Saving the best bits of lore for the finale is perhaps why I liked Venom The Last Dance over the other two films. Although this alien ooze’s personality is not changed since the start, where he’s basically a bombastic young kid, I’m amazed at how well Tom Hardy can pull double duty and bring that out even more. This character was originally voiced by Brad Venable and to still see him get partial credit is great. And to watch how this actor can balance between performing against himself is a clear demonstration of his versitile talent.
And at long last, the secrets of the ooze (the alien symbiote) are revealed! Knull is some dark god who said that he created them, but when they saw “The Light,” they rebelled and exiled their creator. It’s a fantastic start to a mythology and when he’s produced another race, the Xenophage, to exact revenge (they’re his new heralds), all I can say it’s about time this film is diving deep into the comic book lore!
Although this movie missed a chance to join with the Marvel Cinematic Universe proper when the symbiote left a bit of itself behind, I hoped the next film would fix things. Instead, it’s all about Rex Strickland (Chiwetel Ejiofor) wanting to catch the last symbiote. His division has plans to create super soldiers. And when the possibilities include a horse and a female bonding with the other members of the Klyntar (Symbiote) race, to not go further with it feels like a disservice.
With all the cards laid out, the Venomverse is a world I’m finally interested in. Maybe the grande plan is to wrap up everything that is Eddie, who finally arrives in New York. Whether he gets that job to finally encounter Parker remains in question. But as the post credits scenes set up something else, I’m glad this story is really not over. Maybe the plan is to set up how the symbiotes are a force for good before focusing on the one piece that knows the multiverse and bonds with Peter Parker!
Maybe that’s the idea for the next Spider-Man movie so fans can see the version with the white spider logo emblazoned on his chest! When there’s no official information about the future other than it’ll begin production in 2025, I am offering my best guess as I doubt all the symbiotes got returned to whence they came.
