trepidation. The trailer gives off strong LEGO Movie energy, which could be intentional. Although I did not feel this movie was perfect, that’s because of the marketing to get people to buy the product. Maybe that’s the point: to go as meta and tell fans there are build sets. Only time will tell if my fan theory pans out—that Star Wars may soon collide with other licensed LEGO universes.
